We installed a Natures Head compost toilet four years ago and live in our rv full time. This has alleviated all the septic issues including gate valves, chemicals, waiting in lines, clogs, broken fittings & hoses & smells. Works for us!
The recipe mixture is 48 ounces (40 oz pine-sol and 8 oz Calgon pearls and some water. Then you have a large batch. Just use 6-8 oz each dump. More with hot weather.
I have been using the Calgon Pine-Sol mixture since your first video. It has been working great for us! My tank sensors have never worked better. Thank you for the information!!
@@brianshackett5753 For tanks that are 40 gallons or less, use 1/2 cup (four ounces) of the pre-mixed tank solution. For tanks over 40 gallons, use one cupe (8 ounces) per tank. In hot and humid weather, you can double the amount added. Always follow the tank solution with some water (one to three gallons) so that it gets thoroughly down in your tanks (both black and gray). Great question!
Yes I do use the mixture because it leaves a thin coat of very slippery agent & when I open the black tank everything goes & use the side wall water hose for 4 minutes and clean... Yes I'm a rookie at this camper stuff.. he's right on. Thank you for reading
We use one of the natural enzyme products - no clogs, no odors, and no issues. The secret to avoiding sludge is the golden black tank rule: lots and lots of water and flush your black tanks multiple times when dumping. Kleen Tanks "exclusive" jetter is not exclusive and they are not the only cleaners around. I am an independent tank cleaner and have a 1500 psi jetter, the same high pressure hose, and jetter heads.
@@karencupp439Hi , I'd like to start offering this service to my customers and would like to know where to purchase the jetter system you use. Thanks! I can't find much information regarding a good jetter system for this application.
I am happy to report I followed this guys suggestions. No chemicals in our tank for the past few months. No bad orders from out tank. I do the flush at our last stop before we get back home until the tank is clean. After 3 months in the storage in including 100 degree days over the past few weeks we still didn't have any odors. It is so nice not to mess with those chemicals now. Thanks for the video on this Tom!
Good information. I've been using the Calgon Pine sol treatment for two camping seasons now in both black and gray tank. No clogs, no smells and my sensors work. I use the lemon scented variety. I fill and flush my black tank multiple times and store it with some water and treatment in the tanks between camping trips. On a recent camping trip our neighbor had KleenTank come and clean there tanks. Fun to watch the procedure. Thanks for the video.
That's very interesting. I started working for the then Calgon company in 1976. It started as a small plant (no longer there) in Rockwood Michigan. We made the Calgon for the washer and bath products. Other products were add like cling free drier sheets and Lime Away. It was a good place to work. 😃
PDC Brands, which owns the Calgon brand now, provides the Calgon Bath Pearls (the recommended product) and other Calgon bath products currently. They contract with a manufacturer in China to produce the products.
When we first saw Jim on your channel we had been having a stink issue, we immediately stopped wasting our money on tank treatments. Started using Kleen Tank's recipe and things improved immensely! Now we use straight calgon as our "tank treatment" and it has been a game changer! So thankful you guys continue to make videos like this. 😊❤
Key is to add plenty of water with your #2 business. We add 2 bags of ice before we leave for our vacation to our prior water and cleaner that we added after our dump/flush. The ics is solid at first and moves around and kinda beats inside the tank to break loose anything that happened to been left behind on the last flush. Never any stink.
Having a nice smooth runner for your septic hose is nice. The best performing and cheapest way to do this is by picking up an aluminum gutter. This will fit nicely in your rear RV bumper in sections and when you put them together makes for a long, ridged, runner that also keeps your gutter secure.
Other than plain water in the empty black tank before use, we add nothing to either tank. We have had zero smells. I’ll always dump the black tank first and use the built in tank sprayed/flush at the end of a trip and then bump the gray tank. I’ve been doing this for many years with zero issues.
The best way to keep down black tank odor is to keep 2-3 inches of water in the bowl after each flush. Periodically I rinse the black tank with an rv water wand until clean water comes out. We use pinesol and will now try calgon.
