- A semi truck loses its brakes on a winding mountain road. This segment was taken from Episode 220 which aired on February 26, 1991 on CBS. This particular version of the segment was taken from a 30-minute syndicated episode, so about two minutes were cut out to make room for commercials.

*** THIS IS A RE-ENACTMENT *** It was filmed in CALIFORNIA... it was aired on Rescue 911 as they recreated cool and amazing shows. Another show was HEARTS OF COURAGE they did a recreation of this and it was film in Cape Breton, with stunt drivers, but they made it look like Wayne and my Dad (Lou) were driving.
Your dad is a hero. There’s no doubt he saved Wayne’s life that day. I hope that you, your dad, and the rest of your family are doing well.

I remember watching this episode wen I was 8 years old an now I watch it again now I’m 35 years old
When I was a kid in the late 1950's we had a trucker who attended our church. One day his two little kids came to stay with us, and ended up being with us for nearly a year. Their father had a runaway truck up in the Grapevine, between Bakersfield and Los Angeles. He went off, and his truck exploded when it hit the ground. He was pulled out of the burning truck by another trucker who had seen him go off. He was badly burned, and was put in a burn center in LA. His wife went to be by his side as he fought to live. He was there for nearly a year before he could come home. He never got the name of the man who saved him and was forever sad about that. As soon as help arrived he had left without anyone getting his name. He said he never passed a truck after that, that he didn't wonder if it was the man who saved his life. This was an awesome video. It reminded me of that time so long ago. There is not anything greater before God, than being willing to risk, or to lay down your life for another. These two glimpsed each others soul that day.
Louie was my great uncle. This story was told to me as a child and now I recently told my kids about it. His legacy lives on!
He is a Canadian legend.....I drove semi dump in 1993-1994 then worked for Illinois central....after Canadian national left me hanging I was forced to buy out loosing my pension but getting a huge lump sum....your uncle has alot to do with me getting back into trucking

This may, or may not be a re-enactment, but I KNOW this does happen because it happened to my brother, Larry, in Utah coming off Parley's Canyon. His brakes gave out at the top of the mountain and he was already headed down. Another trucker friend was behind him, and took the chance and passed him, got in front of him and applied his brakes for both of them, and slowed him down enough to go into the run-away truck lane and get stopped. Larry told us the story himself. He was terrified, but came out of the experience with a greater respect than he already had for his fellow-truckers. Those mountain roads can be treacherous and having a driver take the chance to help you get stopped is amazing.
Sadly we had a simular event here in australia but both truckies died

I remember it like it was yesterday. I'll never forget how tight he hugged me that day after we stopped! Wayne god bless his heart was my best friend. I retired two years after he did. It was a story to be told, I'll tell you that!
The embrace at the end it just goes to show you how amazing friendship is and how tight knit the trucking community is

I remember seeing this as a child and I grew up to be a trucker. Thank god most mountains in the US have ran-away-truck ramps.
I prefer to be use my jake and maintain the braking system. Hopefully I never have to use one of those puppies. It looks like a wild ride.
then you get billed for using it and them having to fix it right? also if it's a windy hill you still gotta make it down to the ramp while constantly building momentum, doesn't sound like fun to me lol

Saw one happen once. Was a half mile or so behind the trucker and had no idea anything was wrong, and next thing I see he's halfway up the runaway ramp and gravel spraying everywhere. This was on Lolo Pass, when they'd just got done rebuilding it (1977 I think).

This was back when television actually had some intellectual value. MOST, if not ALL, of the crap on television now would insult the average two year old! I rarely watch it anymore unless it's a rerun of a much older program. I sure watch a lot of videos now.

