- Tasmanian Blackwood "Acacia melanoxylon" comes from New Zealand, Australia, and Tasmania. Watch as we take this beautiful exotic log and turn it into awesome wood for woodworking projects! This high class wood is worthy of many uses from woodturning to custom furniture and anything in between. It is very similar to Hawaiian Koa in color, density, and acoustic properties. Must be a relaxed work environment if you can spend that much of your working day looking for your coffee thermos. I envy you. You get great toys to play with and an absorbing, interesting, job. Nice to see a man happy in his work.

Chris, The milling equipment you have is absolutely amazing, like some otherworldly transformer with arms and legs. I can only imagine the maintenance involved in keeping all of this stuff running. I grumble and cuss when I have to change the knives on my jointer with a full tank of coffee in my gullet. Great video and beautiful wood that lives on to see another day!

I have a 2009 Taylor 414ce Limited With Tasmanian Blackwood back and sides and a Sitka Spruce top. It also has Curly Maple binding on the body and neck. It has a beautiful mellow tone and other guitar players have been very complimentary on the looks and the tone. Tasmanian Blackwood is kind of a secret wood in the guitar world. I think Bob Taylor was the first major guitar builder other than Maton in Australia to really produce a good sized run of Tas Black guitars.

I think you need to tie your camo coffee thermos to your person in the future. Very entertaining and fun to watch you track down your coffee. G'day Chris, I just stumbled on your channel, as a boutique mill operator in Oz I've processed a few Blackwood logs and have only ever looked at it as furniture grade but I've been wanting to know more about grading it and other possible species for musical instruments for obvious reasons. Thanks for explaining what luthiers are looking for and I will be checking out more of your vids 👍.

Beautiful work. If you are making guitar sets with a heavily spiraled log, shouldn’t the log be sectioned and split into quarter oriented sections?

Our business harvests quite a bit of this stuff on contract during the summer months each year. It is a beautiful timber but takes some work to get as it grows predominately in really wet swampy areas... I was just visiting one of our active sites yesterday and they had some magic timber stockpiled ready to go. Unfortunately, some of the shady locals also like the timber and we have a bit of it stollen from time to time! anyway... it'd be interesting to see how such a beautiful log has ended up so far from home!

Watch the saw dust from that species. It's a beautiful timber but the saw dust is no great for the respiratory system. Pays to mask up

Definitely takes a while. We posted some of this to our site a few months back and most of it has sold. It's a very popular wood, but more will be coming in the future!
Theres more than a 180degree twist over the length, this was never acoustic 😮, Nice setup though
It's a gnarly looking timber when you see it growing in the swamps where it is predominately found in the wild!
