    Gary Danielson threw FIVE INTS and the Lions still should've won. Whole different game 40 years ago. Shoutout Billy Sims, the original running #20 for Detroit (don't wanna snub the great Lem Barney).

    • @davidroberts7282
      @davidroberts7282 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      Danielson was a very mediocre-at-best QB during his career and even that description maybe too kind and polite because a lot of other times, frankly he just sucked. Eric Hipple wasnt much better, but he did show flashes of being a really good, not Pro-Bowl caliber QB but above-serviceable.
      Thats one major reason why those early 80's Lions teams only went so far despite being loaded with great, Pro-Bowl talent on both sides of the ball but like the then-L.A. Rams, what kept them from going further was terrible, woeful QB play. If they had had a Joe Ferguson, Steve Bartkowski, or Steve Grogan second-tier like QB's back then, they wouldve won 2-3 games then they did and gone further in the post-season.
      Detroit Lions, at least in the context of the 1980's, their run ended when Billy Sims suffered an ACL injury next season in a game vs. Vikings and these injuries, back in that time-period were usually career-enders.
      It's very likely that if Sims had never gotten injured, remained healthy for well over a decade or so, Detroit achieves a lot more success but there's a catch...
      They likely don't end up needing a RB in the 1989 draft and probably aren't in the high position to get one anyway so Barry Sanders never plays for the Lions.

Lions quarterback Gary Danielson finished his only career playoff game completing 24 of 38 passes for 236 yards, but was intercepted five times. One of my first NFL heartbreaks involved the 80s 49ers. It was the 1988 NFC Championship Game, January 6, 1989 at Soldier Field in Chicago. I was 7, first year with vivid memories of the Chicago Bears. I was not old enough to remember the 85 team but this was going to be another trip to the Super Bowl, number XXlll to play the Bengals in Miami. I remember my dad saying that SF wouldn’t be able to win in freezing temperatures on the lakefront, we were going to watch the game at a coworker of my dad’s house. It was a disaster , 28-3-I remember going downstairs in the late second half to watch some kids play Castlevania. My dad’s cousin in SF ,a diehard Niners fan,sent us a copy of the San Francisco Chronicle after they beat Cincinnati-I still have that paper.

      @@donnix1192 I remember that game clearly. I was 10 years old in the south suburbs of Chicago watching with my dad (RIP). I remember before the game everyone was saying how the 49ers were a "sunshine" team and how they couldn't play in the cold. I remember the morning of the game I was in the car with my mom and I remember Al Joyner on WGCI FM radio saying "I think it's time for the Bears to kick some 49er butt!" My dad didn't think so. He said that the 49ers would go downtown to Marshall Field's, buy some thermal underwear, and kick the Bears' butt, and that's exactly what they did. We were all Bears fans, but my dad knew that San Francisco was the better team. That game was such a disappointment and the Bears wouldn't seriously contend for Super Bowl for a long time after that.
      In 2010 I saw Jerry Rice in Las Vegas signing autographs and I asked him did he remember this game and he said "IT WAS COLD!!!!"

      Unless you had a Morten Andersen or Gary Anderson on your team back then as PK, most NFL PK's 40 years ago are mediocre, underachieving noobs compared to their modern successors.

    • @davidroberts7282
      @davidroberts7282 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Although, I will say their were some very good, reliable PK's back then like Norm Johnson of Seattle, Raphael Septien of Dallas, and Eddie Murray of course with Detroit. The thing is or the problem with Eddie Murray is that most seasons during his career, he'd be the kind of PK who makes 35-44 and 35/35 on XP's but he tended to have a knack for missing potential game-winning FG's or FG's that closed games. He was extremely accurate except sometimes when you really needed him to be, he choked or missed. In other words, Murray wasnt always the best clutch kicker. Other PK's during that era were much more reliable (and Clutch) like Norm Johnson, and Morten Andersen and when you have the whole world on your shoulders, hopes and dreams of your entire team riding on making that game-winning FG in OT that takes you to the playoffs or wins a playoff game, that's the sign of how great a PK you really are.
      Murray didn't always rise up to that ultimate challenge when his team's and city's hopes were depending on him the most.

      Detroit was the first non-expansion team to lose every game in a full season since World War II. This was their second winless season in franchise history (1942, see below). With this season, the Lions became only the second NFL franchise with two full winless seasons, and the only one still in existence; this was also the first winless season since the institution of the 16-game schedule in 1978 (that was used until 2020). 😂😂😂😂

    I was 13 YO while watching this game with my parents and brother. I was convinced that the 49ers weren't going to make it, but when the missed FG attempt happened, I jumped up, started running through the house completely ecstatic and tackled the closet door, making a mess inside. I heard one of the commentators then say "the 49ers should not have won". I'm hearing so many people say that this week. My father inspected the closet door and concluded that there was no damage and I wouldn't be in trouble, and then he reminded me every year during 49er playoffs not to tackle the closet door. I went to my neighbors house one year during one of the 49er games, so he called over there and said "make sure he doesn't attack the closet door!" The neighbor was like "huh"? This past Sunday evening I didn't have a closet door to tackle because I was in a hotel room, so I thought about going after the bathroom door, but I figured the neighbors would have called downstairs to complain, I could hear my father laughing and rubbing it in "haha whatcha gonna tackle now?". I also kept hearing something in the background to the effect of "history repeats itself, and we're here to confirm it." Good memories, good times!

      We didnt need it, the football was great. It's a luxury but if the scorebug and 1st down line vanished I would love football all the same
      I think one of the reasons they really took a while introducing it is that they wanted the fans to be told the score/time. That way they would linger and stay with the game longer. If you tuned into a game and it's 35-0 in the 3rd you'd probably tune out faster than if the score wasnt posted. Back then you had to stay on the game longer
