    Two life lessons so far I have learned by watching video, the destination is not the destination, but the journey is the destination. Stop once and a while and enjoy it. The second is if there is something about the journey you are excited about and something about the journey your not excited about, go anyway and think about the part you are excited about. Thanks

    Andrew, I was born & raised in Arizona. Growing up my parents took me many times thru the years to visit the Grand Canyon. To me it was like looking at a beautiful painting, but in those days I had no real appreciation for it. It wasn't until my late 20's that I was able to spend 3 days hiking to the bottom & back. In my opinion, only then can you truly experience the Grand Canyon. Instead of being a casual observer looking down from the rim you start to become a part of the Canyon as you slowly walk into its depths. Then you can take in the sounds & smells of the pines, cedars, desert plants, streams & the Colorado River. You will also cross paths with the many varied species of animals & vegetation that inhabit this massive canyon. I've shared my campsites with deer, a wild turkey, ring-tailed cats & had a Big Horn Sheep ram parallel me for over a mile just checking me out. Looking up at the lights along the rim at night also provides a totally different perspective. I have hiked down into the Canyon 7 times over the years & it rivals all the other places I have experienced during my 71 yrs. on this earth. Andrew, if you ever come to the Grand Canyon again, take at least a mile hike down one of the trails & I guarantee you'll have a renewed appreciation for it.

      Gosh, yes. I was raised in Venezuela. Dad was with Shell in the Cardón refinery. We would go camping in the monte (bush) with other families.
      Then many birdwatching trips with SCAV (Sociedad Conservacionista Audubón de Venezuela) to different hatos (ranches) and island camping to Morrocoy etc. Even returned specially for trips after I left in 1979. Am so enjoying Andrew’s videos. I don’t do overlanding but do camp in my 4Runner and tents.

    In all these months of Covid lockdown, first thing in the morning while still in bed, is to scan TH-cam on all the 4X4 camping trips in 'nowhere else like it on Earth, South Africa'. The opening scenes camera work, drew me in like no other filming has ever done and is without shadow of doubt, the finest I have ever seen, simply breathtakingly awesome! What a perfect time of the year to go to Namibia, as it draws back it's arid, but, majestic desert cover, to reveal natures infinite wonderous beauty, though, a map would have been helpful for viewers, then, oh dear came the complaints, nearly lost me at that point, feeling your diet of meat and dairy consumption had something to do with that. But, soon forgotten on a dark, freezing cold Scottish morn, as I delve back into the magnificence of my childhood home, with grateful and memorable thanks, 'on the edge of eternity'. XXX

    I agree with the smell part. We were driving through the masai mara in kenya and the soil was very dry. Then it started to rain and the soil gave off this smell that felt like it was healing our souls.

I love your shots laying in your belly contemplating the cliffs. Just imagine those shots in Instagram and criticize by the narcissists that are risking their lives to having a "cool shot" We the "old ones" are here now for not doing stupid acts. Thank you for sharing an awesome film.

    Missed out on the Fish River Canyon on both trips to Namibia - just not enough time!. The Grande Canyon is awesome - as you mentioned an early start and walk the south rim (take all day) is unique as the colors, shadows and critters change throughout the day. The north rim is quieter and just as great. The geological history along the walk is of interest. At one point being over a mile above the river with Condors flying about. Both are marvels of time!

  • @joliettraveler
    @joliettraveler 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you go again to the Grand Canyon you should take the mule ride to the bottom and stay at the Phantom Ranch. Then you experience the real canyon. Also visit the north rim to get away from the crowds. Fantastic views from that side. You are about 1,000 feet higher than the south rim.

    When you come to America again, you should visit the Channeled Scablands in Washington and Oregon's John Day area- there's a lot less traffic and it's just as beautiful as the grand canyon. You won't see graffiti on everything and you'll find a lot more dirt roads to explore. It's far less commercialized.