I was thinking the same thing, I totally miss these days. Nowadays you cant even watch the Simpsons anymore. Its simple, they show what people want to watch and decent family programming has terrible rattings while programs like sister wifes and Jazz the Transgender teen are very popular.
So? And just what is wrong with who makes the best cupcakes, and, and naked people running around in a forest eating pine cones, and who can make the best cake in 3 seconds? And being forced to watch 2o minutes of commercials for a 60 minute show? I have no problems with this. No. None whatsoever. Mindless uselesstainment at it's finest. Oh!! Yes!! And let's not forget drug companies selling drugs to cure my hang nails with a side affect if death? Hmm?
As a Truck driver not being able to stop loaded is a nightmare, happened to me a few times but thank God for keeping me safe, when things like this happens stay calm & think theres always a answer to any problem...Stay safe & God bless😊
After watching Ice Road Truckers I learned that the connections to the brakes often have to repaired.
This is so good I'm cryin'. Sooo glad that driver had the skill to save his friend.
We need more courageous men like this in our society. These days, if you do that, the trucking company would fire you for intentionally wrecking their vehicle and putting yourself at risk.

When I go to drive, I make sure everything is spotless on the truck. Everything has to work if it don’t, I won’t move it. And if the company doesn’t have a trolley brake or a Johnson bar I refuse to operate that tractor.
FYI if you don’t understand why I wouldn’t operate a tractor without a trolley brake or a Johnson bar you haven’t been driving long enough to understand what that’s really for.

This is why all carriers should have CB radios. It can be useful to help others who loose their brakes as well.

the was a reason they were meant to be on that same road that day (if the guy who lost his breaks was alone, he probably wouldn't be here). Yes the other one risked his life for his friend. It's scary but love the outcome and though I'm sure the guy was freaking out (inside at least) the one that saved him remained calm
This was the 1st Rescue 911 episode I had seen when I was a kid and immediately, I became a fan of the show.
Although this happen many years ago, I can only imagine how horrific it could be. It was quick thinking and right decisions that made both drivers safe that day.
WOW! That sent shivering old memories down my spine! Back in '82 during my 2nd road year I burnt my trailer brakes on a canyon road westbound coming out of Denver. My Astro95 Jimmie didn't have a Jake Brake and I grinded the rig up against the canyon wall get it stopped...
About all you can do at that point, or jump out hope you survive. My father in law lived in Durango he drove trucks all over said only guy he knew survived Wolf Creek Pass was guy jumped out of the cab just going into 180 curve. He said sign at the top tells you 11 mph 80k lbs better follow that or else.

This is one I had never seen. Wow, that was some crazy courage and skill ! As they said "He was a friend before that, but he's a special friend now"... Like guardian angel-type friend. What made Wayne pass Louie back there ? Angels.
i live about an two and a half hours from kelly’s mountain, where this happened and i remember my dad telling me this story when i was younger. i seen this video on facebook not long ago and going through the comments i was so sad about the people commenting and saying this is made up or the roads aren’t that bad. this story is true and those who say the roads aren’t bad clearly haven’t been there

These new drivers who say that dont have a clue how roads were back then and how shitty the brakes worked and most trucks didnt have jake brakes back then either. They have improved the roads alot since back then. I remember them. Alot of them were no joke. The drivers today would never be able to make it in trucking back then.
@@jackmeoff2274 also the newer trucks are far better in both safety and tech than something like an old 80's kentworth. theres a reason why people dont talk as much. this newer tech does the work for us. that means more money for the business. im not gonna go into that fully since ill end up starting an argument

When I was a kid I watched rescue 911... At age 23 I helped a woman who was having a seizure in the middle of a IGA isle... She was about to swallow her own tongue. I remembered a episode about how u use a pen to flip the tongue down then use the pen sideways to prevent it from happening again. I was so relieved when the ambulance got there. You never know what u might learn from watching this wonderful old show

You just have to turn them to their side so they don't choke on saliva and foaming. They can't "swallow" their own tongue.
Rescue 911 taught a whole generation the amazing lifesaving potential of the 911 system. My home county even decided to get 911..........in 2007.
That was real smart of him to use his truck to help his friend slow down his run away truck.
The driver saved that man's life. As an X trucker, I would have done the same with not hesitations.
The judge in Colorado gave that young kid a 110 year jail sentence for a brake malfunction. 4 people did die in that accident, but this kid will always think of those four deaths and should not serve any jail time.
@@noelmelendez4770 You're bold faced lying. That wasn't a brake malfunction. The Colorado driver went too fast down a steep grade. He road his brakes until they started on fire, then he *intentionally* bypassed not one, but TWO runaway truck ramps.
That was 100% pure irresponsibility on the driver's behalf. The equipment worked fine. The driver's brain, however, did not. He deserves all 110 years in in prison.

