Can I Use Regular Toilet Paper in My RV?

  • In this TH-cam video, we decided to test rv toilet paper vs regular toilet paper to see which dissolved best in water and also RV toilet chemical. The results were surprising!
The rv safe toilet paper ( both 1 ply and 2 ply toilet paper) dissolved well as you would expect. But the residential regular toilet paper also dissolved pretty well. We tested regular toilet paper from Walmart and also Angle soft toilet paper.
We would say the results were pretty surprising because even though we ran the best RV toilet paper and treatment test we could all the results were pretty similar.
Our advice is that if you are a full time RVer or you go RV camping very frequently you could probably get away with using regular residential toilet paper in your camper. But, if you camp infrequently, we recommend only using RV safe toilet paper in your camping trailer or RV so the toilet paper doesn't clump and clog your black tank.

I would say the most important thing to remember is to never let your black tank run dry. I always fill my tank with about 8 gallons of clean water immediately after draining the tank. This will ensure that any left over toilet paper is submerged and won't have a chance to harden on the tank or the sensor. I am a full time RV-er and I use 1 ply residential toilet paper along with a couple tablets in the holding tank. So far I have never once had an issue. Thanks for the great video.

Inspired by this video, I did my own test of RV safe tp vs. Scott's 1000 sheet tp. Scott's did great, much better than the thicker RV safe paper. Scott's is what we use at our house, so that is what we'll use when we camp now. Just because it says RV safe doesn't mean it breaks down all that well in reality. Thanks for this video!

So the RV & Marine TP, uh, wiped out the competition (at least for us short-term users). :-) Thanks again for the info! We are gearing up for our maiden voyage, albeit a short one, to a local camp so that my 91-year old dad can get a taste of RV life for a day or so before we start our move to Tennessee from KKKalifornia. We bought the RV primarily for his comfort during our move but we also love camping so we'll love having the RV for that as well!!

Just a thought: having traveled through SE Asia, I noticed that the Vietnamese use a little squirt gun (just like the kitchen sink sprayers in the US) that's attached to the wall near the toilet (kind of a manual bidet, from the French). So when you're finished with number 2 (and also number 1 for the ladies), you give yourself a good squirt while still sitting, then use a probably very generic 2 ply, couple of squares, toilet paper and get yourself dry and then discard the paper in a waste basket. (no smell) This takes a couple of tries for you to be experienced and is also hygienic. I will adapt one when I get back on the road. Also also, love your content and stay safe out there.

Septic safe isn't the same as RV safe so I don't think that's correct. Septic systems have a holding tank and a big truck pumps the waste out of the tank. Not at all what happens when RVing.
      Hope that all makes sense...

We just had a zip lock bag in a trash can with a lid, and got rid of it every day, we had a very bad experience with having to clean out a poop cycle ,
So that will sure smarten ya right up , 🤣 so therefore we used a plastic zip bag, got along great that way ,

We use regular Scott's 1000 1ply in our RV and Boat and have for many year's and haven't had any issue's.
We use to buy Happy Camper which is not allowed in California any longer. So we now use Odorless on occasions of lots of use for longer periods of time along with a scoop of Arm & Hammer with Oxyclean Powder detergent that you Must mix with water to fully dissolve then flush. This detergent helps Alot with odor even without the Odorless product and is what we have found in the past year in both RV and Boat works just Fine by it self for less money and fights toilet holding tank odor!

We have changed how we do things since we made this video a few years ago...we use whatever TP we want, we use Matt's Liquified, and we use a lot of water. All of this worked great and we got grades of A and A- on our 2 tanks when we had Klean Tank clean them out for us.

So I live in a rural area with a lot of boondocking and almost never a RV Dump near by. I usually have to haul home my black tank and dump at a local gas station with a dump. I grew up boating with black tank toilets and most had a grinder assisted flush. Our family’s rule was always, no toilet paper in the toilet - period! We always had a little trash can with liner and a lid that we used instead. Surprisingly, there was never an odor problem with that method.

I would have liked to see how Scott toilet paper would have reacted since it's advertised as septic tank safe.

      Hey Roanna,
We used 2 RV specific tp's, I can't imagine Scott TP would be any better than the ones we tested, but if we do another experiment we'll be sure to try that!

@@RVBlogger I conducted an experiment of my own, inspired by your tests, and found that Scott's 1000 sheet tp did great against the RV safe tp that we had! In 24 hours, Scott's really broke down well, while the RV safe tp did not. When you compare the thickness of the two sheets, it's easy to see why Scott breaks down well: it is much thinner paper. Thanks for the video and the info.

I think there is a misconception among RV’ers regarding the purpose of adding chemicals to the black tank, it assists as a deodorizer and to break down human waste not cellulose from trees. Thanks for your attempt to replicate real conditions. I have watched many of these the last week. Seems odd everyone choosing the same topics for content at a close interval. Thanks for your investment and time.

      Hi Bob,
It is a weird coincidence that several videos about this came out in the same week. We see people asking about it all the time on our Facebook Group and maybe others had similar questions popping up in their communities too. There are lots of newbies out there.

We just bought some chemical called Unique. We will have to try this experiment because Todd from NRVTA did a video of using it and it turned dog food into liquid.

      Hi Kathy,
We think so too but this is right off of their website:
"LIQUIFY: Waste solids & most ordinary household tissue ( no expensive special tissue needed )" so they claim it can break down the TP...

My wife and I went to Thailand a few years ago and for the most part, they don't use toilet paper. In fact, you rarely found a toilet to sit on. They have what are called "Squatty Potties." Toilets and toilet paper are a luxury over there and so we had to learn how to do it the "Thai" way. And medically speaking, it's MUCH better for you to squat than to sit on a seat. When you squat, your interior plumbing lines up properly to purge. When you sit on a seat, you squeeze your gut tissue/muscle until you force things out.
In any event, there was normally a bucket of water next to the toilet and there was a cup in the bucket. You just poured the water down your back side and you use your left hand (in Thailand, you use your left hand) to clean yourself. Pour some water in the bowl to help the flush. Go wash your hands with soap. All done. No need to fret over "RV safe TP."
Granted, we are SPOILED and WUSSES in our Western culture and this Thai method is not for everyone but it IS an option that billions of people do every day because they don't have the luxuries that we have. If you've had kids, then you've had lots of things on your hands and so it won't kill you to clean yourself with your hand and water and then wash with soap.

    • @RVBlogger

      Hi Kathy,
Good thought but I don't think anyone will do that unless there are no sewer hook ups at the individual campsites but there is a dump station. Even then it's not a long drive.

Regular 4 ply TP works best in our RV and has since the beginning. The reason is simple; WE DON'T Flush the paper down. That is what doggie bags are fore!!

Hi Kathy, Steve, and Trooper Blanck,
Apparently there are a lot of people who don't flush TP...we definitely prefer to flush it and we use RV safe TP to avoid any problems. Plus we flush out tank regularly to help maintain it.
