Turtle Tank Update January 2015

  • Has been a while since last doing a turtle tank update. Basic configuration is pretty much the same. Have added a large piece of Cypress wood to create a large basking area and twin caves.
    Have released many turtles over time, just three 3-striped mud turtles remain. Muddy, an eleven year old female rescued off the street as a hatchling, Fern, an injured female hit by a car a few years ago, and Romeo, the only male, rescued from behind the house. The rear of his shell is mostly chewed away, possibly raccoons.
    Same tank. 8 feet long, 3 feet wide, 17" high, 12" of water. Filter is a wet/dry sump filter. An overflow and return in each back corner. Roughly 200 gallons of water including the sump. Sand substrate.
    A mix of live and plastic plants. Live plants include java fern, anacharis (hydrilla), and some I can't identify. A lot of Mopani wood on the sand, turtles love this. They can crawl on, hide behind, and use to scratch their shells.
    Lighting includes heat, UVA/UVB, but there is plenty of shade as well. Mud turtles are shy by nature and do not light bright lights except during basking.
    also have guppies, Cory catfish, and ghost shrimp in the tank.

    You are a prime example of the type of people who should be able to keep exotic or pets in general. I see too many people sticking snakes in tubs convincing themselves that is benificial for snakes when it's not, it's benificial for big company's who want you to spend vbery little on enclosures and space so you can buy more and more snakes, same with the way all other reptiles or mamals are treated in the trade. This tank is absolutely beautiful and naturual and looks extremely stimulating for the inhabitants, well done!

    I do have a couple of curved pine basking spots that I bought at the pet store. They said they were for wet or dry basking spots. Maybe they are giving off tanins. I think I will take one set out and put them in a bucket of water for a day or two and see if they give off the brown water color. I did soak my mopani wood as you did for six weeks before I got my tank. I went and bought all of the mopani wood and soaked it while I was waiting for my tank to be built and delivered. I work for the nearby school district so I think once I am off in June, I will tear it down and put new sand in, clean all of the fake plants. While I am doing that, I will take my mopani wood and put it in our garage sink and see if it stays clear or not.

    I've watched alot of videos about tank setups and honestly yours has to be the best. I just bought a 120 gallon tank for my red ear slide after my 40 gallon somehow cracked. I knew I would need a bigger one anyways soon he's still small but growing. I'm still learning on how to decorate it nicely. Yours is amazing. I want to fill mines with more than half water. Just gotta find the right basking area. Great video

    My man, you have the most natural and beautiful turtle tank I have seen on TH-cam! But why do you feel the need to "rescue" hatchling turtles? If you find them alone that doesn't mean they're in trouble. And if you find them on the sidewalk or something, why not just bring them to a natural body of water straight away? Why do you need to take them home for a month and then release them? Do you just like watching them grow?

    • @BauriBob
      @BauriBob  7 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      I find them in the street, sidewalks pretty far from the water that the female turtle came from. The creeks in this area are in decline, pollution, trash, dumping. I try to head start them so that their chances of survival are a little better than they would otherwise be. Florida is a rapidly developing State which is rough on wildlife here. Just pushing back a little.

    Great to see you!!! Thanks for the update Bob, good to see things are still going good. I have mentioned before that I live in Australia and I used to take on rescue turtles plus I used to do a lot of expo's etc and help run a turtle forum but due to issues with the owner of the forum/ rescue group, I decided to leave (along with many others) but I took on 5 rescue ELN (Eastern Long Neck) turtles and with in the last 12 months I have lost 4 of them (lost 2 in the last week) One got sick and whatever it was, she passed it on and it seemed to go through them all slowly over the last year, no matter how much treatment I/vet gave. We have 1 ELN left who seems healthy at this stage, so I know how hard it is to deal with rescues and how you fall in love with them and want nothing but the best for them. Keep up your great work, look forward to your next video as always.

