Tall enough for a gaff rig. But I think you need to do something about that working platform cross piece before it breaks and sends your tools through the cabin roof or onto someone below.
👍👌👏 2) Glad to hear that the thing you sit on on top of the mast isn't structural. 😱🙈 Best regards, luck and especially health to all involved people and dogs.
I was wondering about that spreader. I’m glad you took note of it and put in your mental “to do” list. “Let’s get cracking “, I thought that to be a southern states (US) colloquialism, but usurped by us northern states for use. That Purple Heart never ceases to amaze me; it is a magnificent wood!
The expression is ubiquitous in English speaking countries, I've read that it began with British troops during WWII using horse-drawn gun carriages, referencing the cracking of whips. If that's true, the usage likely spread to the US, and elsewhere with returning troops.
3:12 .... "it's not structural" but it's ok to stand and sit on it while you lift object and work with tools ! Put it on your list of things to replace ! .... pronto.
you should have odd life crafting on your show soon. Duca and Roberta are one of the main reasons you were able to refit this boat so many years ago. keep up the great work! Merry Christmas
Wonderful job with your masts. I have one tip. I’m concerned about the zip ties you used to secure the electrical cable to the mast. Generally zip ties will deteriorate very quickly in direct sunlight so I hope you have a longer term plan to secure the cable. Perhaps running the cable in a conduit secured to the mast with metal bands?
There may well be an issue with chaffing too. The movement of the master will eventually cause the harder cable ties to cut through the softer cable. The suggestion of a conduit is a great idea.
I'm super excited to have found your channel! Real People on a real boat! Not overly produced and edited, just good ole content. I'll never have a boat like yours, but at least I can relate to you as people. ❤ Keep doing what you do! And....let me know if you want some helper aboard...lol
When you measure the hieght of the mast remember to add the distance of the deck above the water. Abridge does care how tall the mast is. A bridge only care how high above the water the top is. Most bridges have a published hieght above mean high water and a scale on the side of the bridge that you add or subtract from that hieght if there is any kind of tide.
MP is a champ to work on getting all these episodes out as well as keeping Ben on track. Love Love LOVE the Yaba christmas advent calendar! Thank you both for all your hard work.
Include fire extinguishers especially in engine room (remotely discharged), lighting rod, check to make sure the clear plastic tubing routing diesel to engine is unaffected by the diesel, make boat shipshaped. How do you wash your clothes?
I thought long and hard before responding to this. I am almost 100% certain the motivation and intent was positive but I also have female friends explaining their perspective and seeking male allies. In a world where women are judged too much, too often and too harshly on their appearance and in a world where a small but unfortunately persistent minority insist that women accept their attention, intrusion and attitude or face criticism maybe we should be rethinking mention of appearance. It is indeed sad times where a compliment can cause problems but as Gandalf said these are times we are given. I am sure we follow Ben and MP because we like them and their story. They are lovely people but that is because of who they are not how they look. I know this post may raise its own issues and I hope whoever posted the comment is not offended. It isn't meant as criticism of that post but just something to give us a reason to look at the wider picture and the effect not of a single post but of the accumulation of such comments across all social media. I don't have first hand understanding but I do know people for whom body image is a major issue. We don't know how other people feel about their appearance so until times are more comfortable not just for women but across social media generally maybe we just don't go there? It's just a thought.
To go up and down the mast i recommend you consider using the " JUMAR" " blocker" and the "DRESLER" handel...we use to climb vertical shafts in speleology...it is more easy that the technique you are using...one person can climb the rope alone
Usually the best measurement to give an impression about the size of the boat is the length on deck. The bow sprit is a spar so in theory you can remove it. For example Flying Coney has a length on deck of 79ft or 24 meters but for sailing we will add a bow sprit and reach 105ft or 32 meters. But 27 meters length over spars is still impressive.
Just a quick amazing. I was so worried about you'll at the start of the project. I am very impressed with your persistence and hard work. This is a great boat. Great travels.
So fun, getting to watch the daily progress instead of every Sunday! Feels like real time! Thanks guys! By Christmas, you will def need a week or two off diving somewhere???