The premise of the show was that it contained true stories of rescues. Most stories involved professional rescue workers, but a few stories (such as this one) were about rescues by civilians.
Great video..I can see how this event could occur between 2 experienced drivers..Glad they are both ok and no one was injured badly.

A truly beautiful story as a truck driver for a farm hauling cattle & heavy & wide John Deere tractors I see the grand scheme of him saving his partner’s life. Good luck to both of you & God Speed, for he , or Christ had to be Co-pilots to both of you, I too was saved by Divine intervention on 08/09/2003 when I was shot 7 times at my folks farm house, during a home invasion, thus I know first hand about being saved by Divine intervention, thanks so much for sharing such a lovely story from such a noble profession.
thats so much for putting that on here! That's been so many years ago, but I still remember seeing it on television! I had forgotten all about it! Kudos to the drivers. That's super. Just imagine if the flatbed hadn't decided to pass in the first place. The poor guy wouldn't have had a chance.
Always follow gut instinct. He didn't conscientiously know, but there was a reason he passed. And they made it through. Safely
Moral of the story: if you're going to start down a long "treacherous" grade, stop and inspect your brakes first.
I wish that they would release this show on a complete series DVD set. Always enjoyed this program and would love to see it all again!

this show is responsible for me entering the fire service. as a kid mom and I would watch every show..
35 years in the hammer all over this USA and Canada!! And have seen and been through some bad!!!!! Times but this vid makes me proud!!👍
I have driven 110,000 pounds and that scared me the entire time. I don't drive trucks anymore, but I have a LOT of respect for truck drivers. An old guy told me that you always go down a hill in the same gear you would go up the same hill.

This was my favorite show when I was a kid in the 90's can't believe finally I found it on TH-cam

There's a short story called "Runaway Rig" about a semi losing it's brakes on a hill. A good read.
Now that is one very experienced driver.....Good effort.

They need to make this show again I love this show I remember it from when I was a kid my mom was a firefighter and we always watched it with her when she was home thank you so much for posting them I hope you post more or all of them if you haven't already.

This was an American TV show. They probably did that so U.S. viewers could more easily understand the speed and pressure.
allgood2000 actually it was to get the word out about the relatively new 911 system as well as to show importance of learning Heimlich maneuver and CPR.

If I'm not mistaken they did this reenactment up on Everitt Memorial Highway which takes you to the top of the tree line on Mount Shasta in Northern Cali. Extremely beautiful drive! Steep grades and definitely sharp turns like described on this show.
Non-trucker here. To the truckers out there...would the truck that did the stopping have to towed? I imagine his brakes were in pretty bad shape as well after that.

It’s been 39 years since this happened. I was 17 months old at the time. When I saw what was happening, I was terrified because I didn’t think that Wayne’s truck would stop in time because of the road they were on and he lost his brakes. But thank goodness he was saved. My brother Andrew was born in 1984 but in September 14 8 months after this happened.

That is one of the worse fears a trucker can have is loosing their brakes on a mountain. My brakes usually start smoking a little going down a mountsin but i have never lost them completely - knock on wood!

I,m a logger and I don;t understand why he didn;t try to down-shift the truck !!! Jake breaks were prob not out back then but he did have a standard so I don't understand why he didn;t down shift it

Most places do
They're pea gravel, not sand. Sand packs when it gets wet and then the truck would go right up and over it. I actually saw a runaway use a ramp once, near Lolo Pass (Idaho/Montana border). Sprayed gravel like a fountain.

