Carl Smith's play call on 3rd down cost the Saints this game. SF had no timeouts left. Just run the ball and keep the clock running. Fourcade didn't help his cause to remain the Saints starting qb. In this game, he was bad.
I didn't remember the circumstances because it was so long ago but I recall feeling like the Saints choked the game away so that sounds about right. Giving Montana any time at all to work with was asking for a loss. I hated those Niners teams so much at the time...
The 49ers may have had Montana as league MVP and did go 14-2, but they were playing all these close games and playing from behind. I mean winning 13-12 and you look at the rest of the season, they seemed like they were playing a step behind It didn't help that the 49ers had no running game. Roger Craig had 439 rushing yards the ENTIRE season. That fumble in the NFC Championship game gave the 49ers the excuse to let him go to the Raiders the next season.
They played a lot of close games, the lack of running game was a big reason, Craig wasn't healthy he had a knee injury that he should have had sugery on it.
@@astrostar49 Think about that statement. He didn’t deserve the mvp despite leading them to a 14-2 record without a running game. It’s not as if they missed going back to the Super Bowl by a lot. It was the smallest of margins.
@@MaximusWolfe The 14-2 record, and being defending SB champs is why he got it. I feel like the 49ers D is just as responsible for the 14-2 record though.
Thank you for this video, just the other day I was thinking about Wolfman Jack, I miss not hearing his voice on TV and radio!!!!!!
The biggest thing I remember about this game is going to bed angry 😂
Same here.💯
😂😮❤😂❤😮😮❤❤🎉😮
The 1990 San Francisco 49ers became the closest team to three-peat.
And remain so.
The debut of the legendary MNF helmet clash intro
Was it?
How fitting craig saying 3 peat but was the reason it didn't happen.
Bobby Herbert held out the 1990 season due to contract dispute.
Big mistake
If I remember correctly the three stars for the 49ers in Montana, Lott, and Rice made huge plays in this game to help sneak out the W.

Craig should be in the hof though. An incredible weapon in his prime.

Yes the 49ers really needed a run game that season. And Montana had a good season, but probably shouldn't have been MVP.
