Royal Enfield Classic 350 | DJI Audio Adapter and Lav Mic Vlogging Test | Pls read description |

  • Today, we try out DJI's own mic adapter and lavalier microphone, in a motorcycle vlogging situation. DJI list these as being compatible with the Osmo Action 4, but as I have the Osmo Action 3, will it work ???
    This is my first attempt with this setup, so a bit of fettling will no doubt happen in future videos, but as a start point, I think it is acceptable. The camera recording volume is set to -5, and I have increased the volume in editing to +10.
    On the previous setup, Camera volume was -6 then increased to +23 in editing.
    I don't usually record on motorways, as they create too much distortion at speeds over about 55mph, however, although there are imperfection's in the audio, it's no worse than the previous setup.
    I have noticed a "drumming" sound, but I was watching on my television with soundbar and sub. That said, I didn't notice this with the previous setup.
    I think my voice is overpowering the exhaust note, which is something I need to look at, though I didn't really want to introduce another process into editing.
    Thanks for watching.

    Sounds great Ian, off Motorway the levels of your voice and the bike are perfect.! Great Stuff 👍Hope your over your cold soon. Re the gap around your mic adapter, where i have any gaps that may let in water i use the mouldable silicone gel that swimmers use for ear plugs, seals a treat and is reusable.

      Hiya fella.
      Watched a couple of your vids from a year back, both Honour and Clementine. Watched a video from your recent trip to Wales.
      Massive improvement in audio quality. I’m deaf in my right ear and the hearing in my left is deteriorating. Although I can hear your voice, I can’t always make out what your saying. The same applies to speech on Netflix films as well, so it’s not just You Tube. This is all down to my crap hearing and nothing to do with your voice or audio gear. It’s just speech hearing frequency, so everything else, such as exhaust etc sounds fine.
      Watched your latest video. I can now hear what you are saying without the subtitles, so big improvement there. I listened to the exhaust not on all the videos and you have a point. The noise reproduction for the zorst on your new gear is very slightly and I mean very slightly quieter than your last set up and a huge improvement on your earlier set ups.
      For me Ian; your new set up is better. I don’t need to use sub titles to make out what ur saying any more. The exhaust noise reproduction is negligible Ian. I wouldn’t of even noticed it if you hadn’t brought it to my attention.
      So fella; I think your new gear is a success; I hope you agree too when all things taken into account.

I know my settings and positioning of mic which this vid was created on, so I can always return to it. Thanks muchly 👍

    Hi Ian, nice to see you again and I hope your cough soon goes! For me, away from the M6 the voice/bike balance is fine, though at the start of the video (prior to the motorway) the sound had a slightly 'wooly' quality; caused by wind direction, perhaps? The camera angle is fine. I too don't enjoy riding in the rain, though given that we haven't had any since late October, it's not an issue here! A warm 43C here today and 42C tomorrow, so the bike will be staying home.

      Thanks for the input Chris. I agree, something not quite right, I also hear a drumming noise, like it is too bass heavy. A bit more fettling required, as I think the mic is actually quite “hot”, but the adapter hasn’t quite suppressed it enough. I deviated from my usual recording volume of -6 to -5. That’s the first change I will make, but might take it to -8. Ned the rain to stop again 😳🙄😂

    Hello Ian, the audio sounds fine to me, perhaps a just tiny bit more of the engine . The camera view is spot on. If you sew up a tube of chamois leather to fit over the index finger of your left glove it's very good for wiping your visor and would also do for the camera lens.

Thanks for the chamois advice, my gloves do have a visor wiper, but I do prefer the old school felt type pad. The jacket is brilliant, not as bulky/heavy as the textile, and even on the motorway, I can’t feel any wind coming in. With the Keis heated jacket underneath, I am really toasty. Cheers

Whatever I use, can’t be a permanent thing, as I still want to be able to remove the adapter. MotoUK used Sugru (?), which looks really good, looks like it would be a permanent fix. Not going out in the wet stuff is the answer, and to be quite honest, this system is actually better than with my old setup. Cheers

