  • The SVD / Dragunov video took us a long time to complete. The Dragunov is perhaps the most recognizable sniper / dmr out there. I hope you enjoy this video and we do a dive on the SVD and see if we are Soviet Sniper material.

    Well I'm quite pleased with you pointing out that in spite of it literally being named a sniper rifle (Snáyperskaya Vintóvka sistém'y Dragunóva, which translates to Sniper Rifle sytem Dragonuv) it is and always was intended as a DMR.

    • @hyperturbotechnomike
      @hyperturbotechnomike ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Same goes with the VSK-94, it's a scoped SMG type weapon, which is just a DMR for urban units

    • @andreivaldez2929
      @andreivaldez2929 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      I think that's just a misunderstanding of the Soviet sniper doctrine compared to other countries' sniper doctrine. Soviets wanted a mobile sniper who would move with their squad or platoon and provide longer range fire from a reasonably close distance (just outside the enemy's ability to engage them with regular infantry weapons); while other countries wanted snipers who stayed far away and picked off high value targets, performed reconnaissance, or called in fire missions.

    • @elburropeligroso4689
      @elburropeligroso4689 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      The DMR concept is to take a service rifle from the rack, accurize it, and have it use the same ammo as used in the general infantry unit.
      The closest thing in the Soviet sphere of influence analogous to a Western DMR would be the Iraqi Tabuk rifle.
      Taking an M110 and handing it to the best shot in an infantry platoon doesn't mean it is no longer a sniper rifle; it is still a sniper rifle just pressed into the designated marksman role. The same holds up for the SVD.
      Also, doctrine for snipers is different for East and West, so using the Western doctrine to classify it is also erroneous. According to Russian doctrine and usage, it is a sniper rifle.
      If going by Western doctrine for a DMR, an accurized AK-74 with an RPK-74 barrel would be a true designated marksman rifle.

Most of the shooting that soldiers did in Afghanistan was over 500m. Mountain to mountain. SVD was used mostly by DShB (Air Troopers) unites and they were called the Caravan Hunters.

    Man, army flasbacks comes from this video. Given service in army and having the Dragunov (svd) as your service weapon is one of the coolest thing I remember. Sadly this one didn't have the original pso-1 sight. Absolute blast to shoot over 500 yards, downside are thought that gun kicks like a bitch (has sharp kick unlike sniper rifles) hence the 7.62x54r and mechanism. At the end of the day, first timers had eyebrows in blood :D. Yea about the mags, since the 7.62x54r (same as PKM) casings have lip at the end, you had to make sure to pack the ammo right way or doublefeed would happen. Also the sling would be wrapped on to your left arm and pull it toward yourself if you ever would need to shoot that gun while upright.

    About the ammo; they *DO* make purpose built ammunition for snipers, the 7N1 round, and with handloads you can easily close up those groups. Prvi and Lapua make brass, though the Lapua brass is necked for .308 bullets, not the .312 of the soviet rifles. Personally, never had much luck with S&B for accuracy, both 54R or 6.5 Creedmoor. The original SVD-63 rifle had a twist rate tuned specifically for this ammo, but with later models it was changed so the SVD could make use of general purpose and machinegun ammunition, and a revised 7N14 round was designed for the new rifles.
    On the optic, the chevrons are actually ranged for drop beyond 1000m, in 100m increments after setting the elevation turret to its maximum distance setting. that said this feature isn't the most useful for most shooters, and would have been better served with a practical drop setting. Essentially they treat it like the classic single-post style optics, like the PU.

    Never forget the concept of operations for this weapon was creating US casualties. As a DMR in the hands of average infantry, it was extremely effective. It does not stack up to modern sniper rifles but is robust enough to be thrown into the back of an APC and still work. It gives the squad a longer reach than AKs, something we didn't figure out until the 90s.

    • @Front-Toward-Enemy
      @Front-Toward-Enemy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Well we had DMR rifles well before the 1990s. We had plenty of guys in Vietnam armed with xm21 sniper rifles and we had guys in Korea armed with m1c and m1d garands. All doing the same job as what a Russian armed with an SVD would be doing.
      The reason it took us so long to adopt a purpose built SVD isn’t because we “couldn’t figure it out”, it’s because we didn’t need to. A xm21/M21/M25 with match ammo will be more accurate than an SVD.

    • @jed6rar
      @jed6rar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@Front-Toward-Enemy the xm21 was available but it would not be doing what the SVD would. xm21 were as far as i have read mainly used by snipers or specialist roles outside of a squad. which makes sense because Nam. in Korea again available but were never widely used.

      @thegenericguy8309 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It also explains why the Soviets wanted the full 24 inch barrel even if it meant the barrel was a worse and thinner one. One of the goals here was to provide squads with a weapon that could get as much energy as possible out of Soviet-era steel cored AP cartridges in order to give them the capacity to deal with the most modern NATO body armor. In other words, the same problem that made NATO develop the P90, but with the exact opposite solution

    • @Front-Toward-Enemy
      @Front-Toward-Enemy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jed6rar the xm21 was used by snipers yeah… and so was the svd. As far as im concerned, the xm21 was doing the same job, just not at the squad level. But in the 1960s we didn’t need a squad level DMR because the m14 was still being widely used by troops outside of Vietnam. In Vietnam the role of a Designated Marksman was deemed unnecessary.
      And the m1c and m1d was available and therefore proves my point. We had the idea before the commies did.
