Props to the stunt drivers filming this segment for a TV show about a real life event and years later gave us the perfect template for an Initial D parody.
That was the most brilliant thing I've seen someone do with a bus, wedging it under the other one to keep it from rolling. Sheer genius. Good thing it was firemen in there too, if it'd been kids a lot of people would've been mad at him over everything he did to try and help, forgetting that buses are designed to take a hit.
It's been 28 years since this happened. Thank goodness no one was killed. Ernie and Peter did a really heroic thing and a great job too. I have a feeling they're both retired from bus driving.
You can tell this is old, technology has improved, most vehicles now have feature were the air get to certain psi and all the brakes will lock-up, and most vehicles this size has more then one tank.
Wow. How terrifying. I drove bus. You are completely responsible for the lives on your bus. Even though the trouble wasn't he's fault, if he'd crashed, and survived, he wouldn't have felt responsible for any deaths or injuries. I'm so glad he had such an intelligent and caring friend who saved his life, along with all those fire fighters.
HOLY SHIT!!! Same thing happened to my school bus in 5th grade to a field trip, the bus lost air pressure so it had no brakes, so the bus driver just drove into the gravel and it stopped.
Jeremy Boateng Yeah, was scary, but thankfully the bus driver knew what he was doing and stopped the bus safely by rolling it into some gravel and bushes.
I used to watch this show when it first came out on broadcast TV. I never realized how elaborate the reenactments were. And the acting was even good, not the cardboard soap opera acting, and overbearing narrative you see with a lot of other shows of this kind. Quality show.
They're all from Episode 411. Each Rescue 911 episode had three to five stories. Episode 411 had four stories: 1. "Three Men and a Little Girl" 2. "Brakeless Bus 3. "CO-Poisoned Family" 4. "911 Santa Delivery"
That's amazing! The first time I saw this I thought it was a bad idea to use school buses for this, they just don't seem right for this kind of thing. I love how he's singing 'runaway bus" at the end
Those guys did a good job, here is an old bus driving song that we would sing after a trip.. Thank you Mr Bus driver thanks for the ride. Going this way and that way, and sometimes the wrong way, thank you Mr. Bus diver thanks for the ride! Three cheers for these brave guys!
I love this segment cause Pete sings "Runaway Bus" at the end!! This segment reminds me of the one where the trucker loses his brakes, and his friend has to help stop his truck!!
That was awsome driving by both of the bus drivers. Awesome done at the end where he push him out and use his bus to support the other bus for not tipping over! They should get a medal!!!!
when the bus pulled onto the side of the road, it was VERY smart to get up right beside him, if he didn't, the bus on the side of the road would've tipped and toppled, and they would've died because of blows to the head. no seat belt on those things.
Happened again in San Andreas the Friday before fall break. A school bus lost its brakes on the Elmore expressway. It crushed ten cars and hit several more.
Good thing that on semi-trucks and busses if you're losing too much air pressure (under 40-60 PSI in the air tanks) the parking brakes applies automaticly, progressively as the air gets to zero and wont get off until you get at least 60 PSI in the tanks.
Amazing. Like the Wizard of Oz/Dark Side of the Moon thing. Everything syncs up almost perfectly, and as soon as they cut to the old fart playing guitar, the 90s song ends. My favorite part is after the bus stops and he's still holding the wheel. The music seems to really work with that moment lol
It looks like they tilted the camera to make the road look steeper. They probably filmed the jump on a flat road with no cliff to the side, and they probably did it slow and then sped up the film to make it look faster. I'm also guessing there was no one except the stunt drivers in the buses when they filmed them from the outside.
When you loose all your air the brakes should lock. Also, anyone that has ever driven down hill, you don't take it out of gear. Props the the first driver hellova job.
Nimbly if a bus is going downhill at TopSpeed The gears will grind against one another and the brakes won’t lock up that could explain why there was smoke coming from the bus the brakes were trying to stop it but because they were going down hill The momentum of gravity was pushing it down heal faster than the brakes could stop it There’s also the case that the brakes that were made back in the time that this happened we’re probably not as advanced as the ones we have today the film was made in 1992 so there is no telling how outdated those buses were
Those buses are from model year 1979-80 International but when they showed the speedometer and the brake PSI indicator, they showed the dash console of an International Loadstar 1700, which is the S1700s predecessor model and the S1700s had a different dash console
Look how the other school bus driver uses his bus to pull alongside the other one with failed brakes by pushing it to the bank and that did the trick and that stopped the bus
Those international vehicles had air over oil brakes which were very poor at best. I've known serious accidents caused by them failing. One on a hill killing 2 people. You still see some of these old vehicles on the road today. I'll never travel in one again and I avoid them if I can.
I'd like to know how at the top of the mountain the buses were one Chevy and one International, but at the time they came to a stop they were both International
Its a little hard to explai, but shifting a big truck or bus is a lot different than shifting in a car with a synchronized clutch. Yes, at 45mph you could normally pop it into 10th gear, but if you're going down a mountain with no brakes and building speed, there's no way you would be able to catch the gear in time. Maybe another trucker can explain it a little better than me.
this one is also interesting because in the begining commentary by shatner he stands beside a schoolbus instead of the usual Firetruck, ambulance,policecar,helicopter..
I agree they did the right thing, since they would never have made it down the hill, even if they didn't meet anyone. I was just shocked at the way they stopped it!!!
Maybe, but I think it's more related to these two: Episode 323: Collapsed School Bus Driver th-cam.com/video/czl3tzZS1I0/w-d-xo.html Episode 714: Runaway School Bus th-cam.com/video/vSW6-Ci2e9A/w-d-xo.html
Ok how come nobody on that bus is screaming?? I would been screaming to death and having a panic attack if the bus didn't stop and going in fast speed.
They were very lucky it would have been very bad situation I wonder how is ernie and Peter are doing in 2022 even though this from 1992 still wandering how are they doing
Omg when I watch try not to laugh I see the magic school bus and the kid says oh no this is gonna be another crazy field trip and then the clip when he drives on that hill comes up lol