    It is amazing to see the progress Fern has made since her rescue, and she seems to be a little ham when she is hungry. Any sighting of the snappers in the backyard? We had a painted turtle lay some eggs near the house this past summer, but I am not sure if they should have hatched already or if that will happen in spring since Michigan is a bit different of a climate. Stay safe when out in the swamp.

    • @BauriBob
      @BauriBob  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fern is doing pretty well but her mouth doesn't seem to open as much as it did a year ago or so. We had the vet file down her upper beak but wouldn't risk filing the lower beak as that required more anesthesia which is risky for a turtle. But we may have to try anyway to make eating a bit easier. She is likely developing some arthritis in her jaw as a result of her injury.
      Did not see the big female snapper last year at all. Definitely miss her. Another snapping turtle came up but it was not her. Perhaps this Spring.
      Turtle eggs usually hatch out within a couple months unless cold weather hits, then they may estivate until warm weather returns.

    • @BauriBob
      @BauriBob  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      if your ammonia and nitrite levels are zero and the water is clear, you are probably fine with the canisters. Perhaps switching to larger canisters if you aren't already using big ones. On the other hand, if your ammonia and nitrites are high, sump filtration is the best way to go.

    Great video. My turtles eat my plants so no plastic ones for me. The turtles look great! They also ate all the crayfish and ghost shrimp. The only thing they don't eat are the cory catfish.

    • @BauriBob
      @BauriBob  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      my turtles do destroy the plastic plants, especially the older ones that have absorbed some of the flavor of fish and other real food that I give to them. I normally have a lot of hyrdilla in the tank but I haven't been to the river in a couple weeks. Will replenish soon. That doesn't last either. My turtles do go after the ghost shrimp, especially the large ones. They have injured Cory catfish before which results in their death. The catfish sometimes get into the turtles faces while they are eating and get nipped. If you have a slider or other green turtle, they are even more aggressive with fish and eat much more plant life than mud turtles.

    I am sad to hear you may release them all into the wild. That means no more updates from you. I have all of your past comments in a notebook. That is how I kept all of the information for setting up my tank. Hopefully you will get more rescues and use the tank again? I have rescued many, many turtles and hatched many also. My latest accomplisment has been hatching 21 spiny softshell turtles. I released 11 and kept 10 for the winter. I will release them over Memorial weekend. They are pretty cool turtles! Quite different from the painteds I have hatched and have. Thanks for all of your wonderful info in the past and, hopefully, we will get future updates from you!

    • @BauriBob
      @BauriBob  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      TurtleGrandma everything depends on how Fern's surgery to repair her jaw on Tuesday goes. If she cannot be fixed, may hold on to the turtles a while longer. If I do release them, will not be keeping the big tank. Will keep a smaller tank for rescues which are inevitable during the summer months.

      @@BauriBob I"m here in Florida also and recently like one on Monday and the other on Tuesday I acquired two turtles. Monday a hatchling was brought to me by a neighbor out walking the street and knew I had a couple turtles already so he thought I would appreciate him bringing it to me. Tuesday my son was driving home a small three striped mud was crossing the road and his stopped to avoid hitting it and picked that one up and brought home. They are now both in my 10 gallon until I know what to do with them. SO, here is sit Wed late night (well Thursday early morning LOL) searching around and I have found your videos and tanks most appealing to me.

    • @BauriBob
      @BauriBob  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WilliamsFamily5Kids Just keep in mind that turtles will live 40 or 50 years! If you do release them, place them near water, preferably the same body of water near where they were found. Mud and musk turtles have difficulty eating on dry land, by the way. They need to feed in the water. If you keep them, they need space, shallow water, land. Hard to do with a small tank. Good luck. If you keep them, consider joining the Turtle Forum. You can get lots of info and advice from that website. Here it is: www.turtleforum.com/forum/upload/index.php?act=home

      I actually don't remember what that was. Possible I had two hatchling tanks up briefly if one of the turtles was way smaller than the others. I often have a mix of wild rescue and home hatched turtles, they grow fast, may have separated them. I also have set up a small tank for rescued adult mud turtles which are usually released the following day after they have feasted for a while. I wouldn't mix adults with hatchlings to be on the safe side.

