  • Tasmanian Blackwood "Acacia melanoxylon" comes from New Zealand, Australia, and Tasmania. Watch as we take this beautiful exotic log and turn it into awesome wood for woodworking projects! This high class wood is worthy of many uses from woodturning to custom furniture and anything in between. It is very similar to Hawaiian Koa in color, density, and acoustic properties. The iridescent shimmer in this species is ridiculously beautiful. Chatoyant figure is often present in quarter sawn wood. Learn more interesting facts from owner, Chris Cook as you watch!
You can check out the stock we have for sale at www.cookwoods.com

Chris and his coffee is a recurring theme now and then. It's a great way to keep the video fun and family oriented. Also, there's no better way to watch big logs getting milled than to the tune of some epic Zimmer-esque music.

Justin, thanks for watching! For sure, Chris is never far from his coffee. That's a regular occurrence every day around here. :) Glad you enjoyed the music. We sure appreciate you taking the time to comment.

Must be a relaxed work environment if you can spend that much of your working day looking for your coffee thermos. I envy you. You get great toys to play with and an absorbing, interesting, job. Nice to see a man happy in his work.

Thanks, Chris. I love to see Slab Zilla work. I have a tremendous respect for the power of the machinery and the size and danger of the logs. There is something special in opening up a log and seeing the beauty of the wood inside.

Chris, The milling equipment you have is absolutely amazing, like some otherworldly transformer with arms and legs. I can only imagine the maintenance involved in keeping all of this stuff running. I grumble and cuss when I have to change the knives on my jointer with a full tank of coffee in my gullet. Great video and beautiful wood that lives on to see another day!

I have a 2009 Taylor 414ce Limited With Tasmanian Blackwood back and sides and a Sitka Spruce top. It also has Curly Maple binding on the body and neck. It has a beautiful mellow tone and other guitar players have been very complimentary on the looks and the tone. Tasmanian Blackwood is kind of a secret wood in the guitar world. I think Bob Taylor was the first major guitar builder other than Maton in Australia to really produce a good sized run of Tas Black guitars.

Chris, thanks so much for this great video and the excellent narration. You have a fabulous setup, and I enjoyed the slabbing and milling. I think you need to tie your camo coffee thermos to your person in the future. Very entertaining and fun to watch you track down your coffee. Again, I really enjoyed the video and since I just subscriber I'm sure to see more in the future, Great job.

G'day Chris, I just stumbled on your channel, as a boutique mill operator in Oz I've processed a few Blackwood logs and have only ever looked at it as furniture grade but I've been wanting to know more about grading it and other possible species for musical instruments for obvious reasons. Thanks for explaining what luthiers are looking for and I will be checking out more of your vids 👍.

great video! Love the machinery (big toys) and beautiful wood/education. About the coffee: why not one of those backpacks with a bladder?
no losing it if it's opn your back. Transfer from bladder to bladder.

Beautiful work. If you are making guitar sets with a heavily spiraled log, shouldn’t the log be sectioned and split into quarter oriented sections?

Our business harvests quite a bit of this stuff on contract during the summer months each year. It is a beautiful timber but takes some work to get as it grows predominately in really wet swampy areas... I was just visiting one of our active sites yesterday and they had some magic timber stockpiled ready to go. Unfortunately, some of the shady locals also like the timber and we have a bit of it stollen from time to time! anyway... it'd be interesting to see how such a beautiful log has ended up so far from home!

Hi Chris Wonderful video. Really enjoyed seeing the process. I have a stand of blackwoods (in New Zealand) which I am thinking of milling. Where is the best place to find more information please. Also how long does it take in the vacuum kiln, and is there much warp? Thank you. Have a great day 😊

Hi there! Thank you so much for reaching out to us. I think since you are in New Zealand, that contacting a local sawmill or a portable sawmill there would be the best way to go. Are you thinking of selling the wood to us?

What's with this ""TURKEY" , who cares about the thermo, he is supposed to be cutting timber, that is what we want to see, not him chasing his coffee all about machinery.
