i just rewatched all of these guide videos that i watched when i first got terraria. i now have all endgame gear for each class and i have beaten the calamity mod on revengeance mode. i feel an ineffable sadness and happiness rewatching these guide videos. thank you, salendrak. you have really helped me a lot in terraria

i'm an old school terraria player returning to the game after these huge updates, and your tutorials are super helpful in getting caught up on all the new and changed mechanics.. the wiki is a great resource, but sometimes i just need a simplified version with visual illustrations to understand the basic mechanics and strategies, and your videos do exactly that.

Holy shit you just saved my interest in Terraria so hard. Ever since 1.4 I was so confused on how NPC's got changed and just made it so hard learning what I needed to know. This guide finally covers all of what I wasn't sure about and I'm so ready to get grinding again!
Pylons are essentially a giant middle finger to everyone who spent hours setting up a teleportation system pre-1.4. Edit: this was a dumb joke i made a year ago, pylons are still great
And master mode is a giant middle finger to people who beat/played expert? Is Zenith a giant middle finger to players who got Meowmere etc. pre 1.4? This is silly logic that flies in the face of the entire point of the game.

I'm just saying that for some people, they spent a lot of time setting up teleportation systems in pre-1.4, and pylons essentially negated most of this. It was just a light-hearted joke. Plus not to beat you up or anything but the meowmere thing does not make sense since you need meowmere to make Zenith. At least I'm a cute fraud right? (if you get that reference I love you)
In Xbox 360 edition I had done it but sadly my Xbox 360 died rip but I was going to do it on my Xbox one aswell until they released 1.14 not that long ago
Tips for pylon locations: 1. Surface: recommended to spawn with a fishing pond and an uncorruptable border to keep it clean 2. Cavern: I recommend it to the hell, bit if you have a lava conch, It's better to put it near a spider nest, near an afk farm (make a little distance, the town decreases spawn rate) or to the underground jungle. 3. Desert: I recommend it to put it on the side where there's no jungle, or near the dungeon 4. Snow: same with the desert 5. Jungle: to the surface near a fishing pond and a cave entrance, but also good in underground jungle near lizhard dungeon 6. Beach:put it where there's less pylons, or to the dungeon side, also recommended to build your fishron arena there 7. Mushroom: usually to a manmade mushroom biome near important places, like afk farms or arenas. 8. Hallowed: near a fishing pond, can be on surface, near bossfight arenas, afk farms, at a hallowed spawn, or at a hallowed dungeon, actually where you can find hallow and has a really good location. Edit: do what you want with the joker, I won't farm for that
All good suggestions! I generally like them to be pretty evenly spaced out along the surface, and then just drop helevators down to anything specific below that, as it gets me there pretty fast and helps prevent biome spread in hardmode. For cavern, I like it to be around mid-point below my surface base in the middle of the world, that way it won't get caught in the Hardmode V or evil / hallow, and of course with a fishing pond right there. Added bonus if there is a spider cavern nearby, as well as a mushroom fishing spot. Obviously though some things will vary based on world generation, as well as personal preference!

Your begginers guide helped me a ton I already defeated the eye, the brain, the skull, the worm, and the slime, and I came super close to defeateing the wall of flesh I don't know how I'm using a star cannon and it's doing well but I don't know how to make potions I'm kinda lost but you did help me a lot you are the best and keep up the good work
Thanks!! For Wall of Flesh, I've always been a fan of Bee Grenades. Try it out! For potions, you either need an empty bottle placed on a platform or table, or an Alchemy Table from the Dungeon. Stand next to it and it will be the crafting station for making potions. Show a bottled water to the guide to see all the recipes. They really do help a TON!!
@@crookyman5597 Standard issue potions for most boss-fights and events are Ironskin, Regeneration, and Swiftness. From there you can also add Endurance, Summoning, and various evil-biome potions that require fishing. Have you seen my Modifier and Buffs video? It goes over all that stuff!