    Thank you for your Video's your aquarium is amazing.
    I am in the process of setting up an aquarium for a year old 3 Stripe Mud turtle. I have found it hard to find information on 3 Stripes so many people say to keep the tanks shallow at only 6-8 inches deep. I love to see how much your turtles are thriving in 12" of water. I am wondering if you can give me your Opinion water depth. Since they seem to have no problems in your 12" of water do you think there would be any problem with them in 18-20" of water as long as there is a generous amount of shallow areas for him to hang out? The tank I have that I was hoping to use is 90 Gallons at 48x18by 24 inches tall. It is drilled at the back for an overflow to a sump but it would need at least 18" of water in the tank for the overflow to work.

    • @BauriBob
      @BauriBob  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Muds generally hang out in very shallow water like drainage ditches, creeks. They can manage deeper water but I've never experimented with anything deeper than 12". Even then, they need plenty of ways to crawl their way back up in case they are unable to swim for some reason. You can find more information about mud turtles (or any other species) on the Turtle Forum. Here is the website: www.turtleforum.com/forum/upload/index.php?act=home

    • @ChuckMSH
      @ChuckMSH 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have started him with 8” of water in the deep end and 3” in the shallow. Once I am confident he can handle it I am going to increase the deep to 12-14” at the deepest part. Which will allow me to use the overflow and sump on this aquarium. I will be using your aquarium as inspiration with a sand filled box for a basking area as well and a couple shallow spots he can relax in. I am trying to avoid much for plastic so I am thinking of building the platforms out of Slate siliconed together with aquarium silicone. I just want to make sure that it does not have sharp edges.

    Hi Bob, thanks for the update, I know you answered this several times in the older video comments, but how are the scratches now after you've had it for a few years? As I watch Fern swim and claw the front window I still cant believe your tank looks so good. Have you had to polish the scratches often? or can you still say the turtles haven't scratched ? I wan to pull the trigger on a custom tank, but everyone says the turtles will scratch it, I have 3 small 3-5 inch mud and musk turtles and I would think your results would be the same as mine

    • @BauriBob
      @BauriBob  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Billy Idle I can't be sure but most of the scratches are my own doing from cleaning the tank. Either accidently rubbing something against the sides or else getting sand trapped in the cleaner pads I use to remove algae. In any case it is no big deal as far as I'm concerned. I don't know if a turtle can actually scratch acrylic that easily unless you have huge snapping turtles or something like that.

      in my immediate area numbers are way down. Traffic has increased over the years and I find more and more dead turtles on local roads. Used to rescue 7 or 8 hatchlings a year but now only 1 or 2. I often find dead female mud turtles in the middle of the road, eggs crushed.

      yes, I clean them the best I can. Rinse the plants many times over. I have some strange little water bugs living in the tank that came from the river but I don't worry about it. Mostly try to remove leeches (yep!), that sort of thing.

    I had a tank very similar to yours made two years ago now. Am wondering when you say you take yours apart and clean it, do you replace the sand? Also do you do anything to clean half of your bio-balls? Mine have turned kind of white and it says to take half of them out and clean them with vinegar. Have you had to do that? Thanks for your answers. My tank is 8' by 3' by 20". Setup quite similar to yours. My turtles are different though. I live in MN so I have painted turtles (2), a red-bellied sideneck and an albino red-eared slider. Have had them for 15 years now. They love the big tank.

      TurtleGrandma I haven't drained the tank in a couple years now. I am considering releasing my turtles into the wild soon, depending on how my one injured mud turtle comes through jaw surgery this Tuesday. But if I keep the turtles, I will be emptying the tank anyway because there are stress fractures where the tank is drilled for the plumbing. Not leaking, but needs to be repaired before it does develop a leak. If I do empty the tank, I may replace the sand, but simply rinsing it is also an option. You have to rinse new sand as well.

    Fantastic looking tank. How do you keep the above tank sand, moist for digging and burying eggs?

