Why Indian Cities Dont Have a Grid || भारतीय शहरों में ग्रिड क्यों नहीं है ?

  • In this video, we explore why Indian cities lack a grid layout, diving into the historical, cultural, and practical reasons behind these unique urban designs. Unlike Western cities that follow a structured grid, Indian cities evolved under different influences-ancient planning like in Jaipur, colonial transformations, and rapid urbanization. We discuss how high population density, existing infrastructure, and local geography make it challenging to implement grid-based layouts, along with the impact of rapid growth that often outpaces planning efforts. We’ll also highlight ongoing developments in urban planning and Smart City projects aimed at enhancing India’s infrastructure. Watch till the end to understand why a grid system might not be the best fit for Indian cities! #IndianCities #UrbanPlanning #Infrastructure #CityGrid #SmartCities #IndiaGrowth #Urbanization #CityDesign #UrbanDevelopment #IndiaInfrastructure #CityLayout

Indian cities are just villages with flyovers.
Post independence we haven't created a single independent(not planned suburban extensions like noida or navi Mumbai) planned city with great economic output. And before you guys say anything chandigarh is just a retirement hotspot not a economic hub like mumbai.

A significant reason for the difference in development is that America gained its independence many years earlier than India. While America was progressing rapidly, India was engaged in a struggle for independence, and the British colonial rulers showed little regard for India's development, focusing instead on exploitation. After gaining independence, India faced challenges and was not in a position to initiate development immediately. However, after several years, India has become much more stable, and we can now see planned cities under construction. In 30 to 40 years, we can expect to see even more planned roads and urban developments in India.

No, US suburbs were developed in the post world war 2 boom, aided by a car centric lifestyle. It's a modern creation and it started not before the 40s. So, time can't be a factor here. The real factor is space, India lacks land

Their are 20homes besides a service road area so people consulted govt to develop a road and they said their is gap between one after one home. So still the gap fills with homes they won't start building a road
What happened is after people builted homes in service road area
    what happened is happened
Atleast now they should implement first constructing roads before homes

This can be done in India also, as most of the cities and towns are getting old and need redevelopment, government can put out a policy of cluster development. People can come together can rebuild that towns, the mim size can be of 500 acres. No property tax for 10-20 years, the FSI should be increased to 10 or above. No maintenance cos [done in magarpatta city pune] Goverment can provide solar electricity and rain water harvesting system so free electricity and water for people. The cities of Europe are also very old, but they are also built on the grid system. Even 2000 years ago, the cities of the Roman Empire were built on the grid system. This is not a matter of circumstances but of civilization. 😮
After the Indus Valley Civilization, the people of india keep their houses clean and beautiful but not their neighborhood and city 😮

In our place, people first build a bigger house, whether there is a road or not, especially this happens more in villages, wherever you see, there is a fight for the road.

The City Beautiful "CHANDIGARH" grid city. A Swiss-French architects Le Corbusier & Pierre Jeanneret. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Independent India’s first Prime Minister, laid down the new city when he said “Let this be a new town, symbolic of freedom of India unfettered by the traditions of the past an expressions of the nation’s faith in the future”. The city is a product of Nehru's Vision.

Problem is over population over pollution over traffic cars over crowded cities and most important over consumption 😅 it will be a big disaster for our country.... if most of land will have cities.... so there is a chance in future we will also import wheat and rice 😊

  • @MarcSpctr

For people saying it poor planning or encroachment.
it has nothing to do with that.
India is an OLD CIVILISATION as compared to USA, so our cities were already built this way.
even Europe is an Old Civilisation.
America is probably the MOST RECENT discovery.
If you go to Europe, China, etc you will find cities this was as well, where there is no grid system.
be it France, Italy, UK, etc
    And this is actually good.
Look at the thumbnails, how boring the US city looks.
Like I love such Ungrid cities.
The curves on the road, roundabout, etc feels so nice as opposed to just straight lines.

I think american cities are not the best example for city planning. They are divided in residential, commercial and other zones which are very far apart from each other and forces residents to use cars. In india we have quite opposite where you have shops near your houses. I think european cities are best example for us in that they too have houses and commercial area near to each other (everyone walks there) and they are very old and therefore does not follow grid pattern but are very well planned. Tokyo is another great example.

    I prefer NON-GRID system.
    Grid system looks boring.
But even in non-grid system, the cities in India really need to be well planned.
like, you choose. Do you like houses or cities of US or Europe, like vienna, Italy, France, UK, etc
    US just looks SOUL LESS.