You actually _can_ get the snow pylon from the nurse and arms dealer. Just follow these steps: 1. Build NPC housing on the edge of the snow biome and move the nurse and arms dealer in. 2. Talk to the arms dealer while not in the snow biome. This is when his happiness is determined. 3. With the arms dealer's dialogue still open, step into the snow biome, then open his shop inventory. Happiness isn't recalculated, so he's still happy enough to sell pylons. I think you can also get the hallow pylon pre-hardmode if you create an artificial hallow. Though this pretty much requires visiting a hardmode world to get hallow blocks. This is also the only way to get pre-hardmode hallow crates from fishing, as once hardmode starts the pre-hardmode crates no longer drop. While you're at it, you can also grab the blocks you need to create an artificial evil biome for whichever evil isn't already in your world.
Yeah, there are a couple of ways to manipulate biome activation to your benefit, but I've never found the need to bother with it. Similarly I never go to other worlds to get anything, unless it's an item that is just refusing to appear in a given world and I know I have plenty elsewhere. I'm looking at you Nazar!
@@salendrak I like playing Journey Mode for the collectathon aspect of R&D, so visiting other worlds is kind of necessary or I'll miss out on researching certain things (e.g. pre-hardmode hallow crates, everything from the other evil biome). But yeah, aside from that, it's certainly not necessary. As for the snow pylon, I just use that trick because I know it will work, and getting both the nurse and arms dealer is pretty easy. Maybe next time I'll try a different set of NPCs that doesn't require this trick. Mostly I just wasn't aware of other NPC combos that would work, so thanks for highlighting a few!
Oh lord, I did not think about making an artificial Mushroom biome to round out my Pylons. I've been running over half of my map on a skybridge to reach the eastern ocean, and I did not realize that I could have just used some mud and glowing mushroom seeds and then be set.
Another option to get from coast to coast is the Magic Conch, which can be found in the Desert. But other than that, yeah, I usually put my self-made glowing mushroom biome somewhere that is otherwise harder to get to, such as the dungeon. You'll need the glowing mushroom area for the Truffle NPC in hardmode anyways!

Happy to help! It used to be that privacy and loved neighbors would get you any pylon, but now you have to make sure that they at least also don't dislike the biome. So arms dealer with nurse still works for anything, but painter and dryad also works for everything except forest.
@@arturkey9084 A secret world seed called For the Worthy. The hardest challenge available so far. Particularly if you attempt it on Hardcore difficulty.
So it's actually be changed once or twice since I made this video. Here's a copy-paste from the wiki: There are no more than two other NPCs within 25 tiles, and there are no more than three other NPCs between 25 and 120 tiles away. Basically just don't have more than 4 NPCs in a village and you'll be fine. They also decreased the price benefit you get from this bonus, so now it's only like 5% I think.
So u mean npc like goblin tinkerer only need 2 other npcs or one to get the privacy bonus and 3 npcs near the goblin tinkerer will unable the privacy bonus?
@@redbloon4187 for privacy you don't need any other NPCs around - they can be alive and get the bonus! That's not very helpful though since you need two NPCs for s Pitkin to work. Just don't ever put more than 4 in a small area and you'll be fine 👍
Just encountered a funny issue what painter wont sell pylon during Christmas and a party, or during Christmas on drunk world. Its because all slots get busy and only one left so player can sell items to him
By the time I get to hardmode I tend to not worry about it too much. I typically put the Wizard in a Hallow biome, Cyborg gets moved into the Snow, Pirate to the Ocean, Steampunker wherever. I usually don't worry too much about money at that point anyways.
Initially I keep him close to home to sell stuff to, and pair him with the nurse to get the forest pylon. Later on it really doesn't matter, as you won't use him much anyways.
Depends on the part of the video, but mostly should be this: 2.1.2.1555776252 How much of your current world have you explored? Have you done the full surface? Beehives can be hard to find sometimes.
@@IDarkFireYT Well, unless you're playing the Drunk World seed, worlds will only have either Crimson OR Corruption, but not both. And honestly I've never heard of a world not having the jungle temple or hives, as it's baked into the world generation script. Have you opened the world using TEdit to really see where everything is?
I'm pretty sure that won't make either of them happy enough. For snow pylon, I usually do Painter with Dryad, then reassign them to the jungle. Or if you have the mechanic, put her with the Tinkerer in the snow and she will sell the snow pylon. Goblin might too in that setup!
Next episode, coming out in the next week, will have an infographic with a good hard mode NPC arrangement 👍 Note though that there are differing opinions on what the "best" arrangement is. Do you want to get the best average happiness for ALL NPCs, or get max happiness for the NPCs that you tend to spend the most money on? YMMV!
These guide videos generally have several different worlds, actually. If there's a specific section that you like, let me know and I can track down the specific seed!
Really the only thing to add in hardmode is the Hallow Pylon, and maybe Universal, though I've never bothered to get that one. Check my preparing for hardmode guide for an updated list of where I like to house NPCs, including the hardmode ones. I like to have all the housing in place (except hallow) before downing the Wall of Flesh, but making more houses can also just be done during hard mode.
I was editing a map in TEdit and realised you can place quite alot of universal pylons. I've placed about 12 or so. Not sure if there's a limit to how many can work.
Man I used to have a screenshot I got from one of your videos that showed your preferred arrangement for npc's but I can't find the video where you show it. It's a chart that showed which npc's like each other the most and what biome. I've sifted through your videos to try to find it again but I can't find it.
also, could you do a hardmode update on this? I'm aiming for a full NPC world and would love to leave room for the rest of the crew, my residences are quite complex and having to reshape and plan it all over to fit more NPCs is kinda scary
For the grass roof effect? If I remember right, it was some combination of the leaf wands (there are a few types) painted brown, with background leaf walls of varying types, also painted brown.
Yup - you can think you're not in a particular biome, but if there are enough of a right type of block in the nearby vicinity, it will register as a different biome. Pretty common really!
But what is your guide isn't named Shawn? HEHE - just kidding. Pretty sure you meant spawn, but that was still funny. The only problem with that is then you can't just warp to somewhere else FROM your spawn unless you have easy access to another biome pylon to connect to the network. But then there's also no reason you can't make a bed and set your spawn to a different location as well. Really it all just comes down to personal prefernece!!
@@salendrak that's true, but my desert pylon is like 3 seconds to the east of my spawn point, and magic conch can bring you to the ocean pylon automatically as well
As in figure out exactly how happy they are? There's no way to just look it up in game, but what you can do is look at the price of something they're selling, then compare it to the regular price of the item as listed on the wiki, and do the math to figure out how discounted or increased the price is.
Okay so quick question, if I’m playing in a Remix or Zenith world am I able to make a forest biome with a forest pylon in the sky? I’m trying to test it out now and it’s not working too well. It keeps saying the Pylon is not in the correct biome.
For more context, I’m trying to make a sky base that I can warp to using the forest pylon in my Zenith world. I just bought one and the only other pylons I have are the cavern and mushroom and they work fine. I’m trying to establish a base that I can go to when I want to explore the surface. Do you think I can do that?
Not sure, really. Zenith / Remix really change things up in terms of where the different biomes are located. In a default world, forest pylon requires correct biome as well as correct elevation, but in Remix things are...different!
Hmmm - my guess is you aren't deep enough. Underground is a separate layer above the cavern layer. You can recognize it by the default dirt looking background art when no walls are present, and a brown background on the map, whereas the cavern layer has a grey background on the map, and stone looking background art when there are no walls.

