Shot one at the schoolhouse on Pendleton around 2006. One I shot didn’t have the badger detach bottom metal though. Wasn’t that special of a rifle… The shorter barrel and sf can was cool … even when it came out it was super over hyped and priced
Confirmed no detached bottom metal on ours either agreed not the greatest rifle by no means but better than what we had at the time for the mission set
Iron Brigade Amory was operated by Lt. Col. Chandler (ret) here in Jacksonville NC. A good man who knew precision rifle making. Back in 94 he modded my Rem 700 PSS into a tack driver. Not sure if he is still alive but he has extensive knowledge in precision rifles. Great vid guys.
Norm was a great guy, but I especially learned alot on barrel dynamics from Jr. Tiny sure knew how to work a Remington action. Bonus points if you know the color of nail polish he used to set the trigger screw. Learned alot in that shed. Only complaint was the NF scope and the thin Aluminum clutch that came in the turrets and having to torque to specs for zero stop. Not the best scope design for Jarheads, but the old girl could sling lead. Great cold bore predictability and loved shooting it supressed.
@normanchandler3917 Sorry for his and your loss. It was always good to sit and listen to some of the history he was a part of. I worked for Wilmington PD back then. I joined the Highway Patrol in 2000. I still have that old Rem 700, too. I wish him well.
I fired one of the detachable magazine prototypes at the final P1 class held by Lt. Col Chandler at Blackwater back in Sept of 06. It had Nightforce glass on top with an AN/PVS-22 out front, and a Surefire Can at the muzzle. My ammo, (Black Hills 175gr Sierra Match King loads) had a muzzle report like a .22lr. I shot steel at 400m in total darkness on the KD range that night, hit all shots fired. The rounds hitting the steel were louder than the report from the rounds. Some time later I was at IBA with a friend dropping off a rifle for upgrade work and Lt. Col Chandler walked by with one of the late versions of the XM-3 which had some changes: hinged mag floor-plate and more Titanium parts (including the forward rail for the UNS mounting). These were damn cool rifles! Just glad I got to fire one.
Can't thank you guys enough for doing these type of historical pieces, with great guests. This as well as so many others was absolutely awesome!! Keep up the good work and keep bringing up history like this. Learning is one of my favorite things, especially historical military projects. Oh man, Iron Brigade Armory. That brings back a ton of memories. My dad worked for the Chandlers with IBA and the Bushmaster custom division back in the mid 00's. I spent a lot of time in and around that shop. Lots of fond memories and I may have my own IBA rifle. Or two. 😁
I meet Col Chandler in his living room when my MSgt was buying M14 mag from him during the high cap ban. The Col was also the OIC of the Marine Corps Sniper school when he was on active duty. Great guy.
Man that bring up memories when Chandlers custom M40's where the bee's knees in precision rifle back in the late 1990's. Wish I got one when they were only 2k back in the day.
Steve Reichert is a great guy to talk to about these rifles. He had a lot to do with both the design and getting them into CMP. He's got one of the 3 original rifles with the side folding stock.
I remember seeing that side folder and the rotating indexed stock in the shop when they were playing with that design. Really cool concepts for the time.
This was my fav. I had an a1-3 for a little bit but never did the build and it got traded for something or another. I need to revisit this build myself
Great video on a sweet rifle that I hadn’t heard prior to this. The GWOT produced at least half a dozen efforts to improve the existing rifles like the M24, M40, M107, etc, and produced guns like the MK 12, SCAR-H/ Mk 20, Mk 15, MK 22, Rem PSR, and so many others that’s it’s impossible to keep track of what’s out there. Add to this the long list of international offerings. Why they didn’t call this the M40A7 or whatever is beyond me..would have helped the funding issue for the existing program of record. Marine Corps should have known they were too small to generate their own programs without joint support.
While in 2023 he XM3 isn’t anything special, it was really the rifle that changed the thought that sniper rifles need to always have 20”+ barreled rifles, fortunately the Marine Corps figured it out, sadly on the army side they never quite grasped it. When I retired this year the .308s were all 20” on the sniper side unless a section took one of the SDM’s M110A1 DMRs, but I guess that’s better than the 24” barrels we were using back in the M24 days when I first got to the section. It’s definitely an amazing piece of history. It’s also to my knowledge the rifle that got the military to understand that all of the precision guns really need to be suppressed.
The various comments here are amazing. Mostly good, some medium and a few terds in the punchbowl. As usual. I appreciate the efforts of Col Otto Weigl, my Father Lt Col NA Chandler and the retired US Marines that work(ed) @ IBA and made this program happen. The feedback from the fleet was amazing and the young men that went to combat, not even old enough to legally drink a beer, had a weapon they could hunt with. There is no negative here. It was a win for the US.
Honestly love the dog he's speaking his own language to everyone. Just interesting to observe but all the information I enjoyed greatly and all the history was a great touch. I learned a good deal I didn't know about that system .
I got to see one of these as 2111armorer in 3rd echelon armory (IWR)Camp Pendleton CA, 2007 they also had a mp7 we worked on. The training they were using it for was urban sniper course, seeing whether they liked it or not.