    • @BauriBob
      @BauriBob  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stuart Brewer no easy way to do that, just check the sand periodically and add some water. Moist but not sopping wet. Turtles will not be able to dig in dry sand and will pass sopping wet sand by since they want the eggs relatively dry.

    • @BauriBob
      @BauriBob  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used a wet/dry filter, the overflows remove surface water, not water near the bottom. A wet/dry filter does a pretty good job of keeping ammonia down but need frequent water changes (30% or so) to keep the water clean. Couple times a year I did a major cleaning - huge job. Two 600 GPH pumps moved a lot of water which helps.

    Hi there, Stunning aquarium! I have a RES turtle in a 40 gallon breeder tank. Just yesterday I added ghost shrimp to his tank for the first time ever. He loved hunting them and he quickly gobbled them up. I'm going to be upgrading him to a 125 gallon tank and I want to have sand, live plants, driftwood, Cory cats, ghost shrimp, etc...QUESTION:
    I'm wondering, how did you maintain/clean the sand in that tank? I've had sand in aquariums before but I felt like I could never really clean the debris in the sand. It seemed like trying to suck it up would sometimes push the debris further into the sand where uneaten food/fish waste would stay there forever, potentially harming the fish. And did you have to agitate the sand every so often in order to prevent gas build-up? Thanks so much -Sam

    • @BauriBob
      @BauriBob  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the main thing I had was a wet/dry sump filter. That kept the water well oxygenated and as organics decayed, they were quickly resolved, ammonia to nitrites and finally to nitrates. Frequent partial (not full) water changes kept the nitrates under control. I left the sand alone until I major cleaning every 6 months or so. Then I emptied the tank, thorough rinsed the sand, etc. took all day. Usually debris tends to collect on the surface of the sand where you can siphon it up. Filters won't do much good for large pieces of debris. Be careful about leaving food in the tank that is uneaten in a reasonable amount of time.

    How long does it take you to clean this tank, and do you have a video with all of your tank details and upkeep? Talking about how you set up and build the tank design and it's stand?

    • @BauriBob
      @BauriBob  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Twichl The tank and stand were custom built. I didn't design them except for the dimensions. Because of the huge filtration system, mostly just did 50% water changes weekly, cleaning the acrylic sides to remove algae growth. But inorganic debris does eventually build up in the sand and a full tank water change is necessary - that takes two days. The 50% water changes didn't take more than an hour using garden hoses hooked up outside. My house water is filtered so there is no chlorine. There is some work involved, you have to be dedicated. And remember, turtles live a long time, 40 or more years. I have some videos up on tank maintenance but I'd have to go hunting for them. Browse through my videos, you should be able to find a couple on maintenance.

However I don't have enough space for such a habitat, and I was wondering as they are getting larger could you give me some advice on what kind of tank size I should be looking into as they are getting bigger and bigger by the day!

      Sachi Perera I plan on releasing my three mud turtles back into the wild this weekend. Any future videos will be of rescues only.
      In my opinion, there is no tank large enough, so you have to compromise. Turtles are natural roamers and like space. Space can be a big issue when you have multiple turtles as aggression can always start up. There is no such thing as a tank that is too big.

  • @santosleeli
    @santosleeli 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    +Bauribob, very inspiring. Question: what is your experience re: musk vs. mud turtles? Is one more aggressive than the other? Am thinking of getting a turtle to put in a tank with cories, but am worried the turtle may eat the cories (I did notice your muds do not?). Thanks and hope all is well with you.

    • @BauriBob
      @BauriBob  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Santos Lee I have lost Cory catfish to my mud and musk turtles before. The catfish are often careless around the turtles and try to eat the same food. The turtles nip them in the process. Once injured, the catfish are easy pickings and the turtles will kill and eat them. So if you mix the two, there will likely be casualties. I mostly kept mud turtles. Musks are better swimmers and are more likely to catch a swimming fish than a mud. Mud and musk turtles like sand substrate and places to hide. They don't like a brightly lit tank so try to provide some shade for them away from the basking lamps. They like caves, etc.