    Thanks for this try out of the DJI lav mic and adapter, I didn't know they existed until Dave ( Mercia Moto) mentioned he was trying one thanks to your video. It worked out pretty well though I see your planning adding the dead cat to lower your voice, won't this reduce the exhaust/bike sound also? I have the Action 4 and use the DJI wireless mics but I'm getting mixed results depending on what bike I'm on. I became so frustrated on my last ride out with Alex ( The Adventures of Bleary View) as wind noise drowned audio badly. This frustration led to an impulse buy of the Insta360 Ace Pro camera in hope of usable balanced audio. I've subbed so I can follow your progress and see what I've been missing 👍😊

    • @ianhughesroyalenfield
      @ianhughesroyalenfield  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the sub, much appreciated. The audio has improved a tad more in recent vids, where I go to Bowness, then up the Kirkstone Pass. I have moved the mic slightly further down, which has improved exhaust sound. My thoughts on fitting the dead cat, is due to there still being distortion when vehicles pass me from the opposite direction, and when I am doing more than 45/50mph. We are off to Heartbeats country next week, so I will leave as is for that, but upon our return, I will fit the dead cat, and position the mic so that it is pointing downwards, plus I might try the volume at -8. It’s all trial and error, but once we have that sweet spot, it’s done ✔️. I must add, Alex had been a great help to me in the past, in all things DJI 😂. Thanks again.

      I use a “Gaming” PC, as it has similar power to a “Video editing” PC, but it was cheaper. A lot of people do use a tablet, and from what I can gather, the iPad Pro’s are the ones to go for. Tiger Ness has released a video, about how he creates his content. You might find it interesting th-cam.com/video/T4QiUakf5QU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=1QqJZuqWPaUx5qfN . When I started, I was using a laptop, but soon out grew its capabilities. I couldn’t afford an iPad Pro, hence why I went down the PC route. It actually suits me well, using an editing software called Davinci Resolve 18 (free version), which looks really complicated when you first open it, but once you get into it, it really does flow well. Davinci is far more capable than I am, and there are a hell of a lot of tutorials on TH-cam about how to use it. Hope this helps.

  •  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I agree with your description. Your dulcet tones are beating out the engine just a little, and the engine sound is good but sounds like I'm listening to it from window. Nothing a bit of tinkering won't inevitably fix, it's a solid set up. The only thing I will say the distortion and artifacts were present at 50, although exceptionally mild and infrequent. Your previous set up was pretty much gold for 50, it was more like 55 and over where that started. Either way ironing the bugs out is most of the fun. I must say it's a very clean set up physically.
    Nice ride too. Take care.

I will try and sort through settings, but I also think a different mic may work. Cheers

      Hi Mark, I too wasn’t confident in the editing department (not being the brightest button in the tin 🫣). It has taken me about 5 years, and 4 different camera’s, not to mention microphones, to get here 😂. I originally started with Windows Editor on my laptop, then bought a gaming pc (similar needs as video editing, but cheaper), then moved onto a free editor called “Openshot” (not great), before getting the free version of Davinci Resolve 18 (brilliant). The interface looks very daunting when you first open them up, but they are actually easier than they look (still takes me about 5 hours start to finish per 30 minute video), and there are a wealth of tutorials on TH-cam, from true beginner upwards. I use Davinci all the time now (except when we are away in Wales). Using the DJI Osmo camera’s, I believe you can use the DJI “Mimo” app, to edit, but I have never used it. Steve Woodman Dix (The Norfolk Thunderbolt) is playing around with that at the moment, and he says it works well, using his iPad Pro, so there is always that option. I wouldn’t recommend going down the Go-Pro route, too many issues, the DJI Osmo Action 4 is the one to go for. Alex (Bleary View) helps me out sometimes with questions on these. It is very satisfying and enjoyable, discussing things, and receiving comments,from like minded people all around the world. I highly recommend it for that reason 😎

