Autos may be a very cheap model of transport but I think the overwhelming number of autos is also a hindrance to commutation. They should be phased out bit by bit. Other sustainable modes of transport should be developed.

I live in powai and i had observed that maximum issues wheather its related to traffic jams or rash drive it is due to autos mostly. This causes chaos among car owners and buses as well but on other ride if we see, autos are cheap and convinient modes of transportation specially in mumbai.

The whole city is a giant suburb. You have "so much cars"? Bombay and Delhi have far more so Idk what you mean. But if you have a lot of cars that's understandable cos public transport is virtually non existent there. Amenities and facilities are virtually non existent. I had done a project on this around the 1990/91 during my school. Had interviewed many many auto union people and RTO officials that time. The main reason I was given was that the older Autos (the ones with a high foot passenger well that had a single stroke engine) were incapable of traveling great distances. Their engines would heat up and fail. Also, as the autos started getting more and more powerful autos were launched (the autos with lower foot rests) They spread out more towards Mira, Bhayender, Mulund etc to get better fairs. Something that cabs can do, but due to cost factor, people chose the autos and the unions were happy with it.

The best mode of transport in S Mumbai especially throughout Churchgate fort colaba, apollo bandar, causway, to marine lines area is have a bicycle. Trust me. With the traffic signals and no driving zones and one way lanes, you'll reach places faster on a bicycle. I've lived in churchgate. That's the best advice I can give. Especially during morning 7-11 and evening 6-10 during weekdays all traffic comes out of offices and goes towards the stations..bicycle your way through is the fastest because cabs there are full and you have to wait in lines, and that's the only mode of transport apart from bus.

Although I can currently afford to book cabs like ola luxury, but given the option, especially in Mumbai where autos go only by meter (unlike Delhi, Lucknow, Hyderabad (I can name many)) I will always opt for an auto. It's a cheap and comfortable ride. If autos breaking rules is the problem, then banning them is the same as banning knives which can cut both vegetables and throats, purely illogical. Disciplining them is the solution, not banning them. One should always have access to cheap modes of transportations as well.

@@comfortable_east Don't know what do you mean exactly by unsafe? If you are referring to structural strength then even the rickshaws, cycles, transport carriers, buses and even cars not having 5 star NCAP crash ratings should be banned. If you are referring to crimes, then they can happen in any vehicle (remember nirbhaya ?). Also, blindly copying the USA won't get anyone anywhere apart from always feeling inferior. There transport needs are way too different from us. They have comparatively wider roads and streets and lesser population density. Have you seen the huge parking lots they've in front of many of their malls, shops etc? US isn't as contested as we are and hence we need small width autos far more than we need these 2 auti width SUVs being driven by mostly one person just to show off their status and sake of looking good- exactly what you mentioned. We need to prioritise efficient use of public resources first, and maybe later we can go for looks.
As for the income thing- these are very long term objectives. Good knows how long it can take.

I am living in Mumbai Central since 2009 and we used to see around 500(!) taxis parked on the road from Maratha Mandir Theatre to Reliance Super Store every night where they used to sleep. I would get up early in the morning to go to school and see hundreds and hundreds of taxi drivers washing their cars and drinking tea and eating bun-maska. This was before Mumbai Underground Metro's construction was started. There would be no noise on the road, it was so peaceful. Then suddenly, in June of 2015 the underground metro constructions started and they occupied literally the whole 6-lane road and the footpath. In just a few days all the hundreds of taxi drivers had to flee their taxi stand. Seven years later, now, more than half of trees on the roads are gone, there is a very narrow road, half of Mumbai Central Station is encroached. I like the development, don't get me wrong but it's not like how it was.

Our city has been developed for a long time, it is not new like Delhi. This is not the right solution. We (Bombayites) are real urbanites and so we understand certain things better than others about city governance.
We need a Mumbaikar in power, not these villagers. Both juhu and sobo are ruined with these metros and coastal roads. Why don't they just improve the existing roads and local trains, there is sooo much scope there.

Back in 2020 a rickshaw came from behind (while turning) and ran over my leg and went away. Thankfully there was no fracture but it costed me a decent sum for the check up and all. Once I was in extended suburbs of Mumbai, my iPhone slipped out of my pocket and the rickshaw wala just ran away with the phone. These are not at all good people. I am from South Mumbai and I really hate auto rickshaw coz they are the only main reason for traffic in Bandra n Andheri (IMO), 2nd they dont have sense of driving, never watch mirrors b4 crossing and lastly I crashed into auto twice coz of their foolish driving (I made them pay for what they did to me). Auto Rickshaw not following traffic rules and they always want to enter in 2 inch of gap!!! why??? Auto Rickshaws should be exile from main city areas(IMO)

Autorickshaws needs to be phased out. Because of its three wheel structure they can able to turn abruptly causing accident s. Instead of autos, 4 wheel vehicles small in size like nano or smaller than that like one that are used in golf course runs on electricity or FFV should be adopted.

People could obviously use buses for local travel and walk a few meters for a bus. Though the buses (or any public transport) are so poorly maintained, and are very unsafe, thus most people prefer travelling through private vehicles and, sometimes, auto.

Traffic congestions aren't caused by bad driving habits unless someone end up doing accident to block the street.
Will banning auto for rush driving work if that auto drivers become taxi driver next day?
Auto doesn't look American, if that's the problem then nothing to say, I find autos beautiful in their own way.
Just a more energy efficient and faster, cheaper way of transport than taxi.
