Simple Grip Change to Stop Your Slice - & Hit Driver Straight

  • Can a simple grip change stop your slice and help you to hit your driver straight?
You and I both know that a grip change won't have every golfer hitting their driver dead straight but your grip controls the club face and therefore the impact position and small changes can have amazing results.
If you ask yourself questions like how do I stop slicing a golf ball? How do you get a CONSISTENT golf swing? How to hit driver straight?
Then a great place to start is the golf grip. It may not be the complete answer but could provide a wonderful foundation to build a more consistent golf swing.

    ABOUT DANNY
    -----------------------
Thanks for stopping by. I created this website as a resource just for you to support you on your golfing journey as I know how tricky learning this game can be…to say the least!
I personally found learning the game too long and difficult in the early days. I read all the books, watched all the videos but my game was not improving. Then after studying various forms of neuro science, motor learning, psychology and personal development in less than two years I went from struggling golfer to the final stage of the Open Championship.
On TH-cam and my personal website (www.dannymaude.com) I will bring you the most up to date training, training that is getting tangible results for my clients right now. I don’t know where you are in your golfing journey, you could be just starting out or maybe your body isn’t as flexible as it once was or you’ve got ambitions to slash your handicap. Wherever you are I’ve created a place here you can learn, share your ideas, ask questions and get all the support you need to enjoy this great game.
Be prepared though. If its a quick fix you are after Im not your man. Here I will give you step-by-step advice that you can take straight to the practice ground and apply to the course but it will require you to get stuck in, screw up…a lot, practice some more and then watch those scores tumble
I’ve had the pleasure of coaching thousands of students all around the world and if you are up for the challenge and are ready to get in the game…LETS GO TO WORK!

    This guy is the MAN!
Any + every time I cant find my swing + all over the place, ready to throw my bag in lake- I go straight to his YT channel!
He literally has a video for every swing issue I've had + fixed every single one!
It's almost like I called him up, told him the nightmare results I'm getting + then he does a quick 10 min video addressing the exact issue Im having!!
Quite possibly would have thrown in the towel at this pt., if not for his videos! No BS!

Took this idea to the range on Saturday. Played in a gale both on Sunday and Monday and there was no questions I was a lot straighter. Today I played again and did not miss one fairway. For a 21 handicapper, I was impressed with myself but even more impressed with the lesson that showed me what I was doing wrong. Cheers Danny.

Before I gave up golf because of my big slice I decided to take some lessons.Tried a few different instructors and they all made it so confusing and complicated and I didn't get rid of the slice.
I have tried your very simple explanation and it worked !!!!! In some cases I really think some golf instructors make it complicated so you keep coming back!

Danny, sincere thanks for the ongoing collation of golf videos and tuition. Have got down to five and started fading/slicing the driver and a quick ten min review of the above video has stopped the fade/slice. Even nine months old, this video shows the basics golf grip that is forever handy to review once in a while. Your message is simple, consistent, and easy to follow each and every time, and love the two-minute review at the end of each video. Regards Antony

Danny, I’ve been bingeing your videos for the last few weeks since getting back into golf after 15 years away and thoroughly loved them. The driver is my least confident club and the one I’m working on the most right now. I’m adamant it’s my grip that’s wrong and I think the little mention you made here about making the correction with the _wrist_ not the _arm_, could be exactly where I’ve been going wrong. Looking forward to trying this out on the range!

    Danny,
I’ve been waiting for this lesson for a while .
Great lesson. This is the foundation of the the golf swing. Good foundation is the key to a good swing. I’ve been Working on the grip recently, and I was certainly on the right track , but this lesson is “the icing on the cake” so to speak. Shows the finer points I needed . May see you up the range again !

This is one of the best swing setup revelations I've ever gotten from a video. I have CONSTANTLY fiddled with my hand positions on the club, and have NEVER realized that in putting my trail hand in the correct position, I have ALSO flared out my elbow, causing either a chicken wing/over the top to control the face, OR a balloon slice when I keep my elbow in to put pressure on the ball on impact. THANK you!

You are the first person that really made me pay attention to being instructed how to grip.
All the other instructors just show you how to place the hands the usual way with the V,s
pointing between head and right shoulder but the details you gave here regarding the left and right

I wasn't planning on watching this video because I figured my slice had nothing to do with my grip. I'm so glad I decided to watch and learn how my right hand was in the wrong position. All it took to fix my slice was rotating my right forearm as Danny teaches. After watching and playing a few rounds - I'm planning on watching every video! My slice is gone and my game is so much better hitting from MY OWN fairway (haha). If you haven't subscribed yet, please do. It's had a tremendous impact on my game. Thanks Danny!

Danny - I needed this grip change as it turns out both of my hands were out of position. After the change though I only saw a subtle improvement. BUT I rewatched the takeaway drill video and the new grip in combination with the proper takeaway have combined to make a very big difference. And neither requires a lot of thought so they should be improvements that I can sustain. Great, fundamental, and clear instructions - thank you!

This is the best explanation of why the grip is so important. A day before I saw this latest video, which caught my interest, I did adjust my grip on both hands by personal experimentation to get results in closing the face. I ended up doing what you said without knowing why? My shots are now always going straight or with a slight draw as a result. Kudos for bringing reason to golf instructions. I have had my neutral grip for over 40 years and never considered changing it. In my attempts to close the face by pronating the lead hand I had occasional success but struggled to do it consistently. Now it is easy. Thanks for the great update.