A great solution! Remember, our tank solution is a good start, but there's no substitute to a professional cleaning first -- and then using plenty of water and, if desired, our tank solution.
My question is how often should I dump the tanks. We are on a seasonal site. We do not have FHU. I have to haul the blue tote to the dump every time its full. Can I wait to they are full which could take a few weeks or should I empty them into the blue tote and start with a fresh 2 - 3 gallons of water. Also, how often should I use my internal jet cleaner. Every time I dump or can I go a few dumps before rinsing.
I have a 2006 Fleetwood bounder, and for 18 years never had an issue with either the Black or Gray tank, just rinse them out every few weeks and they stay clean, no extra money, or special chemical's.
And not to mention that it is extremely caustic. It can be used -- in a temporary and fast situation -- to sanitize your freshwater tank, but take the necessary precautions to flush it completely out of your RV's plumbing and holding system.
Thanks for the great info! I’ll be picking up a “fresh from the factory” new RV soon. It has 40gal grey/35 black tanks. How much water should I start out with in each. I’ll be doing a lot of 2 week boondocking so available volume is important to me. Grateful for the education!
for years, have just used some dishwasher detergent to keep things clean and flowing. But over the last few years have used a packet of yeast every two or three dumps. on our 14th year, things are flowing easily from our tanks. And of course, lots and lots of water.
Thank You for sharing....We are new to Rving and appreciate any help in any way ....and will implement the processes to help keep Our tanks in Good working order...Thank You Once again for this Valuable information...😊
I use 1/2 cup of borax and dawn each and I dissolve that in a bucket of warm water and I dump that down the RV toilet with plenty of water. No smells and it keeps the black tank liquified. You don't need a lot of borax, just a little. It's called the bio-geo method.
Awesome video! Although we never drink from our freshwater holding tank, what is acceptable to use to sanitize the tank? We do clean the black/grey tanks using Jim's mixture. Cheers!
Kleentank cleaned our tanks in Shipshewana, IN when we were there for a rally and one of the tank sensors didn't work properly after the cleaning. I contacted the dealer, she was going to have one of their guys come take a look at it but the guy never showed up. I texted her a couple of times after that but never got a response. I'm sold this process works well but disappointed with the follow-through after the sale.
Bleach produces gas. I learned this horrible lesson years ago. When I opened the flush valve on a porta-Pottey. It launched the contents of the bowl all over the place.
I love this guy, Mr. Kleen. Both of you good sirs, are doing a great justice in the world! haha I am tempted to have a Kleen associate come out and meet me at one of my next Oregon Campsites. My trailer is a 2022 coleman light 1805RB with a 28 gal black. around June of 2023 we started getting an odor in the trailer after I dumped the tanks. It would stick around for a while even after adding back in a few gallons and treatments. Just before our last trip in October of 23, I made up a batch of Kleen juice (learned about through this channel!) and added that to my tanks after dumping them.....Before our first trip of 2024 ill probably add more juice along with 10 gals of additional water, then dump once we get to site and hook up. I am really hoping to get a handle on that dank stank.
Hello First thank you for these videos on black tanks I have 2 questions: 1) I am not a us resident, Where can I buy the pipe and fitting you using with your wather pressure machine? 2) We are 2 adults and we can barely go over 3 days with our 30g black thank. You reports family going 2-3 weeks. Do we use too much water. Thank you Allen
I use normal TP. Have been for years. I flush the black tank with the elbow sprayer every time. I leave the tank half full afterward. Only have trouble in the winter if it's super cold. NE Oregon.
Kleenexes Tank is a good service, but the digesters info isn't real that great. If you flush well after each trip and dump 10ls of ice and a cup of Borax when traveling to your camp ground, your black tank will work well. Also if possible add a cup of Dawn dish soap to your grey tanks, and fill them with hot water, let them sit over night of possible, and drain and flush, and your never need a service like Kleen Tank
This is basically a variation of the Geo Method for maintaining RV tanks without the occasional use of bleach. The reasons for not using bleach seem sound. I'm curious why the use of bath pearls rather than the traditional Calgon water softener. I was not aware of the Kleen Tank service. I might have to give them a call to clean the tanks of my used, but new to me, RV.
