Giving our Tortoise's a bath. Cleaning your Horsefield Tortoises.

- Your Tortoises will appreciate the occasional bathe. I do so once a month in the summer & less in the winter if I don't hibernate them. Named by my daughter, these two are Horsefield Tortoise's called 'Taco' & 'Tortilla' that we took in at the beginning of summer. I recommend that you do not hibernate tortoises for their first year of ownership so you can monitor their diet & health.
I keep them in outside enclosures which is the best thing for them due to natural UV light but ensure they have a shaded area as their house can become hot in direct sunlight.
When the outside temperature starts to fall below 15c at night I move them into inside enclosures.
Please remember that some Tortoises dont like to live with other, males especially so please check your specie. I always keep them solitary to save accidents or incidents.

Thank you so much for sharing your video. My tortoise went missing for five months this was his hibernation time ( I had thought someone had taken him his 65 years old) . My family and I searched both back gardens completely but no luck , I really thought someone had taken him . Absolutely brilliant news this morning I opened the back door to let my dog winnie out and there was my beloved tortoise Cesal lots of mud too . Wanting to wash him I had no idea until I went on TH-cam and found your video. Cesal hasn't properly woken up yet but I did try washing his face with Luke warm water but he kept hiding in his shell. I am so happy to have my boy back all the crying about him missing and wondering what had happened to him then to wake up this morning to find him is the best feeling ever. Hi Denise, Aw someone had an adventure! So happy you still have him & he's well. A friends tort went missing a few years back & suddenly reappeared a bit grubby a year later! 😁 I'm glad the video was helpful & best wishes to you all. Stay safe. ~Kris

Hiya @@nathanielnorris2653, that depends, if they don't get dirty then hardly ever, I just Bath mine when they get a little muddy or I think they may need to take on more fluids. 👍🏻

I have found that after bathing my Horsefield Tortoise that if I put him on folding table with a beach towel, that he drys off well, and its a great time to bond. Soon as we are done playing and hes worn out I put him away and he runs for a hide box lol.

I loved this all I have been doing is soaking him in water and scrubbing his top shell I did not know my tortoise needed all of this
I only have one tortoise because I feel if I have 2 I will accidentally pay attention to one tortoise mostly and he will die early of stress and I don’t want any tortoise or animal to die of anything but old age
My tortoise is currently 5 now his name is AJ and this will help a bunch

I have two female tortoises. We have given them different names - Kuna & Kuni. The smaller one (in size) isn't very active and occasionally falls sick. The bigger one is quite active and roams all around our house. However, unlike the others here, I put them daily in luke warm water that helps them to poop. They both are lovely creatures.
A year back, the smaller one was quite uneasy and the vet said that she has an ingrowing tooth that needed to be trimmed. Wow...what a struggle she put out until the anesthesia took effect. When I brought her home, the bigger one was hovering around her taking care !!

I would get a.girl if I were you I have a boy called squirt. I love him dearly but he bites and trys to mate with my feet all the time. He lives indoors and will not be penned in at all. They do make lovely pets though. I recommend kamp Kenan channel for advice on housing and diet. Best wishes Liz and squirt x

Thanks Kileigh Ann. The pooping in the bath happens with snakes & lizards too. 😊 It's not stress but it's like the warm water loosens them up. 😅
Being in water for tortoises actually relieves them from the pull of gravity and their heavy shells, plus the warm water regulates their temperature and assists them on eliminating much more easily than on ground.

Thanks ypu the k was nice video. Please pray I find my Mrs tort as she's escaped out of her outdoor encloser on a bright sunny day. We live in Scotland UK she is 6 and mr tort is missing her. We back onto woods and fields and its like looking for a needle in a haystack. She's been gone 6 weeks in heartbroken 😔

So when you wash the tortoise shell you will not destroy and when you put them in side the water.?
Hi Carol, they're only in a little water for a very short amount of time then dried. Its when theyre in wet conditions for a bit longer that they can get shell rot etc.

I don't use tap water here in the uk unless it's left to stand for a cpl of days but it won't harm your tort. 😊

Hi Jack, so cool, your son will love it. My advice would be do lots of research on food (www.thetortoisetable.org.uk/), if your countrys temperature allows it try to keep it in an outside enclosure as it's best for them (unless too cold of course) & lastly just read lots & keep a diary/record book to log measurements, calcium & vitamins intake etc. 😊

They are very lovely. I have two Greek tortoises, considering the very high temperature in my country, is it okay to soak them every day? and clean them up like this once a month? also, is it okay to soak them in worm water in summer?
I wouldn't soak them daily as a bath should only really be for giving them a clean as they don't bathe in the wild. I also give mine a bath when they wake up from hibernation but it's not something they actively like to do. 👍🏻