3. With the arms dealer's dialogue still open, step into the snow biome, then open his shop inventory. Happiness isn't recalculated, so he's still happy enough to sell pylons.
I think you can also get the hallow pylon pre-hardmode if you create an artificial hallow. Though this pretty much requires visiting a hardmode world to get hallow blocks. This is also the only way to get pre-hardmode hallow crates from fishing, as once hardmode starts the pre-hardmode crates no longer drop. While you're at it, you can also grab the blocks you need to create an artificial evil biome for whichever evil isn't already in your world.
Yeah, there are a couple of ways to manipulate biome activation to your benefit, but I've never found the need to bother with it. Similarly I never go to other worlds to get anything, unless it's an item that is just refusing to appear in a given world and I know I have plenty elsewhere. I'm looking at you Nazar!
@@salendrak I like playing Journey Mode for the collectathon aspect of R&D, so visiting other worlds is kind of necessary or I'll miss out on researching certain things (e.g. pre-hardmode hallow crates, everything from the other evil biome). But yeah, aside from that, it's certainly not necessary.
As for the snow pylon, I just use that trick because I know it will work, and getting both the nurse and arms dealer is pretty easy. Maybe next time I'll try a different set of NPCs that doesn't require this trick. Mostly I just wasn't aware of other NPC combos that would work, so thanks for highlighting a few!
Oh lord, I did not think about making an artificial Mushroom biome to round out my Pylons. I've been running over half of my map on a skybridge to reach the eastern ocean, and I did not realize that I could have just used some mud and glowing mushroom seeds and then be set.
Another option to get from coast to coast is the Magic Conch, which can be found in the Desert. But other than that, yeah, I usually put my self-made glowing mushroom biome somewhere that is otherwise harder to get to, such as the dungeon. You'll need the glowing mushroom area for the Truffle NPC in hardmode anyways!

Happy to help! It used to be that privacy and loved neighbors would get you any pylon, but now you have to make sure that they at least also don't dislike the biome. So arms dealer with nurse still works for anything, but painter and dryad also works for everything except forest.