I didn’t see this, but after I dump my black tank, I dump about 30 pounds of crushed ice in the toilet. Then I drive home, and dump the tank as soon as I get home. Then I fill with clean water using the “flush” port. When I dump that, it’s all clear water. Is that a good idea? How do I effectively clean the grease build up in the grey tank?
Jim we just had one of your guys out here to clean our tanks because our kitchen was filling up rather quickly. He said that we have mould in our tanks which I agree we probably do. But how do you get rid of the mould? Because our kitchen sink is still filling up rather quickly. We are able to go a little longer but still not like it used to be. The guy did an excellent job but its filling quickly
When my husband drains the black tank, he closes up the grey water drain so that tank fills. After the black tank drain, he drains the grey water and that soapy dishwasher and shower water cleans out the pipes really well. Doesn't do anything for the blank tank though, just the drain pipes.
Absolutely! It breaks the surface tension of water, making water "watery-er" (is that a word?). Just like the old Calgon bath TV commercial, surfaces in your tanks become slippery and resistant to waste sticking on them.
Really wasn’t sure why I clicked on this video. I’ve been full time RVing for just over three years now and have been treating the black tank like a septic system. Tank treatment, try to top it off with plain water just before dumping but rarely a complete rinsing. I would imagine if I have any buildup it would be on the ceiling and maybe in the corners of the black tank. The relatively small tank looks pristine inside after just dumping. Obviously cannot see the ceiling or corners, but I can say when I changed dump valves a few months ago there was no buildup on the tubing leading up to the tank. (I have one of those swivel 2 into 1 dump valves that I actually do swivel up for the added ground clearance so yes the seal started dripping from the grey tank side. 2 seals in three years is okay for me) Call me lazy, but the little money I spent on treatment does a good enough job with odors and cleaning out the tank between dumping. Maybe I’ll borrow a borescope sometime and check the ceiling and corners. Or just wait until I either quit full timing or sell the camper to get a professional cleaning(if needed). Good video though!
For a few weeks my Black Tank sensors kept giving me a full indication reading after dumping numerous times. I poured some white vinegar with dawn dish detergent & baking soda down the toilet ( full with fresh water 30 gal tank ) & let it sit for 30 min, dumped it again & it was back to normal. And yes more Sludge 💩 came out. BLT Rv'ers 🤗
Good question! We've ran extensive tests over the last 10 years, trying all versions of Pine-Sol (and equivalents) and Calgon (bath, laundry, dishwasher, water softener). We've found the Calgon Bath products -- and the Pearls, specifically -- to have the best results.
If you come to my rv park and tell me you use pine sol. I will politely ask you not to dump. I have a septic system. And pine sol kills the bacteria my septic tank depends on to keep it working properly
I am purchasing my 1st RV (used), I am in Texas, how much would it cost to bring my RV to you and get my tanks cleaned? This way I can start off fresh and maintain the tanks myself in the future?
we don't use chemicals in ours. Just water and water. but we still have a smell sometimes when we flush...??? we have to empty and flush bout every 3-4 days bc we r full time 4 in our family. any ideas or suggestions?
Because when the government made it impossible to live in a normal home and people started going towards rv life. They out there hands in it. Everything is now a shortage or you cant be approved for a rv especially with 15k down tells me exactly that
National Rv Training Academy did a TH-cam video comparing black tank additives. They actually recommended them. They gave Liquified the best additive. Is he saying that NRVTA is teaching the wrong information?
So I image to each his own applies here. The first video I saw them do was with Unique. I have been using that three years now. (Full time RVer) Does a wonderful job for me controlling odors and treating the solids. Saw the comparison video and thought I’d try Liquified because it did “liquify” better. For me though? It did not control the odor like Unique did. But? To each his own. I am sure you know everyone is different Including diets. Your crap may stink “differently” than mine. Otherwise, 3 years plus and no ill effects on the RV system. I do however just have a basic system. Toilet, tank, tube to dump valve. No sensors to worry about. I’ll also add Liquified is enzyme based while Unique is bacteria based. Both are “supposed” to be safe.
