To me, this was the greatest victory as a Giants fan even more than SB 42 & 46. This was a game where the Giants had no chance with a backup QB and backup RB against one of the greatest teams of all time.
It was even better in the 90's as everyone considered the NFC championship the real Super Bowl. The Broncos saved the NFL from a realignment that was under consideration.
What a game, I remember everyone in our house rooting for the niners. With a backup QB the giants pull off the most underrated UPSETS EVER . A huge hit in the 4th quarter made it Montana s last game as a niner , A fake punt , a stripped fumble in hard hitting classic! Damn
Opposite over here. My college buds and I were watching the game in Ithaca, NY, all of us were Giants fans. And we were all climbing the damn walls and pulling our hair out as the Niners drove down the field with Young in the game. Then we heard "And the Giants have the ball" and saw Taylor prancing around with he ball. That whole 4th Quarter may be the most nail-biting white-knuckling quarter of Giants football I've ever seen. It beats anything in the Giants SB games, IMHO. And respect to the Niners for being just as hard-hitting as the Giants in this game. It's a shame someone had to lose.
The cleanest hardest hitting title game of all time. Nothing cheap nothing dirty (except for jim burt maybe) just hard nose smash mouth football. A classic
I have often said that this was the most physical playoff game I ever saw. It was reflected by Montana limping off the field and Hostettler having to sit out snaps in the middle of the game. I loved the fact it was clean for the most part ... and the Leonard Marshall strip sack of Joe Montana - to this moment - is, IMO, the most vicious clean hit I have ever seen on a football field.
@@ColeSportz ... Jim Burt was simply dirty on that field. Taking out Hostettler's knee and then on the last drive while Hos was scrambling Burt again dove at his knee.

What a game. I completely forgot that Bahr missed that one field goal and that Carthon dropped that easy touchdown pass on the halfback option play. Two plays were seared into my memory for life though: Montana getting wrecked by Marshall and of course Craig's fumble recovered by L.T. What's crazy about the NFL pre free agency is how many great players the top teams had. The 49ers had Steve Young as their backup QB. The Giants had 7 pro bowlers. The last amazing point about this game is look at the Giants coaching staff. Parcells (HC), Belichick (DC), Coughlin (WR). Three HOF coaches on one staff. Hell, Charlie Weis was the G-Men's assistant special teams coach.

I love Phil Simms. He and Eli were/are my favorite Giants of all time. Giants don't win without Hostetler. His ability to run made all the difference in this championship run.
The Niners franchise was never the same after this. Yes they did get 1 more Super Bowl 4 years later, but they never returned to being what they were in the '80s; a dynasty. Since 1990, it's mostly been heartbreak in either the Super Bowl or NFC Championship.
This is great to hear as a Packers fan as I still remember last years divisional game. Broke a lot of dishes when my underfoot hit the table in the blocked punt. The dishes laid there shattered until halftime. I later thanked all my loved ones over the phone for supporting me and realized a game is just game especially when you are at the bottom of the hill in your personal life and in constant survival mode. Ahhh.... I guess that's life...😉

Joe Montana's career would never be the same after that hit by Leonard Marshall at 10:55. Shoot, that hit and Roger Craig's fumble in the 4th quarter pretty much ended the 49ers dynasty.
Montana is an all-time great QB, obviously, but at times, he would hold the ball too long instead of getting rid of it quicker. That hit by Marshall was because Montana held it way too long! He had time to just dump it off or throw it away to avoid that crushing hit.
the giants winning the superbowl after this game, sit the NFC EAST on a super bowl run of going to and winning 4 straight Super Bowls, with the bills losing all 4, the giants started it, then the redskins and the cowboys winning back to back
The number of not just great players on the field but the number of all time goats 🐐 in this game was scary .Montana , Rice , Lott, Taylor . Scary competition.
These two teams had a huge battle on Monday Night Football earlier in the season. The 49ers won that game 7-3. Amazing that the rematch saw the Giants win without Sims. Give me Parcells over Belichick any day!
I saw 3 late hits, 3 helmet to helmets, 4 "hitting a defenseless receiver"...all in the first half. None called. Would've all been called today....smh.
I remember this day vividly, the scoreboard with the 51-3 score of the Bill's game and my grandmother how hates the Bill's said thet were playing like wild animals. Miss you Gram
12:28...Erik Howard with one of the greatest plays in NFL history. To get whipped initially, but have the strength and balance to jackknife back towards the line against someone the caliber of Jesse Sapolu and get his helmet on the ball to knock it out of Roger Craig's arm was incredible. Yes, there was a bit of luck involved, but if he resigns himself to just being beaten on that play, the arc of football history may have changed.
I was a huge giant fan then. We all cheered the boys but also respected the niners. If the giants lost we new they lost to the best. All these years later I find myself a niners fan from that time. Just great football. An iconic time with the best players ever and the best two announcers that ever lived.
When really think about it. How could the Giants or any other team win a game against anyone wo scoring a TD? That alone in a championship game makes it one of the greatest games of all time, esp against that 49ers team. With a 'backup' QB as well. Giants really won that game "against all odds".
An arguable statement, but he played very well and came back from what looked like a serious ACL injury. Hoss is a treasure in the hearts of Giants fans.
I watch these games to hear John and Pat. I sure do miss them. Oh and nice shot by Leonard Marshall to knock Montana out of the game and result in this being his last game as a Niner. I recall it being SO strange when he went to KC. It was blasphemous to not finish out your career with the original team. Nowadays, these dudes might play for 5-6 teams over a 10 year span. Aaaaaah, the good ole days!
Nobody did it like Pat & John, such a great game with today's rules there would be a flag on each hit. Those players earned their money. NFL is soft now and remember they used to sell you on VHS NFL greatest hits
The Niners didn't lose this game on that one play. NY punched them in the mouth throughout. I'm a Rams fan; reminds me of Belichick taking a Super Bowl from the Greatest Show in 2001 😏 Also the 1999 NFC Championship versus that great Bucs D. Rams barely managed to win that one in the end. Not as much now with the rule changes that favor the offense, but back in the day great D typically topped great offense. See NY beating Bills in the SB.

The end of the San Francisco 49ers dominance. The 49ers still haven't recovered from this game. Dominance doesn't last forever.
7:02, What a play, Joe Montana to John Taylor.
Real football
When Simms went down that season and Hostetler took over I thought they were finished.
*"Everbody was doubting."*
*_Jeff Hostetler_*
I was. LOL Most people picked the 49ers to return to the SB except the Giants, N.Y. and N.J. states.
The Field Goal Game! Well coached Game by the GMen!!
Never heard the radio calls from either teams broadcasters.
The way to silence a home crowd is to have the road team kick a game winner with no time left
One of the hardest fought games in NFL history. Although often overshadowed by by their offensive, the 49ers defenses were awesome. The Giants were always defensively awesome.
What made Tom Brady great is he practiced every day vs BILL BELICHICK defenses.
Giants seem to always win with defense, respect
12:28 - LT!!! The Giants Have The Ball!
That year, the Giants beat every team they faced on their schedule. Lost to SF, Eagles and Buffalo. And beat 2 in playoff rematches
There will be no 3 peat! The rumor was that Pat Riley, who has a trademark right of 3 peat, was devasted on this 9ers' loss.
Considering his Lakers failed to deliver on the three-peat when they were swept by the Detroit Pistons in the 1989 NBA Finals
This is football from when real men played. Grind it out till the end, last team with the ball wins.
No, Leonard Marshall’s vicious but clean hit on Joe Montana did not end his career but it mark the end of his time as 49ers quarterback and ushered in the Steve Young era.