So it's actually be changed once or twice since I made this video. Here's a copy-paste from the wiki:
There are no more than two other NPCs within 25 tiles, and there are no more than three other NPCs between 25 and 120 tiles away.
Basically just don't have more than 4 NPCs in a village and you'll be fine. They also decreased the price benefit you get from this bonus, so now it's only like 5% I think.
So u mean npc like goblin tinkerer only need 2 other npcs or one to get the privacy bonus and 3 npcs near the goblin tinkerer will unable the privacy bonus?
@@redbloon4187 for privacy you don't need any other NPCs around - they can be alive and get the bonus! That's not very helpful though since you need two NPCs for s Pitkin to work. Just don't ever put more than 4 in a small area and you'll be fine 👍

Just encountered a funny issue what painter wont sell pylon during Christmas and a party, or during Christmas on drunk world. Its because all slots get busy and only one left so player can sell items to him

By the time I get to hardmode I tend to not worry about it too much. I typically put the Wizard in a Hallow biome, Cyborg gets moved into the Snow, Pirate to the Ocean, Steampunker wherever. I usually don't worry too much about money at that point anyways.

Initially I keep him close to home to sell stuff to, and pair him with the nurse to get the forest pylon. Later on it really doesn't matter, as you won't use him much anyways.

@@IDarkFireYT Well, unless you're playing the Drunk World seed, worlds will only have either Crimson OR Corruption, but not both. And honestly I've never heard of a world not having the jungle temple or hives, as it's baked into the world generation script. Have you opened the world using TEdit to really see where everything is?

I’ve put the tinkerer in the snow with the dye trader but the pylon still isn’t available for purchase
I'm pretty sure that won't make either of them happy enough. For snow pylon, I usually do Painter with Dryad, then reassign them to the jungle. Or if you have the mechanic, put her with the Tinkerer in the snow and she will sell the snow pylon. Goblin might too in that setup!
I know this video is 9 months old, but when is the hardmode video going to come out with all the best groupings on npcs

Note though that there are differing opinions on what the "best" arrangement is. Do you want to get the best average happiness for ALL NPCs, or get max happiness for the NPCs that you tend to spend the most money on? YMMV!

Really the only thing to add in hardmode is the Hallow Pylon, and maybe Universal, though I've never bothered to get that one. Check my preparing for hardmode guide for an updated list of where I like to house NPCs, including the hardmode ones. I like to have all the housing in place (except hallow) before downing the Wall of Flesh, but making more houses can also just be done during hard mode.

I was editing a map in TEdit and realised you can place quite alot of universal pylons. I've placed about 12 or so. Not sure if there's a limit to how many can work.

What block did you use on your ocean house roof?
For the grass roof effect? If I remember right, it was some combination of the leaf wands (there are a few types) painted brown, with background leaf walls of varying types, also painted brown.

Fact: when I was I terraria I was trying to set up a cavern pylon but because I was so close to the desert biome it identified as a desert pylon.
Yup - you can think you're not in a particular biome, but if there are enough of a right type of block in the nearby vicinity, it will register as a different biome. Pretty common really!

I usually make the forest pylon at a forest not near spawn because the magic mirror can bring you to Shawn already

HEHE - just kidding. Pretty sure you meant spawn, but that was still funny. The only problem with that is then you can't just warp to somewhere else FROM your spawn unless you have easy access to another biome pylon to connect to the network. But then there's also no reason you can't make a bed and set your spawn to a different location as well. Really it all just comes down to personal prefernece!!

How do you look up your npc’s current happiness level
As in figure out exactly how happy they are? There's no way to just look it up in game, but what you can do is look at the price of something they're selling, then compare it to the regular price of the item as listed on the wiki, and do the math to figure out how discounted or increased the price is.

Okay so quick question, if I’m playing in a Remix or Zenith world am I able to make a forest biome with a forest pylon in the sky? I’m trying to test it out now and it’s not working too well. It keeps saying the Pylon is not in the correct biome.
For more context, I’m trying to make a sky base that I can warp to using the forest pylon in my Zenith world. I just bought one and the only other pylons I have are the cavern and mushroom and they work fine. I’m trying to establish a base that I can go to when I want to explore the surface. Do you think I can do that?
Not sure, really. Zenith / Remix really change things up in terms of where the different biomes are located. In a default world, forest pylon requires correct biome as well as correct elevation, but in Remix things are...different!

Hmmm - my guess is you aren't deep enough. Underground is a separate layer above the cavern layer. You can recognize it by the default dirt looking background art when no walls are present, and a brown background on the map, whereas the cavern layer has a grey background on the map, and stone looking background art when there are no walls.