I wondered about that too, having just come from the NRVTA myself. Bacteria are there to help digest and PineSol can kill them, which has me wondering. I’ve tried this home grown recipe and yes my tanks smelled great, but it did have me wonder.
Usually the smell is caused by bad "Air Admitness Valve or a tank vent is obstructed. If vents are blocked when you dump your tanks the tanks being drained with cause the P-traps to empty and smell with come up thru the sink drains.
Mentioning bleach and vinegar in the same segment without emphasizing DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES MIX THEM makes me cringe. Acidified bleach is unbelievably corrosive to any ferrous metals.
Ok …. Years I’ve been doing this???? I use thetford liquid. I dump tank then flush tank 7-8 times flushing from top of toilet and also the clean out on side of trailer filling to top of toilet. Then I leave cap off on main line and let dry for several days. I cap ? Then put my liquid thetford with 3-4 gallons of water back in tank.. and ready for my next trip. After 30 years of same procedure? I have never ever had any problems? I also flush grey the same. I do not need to waste money on all these expensive chemicals…
Personally, we think RV owners use more than enough detergent that gets into their tanks. There's no need for more. In fact, over time, a super concentration of detergent can gel up and concentrate, causing clogs and other problems. Get a professional cleaning, use our tank solution and use plenty of water and you'll do just fine.
As a certified and insured RV technician working on RV's since 2009. The only thing exclusive about this video is it is misleading. This video sounds like they are paying each other. What Calgon and a cap of pin sol is free with a tank treatment? WOW!! Sign me up. I highly recommend the use of the natural enzyme products - never a clog or odors. Sludge or poop slurry means that the tank does not have clumps of poop and toilet paper or fat because it was LIQUIFIED. Yes use regular toilet paper! Use lots of water and flush your black tanks. The "exclusive" jetter is not very exclusive. A tank cleaner has to have a electric pressure washer that goes to 1500 PSI. Kleen tank is not doing anything more or less than all the other cleaners. outside of marketing and franchising. There are many certified insured independent tank cleaners that have a super cool 1500 psi jetter and we all do it the exact same way with a high pressure jetter hose, and high pressure jetter nozzles.
I would also like to see the comments that were removed about this business in person I saw it underneath that I was watching the video and I went to click that and it's removed
Incorrect. Happy Camper does a great job and doesn't turn to peanut butter or sludge. Verified with camera. Using YOUR method of just water, ended up with clogs every month. Using lots and lots and lots of water. This advice is meant to drum up business for your repair. Full time here.

@@kleentank thank you for that update there is a group of us still staying in contact. It was a family like environment. Great memories 👍❤️
That part is problematic @@kleentank
I use dawn liquid dish soap and pine sol to clean my grey & black tanks., Smells amazing!!
That's awesome! What a great success story.
Awesome, great video Miss subscriber. Thanks for all the information of New in this RV world.
Jim with Kleen tank seems like a awesome person. If we had that company here I would not only use the company, I would try and get a job with them
The best way to keep down black tank odor is to keep 2-3 inches of water in the bowl after each flush.
Bleach will also swell the rubber seals on your gate valves to the point of barely being able to move the valves.
And not to mention that it is extremely caustic. It can be used -- in a temporary and fast situation -- to sanitize your freshwater tank, but take the necessary precautions to flush it completely out of your RV's plumbing and holding system.
It’s very little bleach The rest is more water .
Thanks for the great info! I’ll be picking up a “fresh from the factory” new RV soon. It has 40gal grey/35 black tanks. How much water should I start out with in each. I’ll be doing a lot of 2 week boondocking so available volume is important to me. Grateful for the education!
Just get some cases of beer. You will fill it up with fluid quickly 💁♂️😂
That’s exactly what happens, mine fills up within a day if a couple my buddies come hangout … 💯
Question: why do we not want to use the liquid Calgon for laundry? And use the Calgon meant for baths?