Watching for a second time now. Played yesterday afternoon and had 7 pars in 9 holes. After a lifetime of slicing (I am 70) I finally understand what squares the face and the importance of the grip. I have tried everything else; stance change, flatter swing, rolling my arms, etc. to little long-lasting effect. I was once a 6 handicap, now 11 and even at my age aspire to get back to the lower number. Well done, Mr. Maude.

Good info on the grip positions. Been working on this lately and have seen a great increase in accuracy across the board - driver, fairways, hybrids and irons. Your little tip at the end about starting the face closed and then letting your hand "strengthen" the grip is spot on. You, Danny, are my saviour - I have the good fortune to live in a country that boasts the highest 9 hole golf course in Europe. The 8th hole is uphill as are most of the others, and there is a narrow neck around the 180 metre mark with water on the right and a wilderness on the left. I occasionally hit a straight one but usually head for the water. Fortunately I bought a 4.5 metre Callaway ball retriever but even more fortunate for me was looking at your video yesterday. So I tried your grip and, by golly it worked a treat. I love your videos.

I push, slice, and hook. Could happen at anytime while playing. No rhyme or reason. 20 min in my yard with these tips and you have changed my entire world. All of the sudden the ball is flying in a straight line towards my target and consistently! One thing you said almost in passing in this video that was equally important to me as the grip adjustment was the thought of driving through the shot with my right elbow. I have always thought I was missing a key fundamental of the swing, and now I think you have provided it to me. I can't thank you enough for this!

  • @brianmoss9399

Brand new to the game and have been working a lot on just basic ball striking. I’m tall (6’7”) and have a problem with topping the ball. Nearly every swing. I initially thought that it was due to my height but this video pointed out a lot of the very errors that I was making in my swing.
I watched this last night and made the changes to my grip at the range this morning along with a tip from another video. The combination made a huge difference - night and day. Much more consistent in striking the ball.
I know the game has a ton of nuance but this single change has made all the difference for me. My frustration level was through the roof but making that small grip change has given me confidence and I look forward to practicing more and getting better. Thank you!

Hi Danny, I've had a horrid slice (on the next fairway) with almost every drive before today. Having watched this video and downloaded the PDF to look at whilst at the range I have just hit 50 range balls, almost every one went dead straight (bar 2 or 3 when I got tired). I had tried seemingly every video guide on TH-cam, this is the one that really worked. Thank you so much!

Not too long ago I found this other video and this guy was talking about having your back centre belt buckle facing your Target and yada, yada, yada. I tried it because I was trying to obtain more distance. It didn't work for me, but since discovering your video about how to address the ball by lining up with her head behind your hands and your hands behind the ball and now this, with the grip! My drives are straight every time (I line up the correct way). I must thank you once again for making it so straightforward and easy to comprehend.

Viewed and then downloaded your lesson and went straight to the driving range. I had been experimenting with a different grip and setup and after today’s practice I have completely adopted your suggestions. I have always been a good driver but my irons were the biggest problem. What a difference. Great contact and sometimes a little draw. But the biggest improvement was the hybrid and 3 wood. Nice draws and distance.
Hopefully I can keep it going for my match play on Monday.

Danny, I've been struggling for ages with the driver and looked at your driver videos with moderate success.

Wow. I didnt even find your videos - some old timer joined me mid round - i was slicing it badly. Normally i interally tell random folks offering unsolicited advice where to go, but i thought 'what the heck'. What this guy told me, was to rotate my lead hand over, and grip it stronger. It took a few holes, but by the end it was a little bit better. Then, over the next few rounds, it started to click, and i went from one round of +16, to two in a row of +6 and +7, two of my three best ever rounds - because i suddenly gained 20-30y off the tee, and wasnt playing 1-2 recovery shots on most holes. He then told me, it was a guy called "Danny Maude" on youtube - and yep - it was basically the above video. So danny, your work is having a beneficial impact on players, even second-hand! Brought me here, now subbed, and interested to watch more of your stuff. Was also encouraged by seeing a german comment that "Ive tried Piers and Andy, Ive tried Rick, but YOURS...' - because that disengagement from coaching videos and tips was what i felt too! No longer!

@@DanielMaude Well, something of a mixed bag. I got a nice fade once or twice, a decent draw once, but also some massive slices. Thanks for highlighting something so basic and simple, yet crucial. I've always been told my grip was OK, so didn't think I needed to look at this video. How wrong! After viewing, I checked my grip and realised how inconsistent it was. Sometimes OK, but often, because I'm always concentrating on the position of the club in the hand, I didn't realise the importance of the arm position and its effect on the club head. When working through the drill it seems so obvious. Great tip.

When I was shown how to grip a club for the first time "properly", it felt as if I was trying to tie knots with the back of my hands but the more I did it the easier it became, however over time I found my grip started to revert back to when I first started playing so checking your grip occasionally is a good idea, and as usual Danny your little tips are spot on and explained simply and clearly, I'll be rechecking mine tomorrow. Thank you.