You and M.P. have to be some of the happiest people to work on a boat I have ever seen. One quick word of lightning advice from someone who in on strike 3, many times the energy comes in thru the grounding system and into the network and takes out every network device, so now I have a disconnect on The positive and the negative supply cables and I disconnect the nmea2000 and the proprietary mfg. network cables at the hub or device. A lot of work but nothing near as invasive as intalling all new electronics.
In a schooner like Yaba sort of is, the proportion between main mast height and boat length should be like 1.25 for normal sailing performance. Of course that’s just rule of thumb. Yaba’s ratio mast/length is probably less than 0.6 judging by eyeballing the images. It is not a sailing boat, sails are an afterthought, auxiliary for the engine. A motorboat with sails.
I am extremely happy to see your smiling faces every day and I can feel the algorithm starting to move in your favor! 🙂 102K and counting...... 200K soon!!!!!!!
I love these "days before Christmas" episodes! Easy to watch and so entertaining. I know you know this now. I have learned the hard way with my building projects. If you are fortunate enough have a fine lady as your partner, always do the bathroom first! 😅😊💛
Wow 89 feet in length but she looks it, masts looks not more than 35 feet, way too short if she is to become a full fledged sail boat. But I love all the conveniences … it’s just like a house. I would be happy for you all when you’re finish with the remaining works to complete Yaba. Try and don’t add weighty designs and details because she looks pretty heavy which will definitely slow her down. Be safe and best wishes y’all.
Merci!!!!!! thank you!!It is always a real pleasure to spend time with you, and I’m happy if I can give back to you even a little. It truly brings me joy to contribute, in some small way, to the building of your dream.
It’s a secret pleasure to watch Ben creatively building the projects of Yaba. Watching him working with such lovely and for an ( me ) , exotic wood 🪵. Those planks of Purple Heart 💜 are worth their weight in silver here in the USA 🇺🇸
That thought came to mind yesterday. Why didn't you measure it coming down. Anyway, got what was honestly needed for the future bridge height. Cool new shower going in. Another wonderful video from Ben & Mp on Yaba'. Subscribe Happy Holidays. Dennis USA 🇺🇸 N.C.
🤣 Yes next time let them work for breakfast. Ben be sure to stay on MP good side easy to let the line slip ;-).. Though I don't think you have to worry with the Love that shine in her eyes for you.
WOW! After all of these years of watching the channel, i was really surprised at the actual measurements. I really thought that the mast heights would have been taller -- the inter-coastal waterway along the USA east coast has a clearance of 64ft for through travel -- i always assumed that Yaba would have had masts much closer to that height, considering how long Yaba appeared to be on the videos, but i was wrong about that too! I would never have thought that Yaba was over 88 feet long -- I always figured that it was maybe 55 - 60 feet long (the bowsprit has always been difficult to estimate). I'm just floored by the measurements -- it's nothing like what i had guessed ... now i really can't wait to see the full interior tour once she is all finished! One thing that you forgot to measure was the beam ... at 88 feet long I'm guessing that the beam must be close to 15 feet based on what I've seen on the videos!!! I love the fact that you guys aren't afraid to do daily videos like this -- that's why I will always be watching!!!
We were also quite shocked at how long she is! 88! My gosh! Her beam is 19ft, also wider than you thought! Everyone that came to see the boat in person after watching the videos said that she is way bigger in real life. So you were not that wrong with your guesses, the screen makes it tricky! Anyway, we are loving sharing these daily adventures with you! We are so glad you are enjoying the videos!

The "not structual" spreader is used by you a lot to sit and stand on, so i am always scared that at some point it will collapse while you try to stand or sit on it. Be more carefull.

The excitement builds to complete the pre Christmas tasks.
Masts seem too short for a large heavy boat like Yaba. That could mean sails are small to push all that displacement. You'll need to use the engine.
The boat is actually big enough for a three mast setup.
More of a coastal motor cruiser than a yacht.
In a schooner like Yaba sort of is, the proportion between main mast height and boat length should be like 1.25 for normal sailing performance. Of course that’s just rule of thumb.