I have used Pinesol and Calgon for a year and there is nothing better!
That's great to hear!
for years, have just used some dishwasher detergent to keep things clean and flowing.
Just bought 16 oz of Calgon bath pearls off Amazon for about 6 bucks👍🇺🇲
32 Oz in Walmart coast 6$
That’s lavender that also has vitamin e and aloe that’s at Walmart for little$. Is vitamin e and aloe ok?
I use 1/2 cup of borax and dawn each and I dissolve that in a bucket of warm water and I dump that down the RV toilet with plenty of water. No smells and it keeps the black tank liquified. You don't need a lot of borax, just a little. It's called the bio-geo method.
Yep. Just be careful of Borax. It's an extremely caustic chemical. In our opinion, Calgon Bath Pearls are a much better (and safer) option.
So should we get pine oil and add it to the tank?
Awesome video! Although we never drink from our freshwater holding tank, what is acceptable to use to sanitize the tank? We do clean the black/grey tanks using Jim's mixture. Cheers!
Kleentank cleaned our tanks in Shipshewana, IN when we were there for a rally and one of the tank sensors didn't work properly after the cleaning. I contacted the dealer, she was going to have one of their guys come take a look at it but the guy never showed up. I texted her a couple of times after that but never got a response. I'm sold this process works well but disappointed with the follow-through after the sale.
Question.. what is the shelf life of the pine sol calgon wated mix. Can k mix it now and use next summer
Bleach produces gas. I learned this horrible lesson years ago. When I opened the flush valve on a porta-Pottey. It launched the contents of the bowl all over the place.
Is there an alternative to the calgon? I cant use pinesol, so i use water and pine eo (essential oil)
Thanks for info. What RV park is this at. Looks very nice.
That's awesome! We're hoping to add one or two Oregon Kleen Tank dealers in 2024. Stay tuned!

I most certainly will :D
Hello
First thank you for these videos on black tanks I have 2 questions:
1) I am not a us resident, Where can I buy the pipe and fitting you using with your wather pressure machine?
2) We are 2 adults and we can barely go over 3 days with our 30g black thank. You reports family going 2-3 weeks. Do we use too much water.
Thank you
Allen
I use normal TP. Have been for years. I flush the black tank with the elbow sprayer every time. I leave the tank half full afterward. Only have trouble in the winter if it's super cold. NE Oregon.
What about if you are hooked to a sewer system and you tanks are never full.
How do you go about the maintenance for this scenario?
Kleenexes Tank is a good service, but the digesters info isn't real that great. If you flush well after each trip and dump 10ls of ice and a cup of Borax when traveling to your camp ground, your black tank will work well. Also if possible add a cup of Dawn dish soap to your grey tanks, and fill them with hot water, let them sit over night of possible, and drain and flush, and your never need a service like Kleen Tank
I would like to know Jim’s thoughts on a deep cleaning on a Entegra Reatta class A with a macerator pump
Jim’s contact info enjoythejourney.life/tank/
I used just water and odour eliminator and my thanks never had issues.
Can I put some bath beads and Pine-Sol in the tank then pour 5 gallons of water on top of it instead of premixing it before I leave for a trip?
Does absolutely nothing to my tanks except melt. My rv is set up to run smooth down the road, absolutely no rocking or forward and backward movement
Can I use the Calgon liquid instead of the beads?? As my unit is stationary and can’t be pulled out. Thanks
When my husband drains the black tank, he closes up the grey water drain so that tank fills. After the black tank drain, he drains the grey water and that soapy dishwasher and shower water cleans out the pipes really well. Doesn't do anything for the blank tank though, just the drain pipes.
I'm just curious how do you get that high-pressure hose into the gray tanks?
Very carefully
Great video. I was wondering, does Calgon work like a surfactant?
Absolutely! It breaks the surface tension of water, making water "watery-er" (is that a word?). Just like the old Calgon bath TV commercial, surfaces in your tanks become slippery and resistant to waste sticking on them.
