Spot on with your recommendation about greasing fittings. Pump it in until it starts to ooze out, so it takes any dirt with it and prolongs the life of the part.

What delightful slabs Nathan. I am sure these will sell for a very tidy price that won't do your 'pocket' any harm. One could turn some brilliant large party platters out of just one of these slabs, let alone table/desk tops etc. Cheers mate, Don from South Australia.

When I was just a kid there was a small saw setup down the road that ran on water power . It was at the bottom of the falls of the reservoir that bordered my family's property. I used to spend hours watching them slab very large and very old trees of all types. They had a circular blade set up and took very good care not to use suspect logs.

One thing to remember when using that grease gun. If there's the least bit of resistance that awesome gun can build up some awesome pressure. I use them when lubricating the landing gear on the aircraft I maintain and always wear safety glasses. One misdirected high pressure squirt could make for a really bad day.

Excuse me, but I'm foot-stomping irate--why don't any of you--Mark and Eddie, John at fricknjeep, and too many others to name--show us what the inside of a hollow log looks like? I'm sure that not your entire audience is intimately familiar with trees and logs. Some of us are from a part of the country--the Sandhills of Nebraska--where there are still people alive (although alas not many) who recall having to burn buffalo chips for fuel. But all you guys quit sawing just before you get to the hole. How about just once, when sawing a hollow log, filming it so we can see what the inside looks like. Cordially yours, Fred G.

    • @gladebrosi6587

Oof, I can't imagine how heavy that slab was. But thank goodness it _was_ so wet, those spalting fungi needed the moisture to do their work. Here's hoping you don't get any cracks or distortions around that knot and figure as it dries; that would make a gorgeous central focal point for whatever this turns into.

  • @chrisflavelle1200

Thanks for another informative, entertaining video. The maple slab was beyond beautiful and will make a fabulous addition to someone's home or office. Live-edge slabs have been a continuing design element for many projects and since you deal with maple, walnut and other heavy hardwoods, I couldn't help but notice how you grunted when you were moving that slab off the saw mill. We're not getting any younger (I really don't mean to be critical, just concerned), so I was wondering if you've considered incorporating some sort of slab moving "helpers" into the design of the next saw mill building? Thanks.

Back in college in the summer of '74 we dropped a mature rock maple up in northern Wisconsin and our lone chain saw, a McCullough 10 got stuck in a branch that split pinning it in the limb. Trying to get it loose I chipped the blade on my 2 yr old Buck 110 lock blade. That wood is no joke! Don't cry, we burned that tree in the fireplace!
