Too many shows today depict emergency officials as complete and utter fools, and that is absolutely insulting! These are the very people who risk their lives every day for the people in their community.

    This was filmed in Dodge, WI, on the Green Bay & Western Railroad.
    GB&W 313 is an Alco C424, now at work - along with several GBW Alcos - on MNNR in the Twin Cities.

    • @ThePhoneGenius2009
      @ThePhoneGenius2009 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Pete Kranz From what I can tell and based on the knowledge of my uncle that lives in WI and lived .2 miles away from where this was filmed, this is what happened. The actual train you refer to (ALCO C424, GBW313) was involved in the accident, however, this was a repainted Alco to look like this train for the reinactment.

    • @pkranz937
      @pkranz937 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. The accident happened in Onalaska, WI, near La Crosse WI, about 1 mile from where I lived at the time. They re-enacted the incident in Dodge, WI, on the GB&W railroad. Dodge is a hamlet of about 50 people. Onalaska had about 10,000 at the time, but the railroad in question was the double track Burlington Northern, which I also worked for.
      Hope that helps.

      I did watch the clip, saw your comment and remembered what I was told. I could have misunderstood, but from what I heard, is the train in the video reenactment (not so much the location) is not the actual train involved. It has the same identifiers as the train because the production crew wanted it to be as realistic as possible. I could be wrong, but that's all I know to tell you. I'm not BSing at all.

    It's been 28 years since this happened. Ron decided to catch the burglar who broke in fast. Suddenly a train was approaching. When I saw the train hit the car, I was like "Oh my gosh!" It scared me to death. Linda was frightened because she thought Ron might not survive. But he did. I was also afraid that he was going to be paralyzed plus never walk or use his arms again. I’m sure Ron can never thank Bruce and the rest of the paramedics enough for what they did to save his life. It’s amazing how Bruce knew Ron. Without the paramedics including Bruce’s help, Ron wouldn’t be alive and Linda would be a widow. But she’s not. Collapsed lungs are serious. Ron and Linda still think about that night. Ron has broken ribs and shoulder blade. Plus punctured lung. I’m sure he will always hold a place in his heart for those who were there for him.

I'm not sure how they got the shot right before that of the truck driving in front of the train; perhaps they green screened it or had the truck positioned at an angle were it only looked like it was in front of the train.

That pickup weighs no more than 5,000 pounds. This train obviously has more than one boxcar, not to mention a locomotive (train engine that pulls the train cars) that weighs about 268,000 pounds....its obviously heavy and like they say "A TRAIN HITTING A CAR IS LIKE A BICYCLE HITTING AN EMPTY SODA CAN"

    Remember a train can weigh well over 100000 tonnes and are fast, it is hard to judge the speed of a moving object when it is coming straight at you especially in low viability such as a night.
    Plus the emotional impact does not just effect your family, it effects the driver of the train and anyone who witnessed the crash.
    THE TRAIN WILL WIN.

    I don't see many of those generation Chevrolet & GMC fullsize pickups on the roads anymore like I use to back in the day, same with the Suburban, K5 Blazer, & Jimmy models.

    No, the weight from an empty coal car is the weight of 200 personal cars like you and I drive. The engine of the train weighs in around 2,000 tons (or so a train engineer told me). Take the weight of the engines add the weight of all the cars and the load and then calculate the momentum. My guess is they stopped the train there for the sake of this being a reenactment.

    I too am a railfan and I have to say that ajaaniajaa's numbers are incorrect. Only loaded coal cars get up to 286,000lbs. An empty freight car weighs about 60,000lbs. Today's road engines like ES44AC's and SD70ACe's are about 455,000lbs. The engine in the video looks like a GP30 with Alco trucks. I may be wrong though. That wngine weighs about 245,000lbs. And lastly A train hitting a car, is like a car hitting a soda can.

    Wrong, he knew the train was there ("I thought I could beat the train"), and it is the drivers responsibility to be sure the track is clear, also the horn would be enough warning (unless they are deaf or have their music way too loud).

    I don't think you should be judging a locomotive's manufacturer by its size. For me, I distinguish an ALCO road switcher from an EMD by the angle of the center windshield window panes, the flat front of the short hood, the contour of the cab roof, absence of fan grilles on the roof, the large radiator grilles towards the rear, and the AAR "Type B" trucks.
    But that's just my opinion. If you're speaking from your own experience, then that's fine.

    We all never beat the train especially a good Samaritan who tries to stop that damn burglar. If I were that truck driver, I always look, listen, and live so I don't want to lose my life just like he does despite a major crime alert that must be stopped before police arrived

      ***** - You're right, it wasn't smart of him...Most accidents on Rescue 911 happen because of people's poor judgement, carelessness, etc...Honestly, I don't know how Ron survived!
      The quote from his wife sticks with me: "There must've been an angel or guardian looking out for [Ron] somewhere...because...you don't normally tackle a train and come out on the winning side..." How true.