Very good info, only bath flagon, not the other products like water softener, or dishwasher
Number 2 on our channel. I see what you did there!
Curious on how to maintain and clean the gray tank.
All videos and links enjoythejourney.life/tank/
So, I put this in before I start using the tank or I do it before I flush the tank(s)?
Before using
Why not calgon water softener?
Depends on the shape of your tank.
Why wasn’t Calgon water softener liquid mentioned? It’s in the laundry section. Will it be harmful to my tanks?
Good question! We've ran extensive tests over the last 10 years, trying all versions of Pine-Sol (and equivalents) and Calgon (bath, laundry, dishwasher, water softener). We've found the Calgon Bath products -- and the Pearls, specifically -- to have the best results.
Wow! Great info!
If you come to my rv park and tell me you use pine sol. I will politely ask you not to dump. I have a septic system. And pine sol kills the bacteria my septic tank depends on to keep it working properly
What is recommended to sanitize fresh tank?
I am purchasing my 1st RV (used), I am in Texas, how much would it cost to bring my RV to you and get my tanks cleaned? This way I can start off fresh and maintain the tanks myself in the future?
Congrats! Just contact Kleen Tank for a quote enjoythejourney.life/tank/
Excellent information. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Kleen tank is only in 3 cities in Canada, in Alberta and Ontario. No where near me in Canada
Are you putting this in the grey tank as well?
we don't use chemicals in ours. Just water and water. but we still have a smell sometimes when we flush...??? we have to empty and flush bout every 3-4 days bc we r full time 4 in our family. any ideas or suggestions?
what about a macerator pump? Do you need to use the drop in tablets to "break down the toliet paper?"
I may have missed it on ratio or amount Calgon and Pinesol per tank. Thank you
Found it
How do you clean the tanks when you have a Macerator pump system?
so 4oz of the tst max orange scent is a no no?
How can I open my black tank when handle won’t budge

So good 😮
Good video
THANKS!
Has he tried to clean a tank after they have just used his mixture for a year? Curious to see the results.
Yes, Jim re-cleaned our tanks for one of our upcoming videos. One year of using regular toilet paper and only his tank solution.
Oh great
@@EnjoyTheJourneyLife
any spoilers you can drop here ;)? I promise to still watch that video, of course.
Why don't y'all have a company in Oklahoma?
Usually the smell is caused by bad "Air Admitness Valve or a tank vent is obstructed. If vents are blocked when you dump your tanks the tanks being drained with cause the P-traps to empty and smell with come up thru the sink drains.
Mentioning bleach and vinegar in the same segment without emphasizing DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES MIX THEM makes me cringe. Acidified bleach is unbelievably corrosive to any ferrous metals.
Good thing there is no metals in the 💩 system 💁♂️😂
@@kevink4914 There are steel screws holding the valves together. Get that stuff on them and they're toast. The sensor probes are also metal.
The chlorine gas that is produced can be lethal.
I just use plain water, has worked for 12 years
This coming from the guy who wants to charge big bucks to clean out your stopped up black tank. Yeah, I believe him! 😂
Hi Jim!!
Hello good sir! So nice to hear from you, brother!
I am craving chocolate milk
I have been using dawn and calgon for laundry; but will be switching to the beads. But what about using the dawn? Coments appreciated.
Sadly, the Calgon/Pinesol solution caused a significant respiratory reaction with my wife and we had to stop using it.
This is what I'm worried about

There are many certified insured independent tank cleaners that have a super cool 1500 psi jetter and we all do it the exact same way with a high pressure jetter hose, and high pressure jetter nozzles.
h2o2 35 % or 17 % ???
Has anyone ever told you that you look like Buzz Light Year 🤣🤣
And just about every certified RV technician will tell you that every thing this guy told you was wrong, except for making sure to use enough water.

Incorrect. Happy Camper does a great job and doesn't turn to peanut butter or sludge. Verified with camera. Using YOUR method of just water, ended up with clogs every month. Using lots and lots and lots of water. This advice is meant to drum up business for your repair. Full time here.