    nice vid. Sound is hard to get right, especially when you change part of the setup. IMO the DJI has an advantage over GoPro (can't comment on the newer ones though) as it has a gain adjuster. As for wireless being sterile, I can't say that I agree in full. I use the DJI wireless mic which, like everything has pros and cons. The thing that effects what you might call "sterility" is a byproduct of the proximity of the mic to the mouth which is dictated by the available space to place it inside the helmet. So you could argue that as most wireless transmitters are bigger than a lavalier mic they generally have limited options for placement so are usually placed close to the mouth and thus run "hotter" for voice which requires lower gain and so reduces some of the ambient volume. However, wireless mics in and of themselves do not produce a more sterile sound.
    Now one of the big pros of the DJI wireless is that it's very robust, and by that I mean you can balance not only the camera's gain but also the transmitter's and the receiver's gain levels. In addition, you can opt to record a safety channel alongside the main audio recording that is -2 gain from your selected gain setting which not only reduces the chances of losing audio to unexpected wind noise, it also means if the placement of my mic is slightly different or there is less ambient noise meaning my voice is "hotter" I can opt for the safety track in editing instead (it also makes for easier tweaking as you are conducting 2 setups at once). If you then add the functionality of being able to record the audio onto the transmitter, as if it were a stand alone recording device, you can have pretty much all bases covered to mitigate the loss of audio.
    One thing we can almost certainly agree on is that noise cancelling software ruins the audio/visual connection. I'd call it the audible version of "uncanny valley" we see in android/robotic devices, it's not quite a voice over and it's not quite a ride along commentary. The film/TV trade go to great lengths to get the audio right to convey a sense of action and visceral experience and here are some vloggers using technology to remove that natural connection...

    • @ianhughesroyalenfield
      @ianhughesroyalenfield  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks Ice. I have often considered getting the DJI wireless (original), and putting one of the mics in Clementine’s tailbag. Then just add it in, in editing. Cost can begin to spiral out of control if we are not careful, and tbh, I don’t really want to add any more processes. I think through trial and error with the camera audio settings, and basic editing we will get what we want, as I did before. Cheers

    Sound seemed to work just fine. For me, I aim for three things, simple setup, consistent results and little to no cables inside the helmet. In the harsh environment of the motorcycle, a clean recording of the voice with little to no wind is essential otherwise it spoils the entire video and I personally am not fussed about the engine note. I would say this worked fine but reading your description, you think you need improvements. I have watched my own videos on every type of device from a phone to a television and everything in between and the sound is different every time so not sure you will ever get the same sound from the video. You could try playing around with the sound settings by adjusting the various frequencies in an equalizer but it takes time and with a lot of trial and error but once you find a setting that works then it easy to apply to all your video edits.

      Thanks Alex. I intend to have a play around with the equaliser with Davinci Resolve today. I won’t publish it, just for my benefit. I think the DJI mic, is quite a bit “Hotter” than my old Hama mic, so trial and error is needed. Exhaust note is quite important to me, this wasn’t too bad when played back on my iPad, but not so good through the telly and soundbar/sub. Too deep ! Cheers

    It would be great if all the action camera manufacturers would actually support bluetooth connectivity. I tried an adapter for the insta X3, though it works the setup is a mess as you loose waterproofing and then you have cables everywhere. I understand there is one bluetooth mic that may work but trying to find it to purchase is a problem.

      Morning. The DJI Mic 2 (I think) connects directly to the Osmo Action 4, without the need for a separate receiver. DJI appear to have made a massive leap in connectivity on the OA4, even having a remote, which is something I miss from my old SJcam SJ6 Legend, which still works on the camera which faces me. Cheers

      @@ianhughesroyalenfield Thanks, just being doing some reading, it appears to be a complex situation. Reviews of the Mic 2 say its muffled compared to mic 1 and then is the autopower off of the mic which would mess up what I do while riding, stop / start X3 recording via the quick actions which power down the camera between. My head hurts, need to think about this..

    • @ianhughesroyalenfield
      @ianhughesroyalenfield  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @esrider7765 oh heck. It truly is a minefield. I have even considered the DJI wireless mic 1 set, not to put in my helmet, but to use as an audio recorder and place in Clementine’s tail bag. Then just sync in editing. The trouble is, I am on quite a tight budget, so it can all get quite out of hand. 🤨

    To be honest the offset on your camera isn’t noticeable the picture and sound is good. Oh I find manukau honey is very good if you’re feeling low with bugs etc . Also I chew gin gins an Australian natural ginger chews good for fighting coughs etc

      Unfortunately, it started to rain again when I got home, so poor Clementine is really mucky under her cover 🤦‍♂️. On the next dry day, I will have a dilemma, clean or ride 🤔 or clean, then ride…..or bugger the cleaning, go ride, then clean upon my return (unlikely to happen, due to wanting to get the video done 😂).