The rpms have to match your road speed.With no brakes and the truck accelerating,Its unlikely you would be able to get it into a lower gear

@@a-ddaigrepont3375 At first he could've downshifting one gear, then the truck would gain speed and either you shift up or blow the motor. Then you would have no control. Downshifting wasn't going to do anything in this case

I remember watching this on TV back in the day. My dad became a truck driver not long after so thought for sure my dad would end up in this scenario one day. Luckily he did not.

Im now 37 but watching this as a kid I learned skills I have actually used to save lives and help with injuries. This was back when tv was actually good.

I am glad that now there are run-off ramps,2019. They look funny when passing them, but , boy,, they work. I have seen in use. Thanks to whoever made them.

I remember watching this episode when I was a kid.
The video says he had a 47k pound load but then later says his truck was way over the 80k pound gross limit at 49 tons. If that was so then it is no wonder he lost his brakes trying to go down such a steep grade.
Compression brakes did not come standard on trucks like they do today so most likely he did not have any.

108,000 lbs is the legal load on a tri acle in Nova Scotia. We run a tad heavier than interstate weights. If he did infact have 45,000 on he would be pretty close to 80,000. Maybe a tad over. I would have to watch the video again but I believe they were discussing the weight of each truck.

In the video, the freightliner is leading, then the pete passes him, then they show the pete loosing its brakes. Then somehow the pete stops the freightliner which now has the bad brakes?
Canada allows more weight than the USA always have and trucks were alot lighter in 84

Trucking in mountainous areas as well as hills in general is very dangerous without adequate brakes. If the driver had done an air brake test, he would have realized that he had low brake pressure. The air brake test tells you everything regarding your air pressure but visual inspection of the brakes and hoses is paramount.
Agreed, It's pretty damn important to do a pre-trip inspection every day to ensure all 4 of your breaking methods (Tractor parking, Trailer Parking, Trailer Hand, and Pedal) Are all working properly. As well as getting out every day to check the slack, it only takes a half hour to check your entire truck over to make sure everything is working properly, and it can save your life!
Wow doing a pretrip inspection saves your life hmmm even with a pretrip inspection your still going to say no problem running well guess what Mr expert your talking out your ass you can do one inspection and low and behold some catistrophic happens and you say you did a 30 minute inspection that wasn't supposed to happen and it just bit you in the ass and your sitting in a repair shop still saying that wasn't supposed to happen reality just bit your ass hard and now money is being payed out welcome to the real world driver shit happens

You are a dumbass and not a truck driver. This wasn’t a pretrip issue. He lost his brakes going down a mountain becuase he was in an improper gear and didn’t use his jakes in the right gear. He rode his brakes and didn’t snub brake and his brakes heated up and lost all braking power. Lmao. You clearly have no trucking experience. This same thing will happen on a brand new truck
Driving is a dangerous job. I did it for 27 years. A judge in Colorado gave that young kid in Colorado a 100-year in jail sentence for an accident with faulty brakes that could not stop while going downhill.

it's a re-inactment, to start with. It wasn't even done on the same mountain. And i'm curious as to just what Canadians are supposed to talk like. Most trucks still register air in Imperial measurements and a lot of drivers still use MPH as reference.
Trucks in Canada still use PSI. Speedometers have both MPH and Km/h

The yellow and red buttons have nothing do to with the jake brake or 'motor brake'. In fact, the jake brake IS the motor, or engine brake. The yellow and red buttons are the tractor brake and trailer brake. They have nothing do to with the engine, just the brakes.
He didnt say anything about the jack brake. His truck probably didnt have a jake
so where does the air come from supplying the yellow and red buttons then. from a compressor that is attached to he engine. From I gather from your information is either you a super trucker that has no clue or you have never sit in a truck. So don't make your self look more like an idiot and some research.
@@a-dog8075 If he didn't have a jake he should've been WAY down in the gearbox before he rolled over the top of that downgrade. Old buddy of mine gone on always said you got ON E shot when you find yourself in the wrong notch loaded. Get it in a gear that'll hold you back THEN. You can always go up.