    • @santosleeli
      @santosleeli 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +BauriBob Thanks for your reply. I've set up a 72 gallon tank with silica sand substrate. I still have to find a good basking set up and heat/UV lamp combo that would work with my tank (it's a bowfront with an overflow). From my research, I understand muds tend to bask more than musks. Any other behavioural differences that you've observed? Btw, also read somewhere that with female turtles, there could be a risk of egg binding. Have you experienced that and how would you prevent that? Thanks again in advance for all your help.

    Oh, one more question, how many years did it take to get your tank that clear? I've been running mine for two years now, and it still kind of looks like river water from the mopani wood. Am hopeful to get as clear as your. I empty it 3/4 every month and empty the wet-dry filter every Wed. and Sun when I change the filters. Thanks for your help!

    • @BauriBob
      @BauriBob  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      TurtleGrandma I don't recall exactly, but it took a long time. Two years seems a bit long though, I don't think my tank took that long. I do remember soaking the Mopani for weeks in a bucket, emptying and refilling it daily before adding to the tank. But two years is too long. Perhaps there is something up with that Mopani wood, not in a toxic way necessarily, but something doesn't see quite right about it taking that long. Are you sure it is the Mopani wood?

    hi bob wasup, I know ure done with this aquarium n these bauri group, btw want to ask u cos Im a little bit worried, I have eastern mud turtle, N I hav large sand box too as u suggest for mud&musk, particularly hav 2 female easternmud, still baby/ juvenile maybe (2.5 inch), then theyre bask like crazy, I live in Indonesia which is tropical country and the temp is always 29-32, then I realized the different between musk n mud is absolutely bask behaviour, suddenly 1 of my mud was gone, then I realized she burried herself in land area, I dont know if this thing called aestivate ? or just burrying for fun ? the thing that Im worried is how long she stay burried in that sand ? Im worriedif she stay in that condition, ants,bug, or any insects will bite her n she died in period of aestivate ?

    • @BauriBob
      @BauriBob  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Firman Rahmadi not sure why she is burying herself, typical behavior when the temperature is cold. Mud and Musk turtles do not like bright lights. Are your lights too bright? Also, be sure the heat lamp is not too close to the basking area or it will get too warm. If the turtles do not have sufficient places to hide in the tank, they may bury themselves. Mud and musk turtles tend to be shy. So you need lots of vegetation for them to climb on and hide in. I was wondering, how much evaporation do you deal with on a daily/weekly basis, and does it affect the humidity significantly in that room? I also live in Florida where the humidity is naturally pretty high.

    • @BauriBob
      @BauriBob  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have a sump filter so evaporation effects the water level in the sump rather than the tank, which is nice. I also have a 20 gallon tank sitting next to the sump with a small pump in that tank. An automatic top-off device (ATO) is in the sump and automatically turns on the pump when the level drops below a certain amount. That 20 gallon tank will last me a least 10 days or so though I top it off every week along with my water changes. And yes, the tank increases humidity in the house. The tank is large, 24 square feet in area, so a lot of water evaporates. Without the ATO I would have to be topping off the sump every day. If you don't have a sump filter, then the tank water level itself will drop each day. You can run an ATO device directly into your tank just as easily. Just need some space to place the reservoir.

      Carl Dowd mud are less likely to go after fish but they will if they are hungry enough. Sliders naturally eat fish in the wild and there is no way to stop them. Any fish that share a tank with red-eared sliders could be eaten.

    • @BauriBob
      @BauriBob  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Patiki Gaming We rescued Muddy as a hatchling off he street. We fed her well and she grew fast. The trouble with her shell stared when she developed eggs for the first time. She may have been a bit young for that, don't know, but her shell deformed at that point. She was laying eggs almost every month. She had an enormous appetite, constantly stealing food from the other turtles. I should have taken more drastic measures but I failed to do so. Nonetheless, she seemed otherwise healthy. She is in the wild now, so she'll most certainly lose some weight. Unfortunately her shell will always be a bit deformed.