Oh come on

I can tell it was old because of the dated recording
Only in the Obese States of America of course. Please keep that in mind.

shut off the motor and drop the clutch
Andy Elkins The school bus was an automatic.
Quality Tofu Delivery oh but that guy said he was trying to down shift and he couldn't but thanks
Dang Son!
Jeremy Boateng Yeah, was scary, but thankfully the bus driver knew what he was doing and stopped the bus safely by rolling it into some gravel and bushes.
Same happened in San Andreas. A bus lost its brakes on the downhill side of Mt Chiliad.
This one made me cry, bless his heart.
Amen

+2fast4all There is one.
i came here becouse of an Initia D mix video hehehehe
There already is one
there already is
2fast4all it happened
The newer buses and big rigs nowadays the parking brake pops on when the air pressure drops below 60 PSI
indirect action airbrakes.. you need air pressure to release the brakes. That is the standard nowadays.
Not at 60, more like about 45
@@victormacarthur6029 No its 30 I just got my cdl. At 65 you alarm sounds that your low on air.

OMG thats so scary. Glad to hear nobody got hurt.
Lets just say you are a hella good driver. Both of you. I am glad y'all are all ok.
Happened again in San Andreas the Friday before fall break. A school bus lost its brakes on the Elmore expressway. It crushed ten cars and hit several more.
Several people went to hospitals on that Friday.
Am i the only one who has the song at the end come in their head randomly every couple years , for the last 30 years?
No, it's actually integrated into my tourette's. I sing it quarterly
Those things sure are tough. Do that with a car and its a crumpled piece of metal. These things had hardly a scratch.
Steinway Husky Yeah. I wouldn't be surprised if they continued to use this bus.
One bus was a Chevy at the top of the hill, buy the bottom they're both Internationals. They must have been going really fast.
Good thing that on semi-trucks and busses if you're losing too much air pressure (under 40-60 PSI in the air tanks) the parking brakes applies automaticly, progressively as the air gets to zero and wont get off until you get at least 60 PSI in the tanks.
there is no progressive application, once it's below 60, its activated 100%
That was amazing. Very good thinking.
remind me of that initial d episode where keisuke save shinigami with brake
with another guy in 350z
Ryosuke, not keisuke bro :D
it was ryosuke

ha! my dad lost his brakes goin down a 9% grade, his jake helped him a LOT!
The bus lost its breaks from Debris hitting the air tanks.
Whew, that scared me!

I've seen the memes, but never the actually story. Geez, goodness, that was... close, to put it plainly. The right words aren't coming to mind.
That was one hell of a way to stop a bus.
Wow, almost like a real life "Speed"
On the Thursday before fall break, a bus lost its brakes in Westover Islands.
Pay closer attention, there are 2 buses in the beginning. One's a Chevy and one's and Int'l.
i was to quick with my comment, they did get an award. They deserved it!!!!
I love this story!

Episode 714: Runaway School Bus

Oh! THAT episode! The truckers worked together extremely well together.
Wow the last bit was a great enactment
That's actually Ernie, the dude who had lost his breaks on his bus, singing Runaway bus.
Almost 30 years ago glad all were safe
Nice moves of the chauffeurs. They should make a Hollywood movie about a bus that can't slow down.
Ok how come nobody on that bus is screaming?? I would been screaming to death and having a panic attack if the bus didn't stop and going in fast speed.
They all bunch of firefighters. Got the biggest balls on all public service.
thats why they should equip buses with jake brakes!
dant387 School buses are now being equipped with them. I love them!

@Streetcar1743 How do you set the air pressure? Are there valves you can adjust? Or is it done at the factory?
whats the episode at the end?

#220 runaway truck has shatner behind big rigs and this one he's in front of a schoolbus, an interesting episode opener.
