This is a Motormouth couple car review of the updated 2022 Jeep Compass Trailhawk subcompact SUV. Jeep tweaked the exterior of the Compass with a refreshed front and rear fascia, smaller LED headlights, a larger lower grille, thinner grille slats, new taillights, available 16” to 19” wheels depending on the trim you choose, an available gloss black roof that extends the length of the vehicle and an available power liftgate making it easy to load and unload your cargo. It is powered by a 2.4L 4-cylinder engine with 177 horsepower and 172 lb-ft of torque. AWD models come with a 9-speed automatic transmission, FWD models a 6-speed automatic transmission. The Compass is a pretty good city run around but once you get it on the highway, I find the engine to be lethargic and quite loud when accelerating to pass another vehicle. This Jeep comes with 4x4 capability and the Selec-Terrain Traction Management System giving you the confidence to tackle different road conditions with confidence. The system features Sand/Mud, Snow and Auto settings. We are driving the Trailhawk model which is trail rated with more ground clearance of 8.6” compared to other models with 7.7”. Exclusive to the Trailhawk is hill descent and Rock Mode that doubles down on traction control to help tackle challenging conditions during on or off-road travels. The biggest changes come to the interior, there is less hard plastic compared to the outgoing model and it has a more modern design. The Compass comes with a standard 8.4” touchscreen with Uconnect 5, available 10.1” touchscreen and 10.25” digital driver display on the higher trims. Available heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, wireless charger and a 9-speaker Alpine Premium audio system. Available safety systems include, blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, forward collision warning and active lane management. There are plenty of trims to choose from with a FWD starting price of $29,795 CAD/$26,785 USD and AWD $31,295 CAD/$28,285 USD. Our test model Trailhawk with standard AWD starts at $38,995 CAD/$34,605 USD. Price as tested $44,480 CAD.

I have this exact vehicle and it is great , the issue with the engine is overstated by every road test , its very good and unless its foot to the floor and 6000 rpm the interior noise is comparable to the competition , using the adaptive cruise and highway assist the ride is great , a couple of hundred miles on a free vehicle does not really tell the real accurate story

This Compass looks great inside and out plus it has good ground clearance. With that being said there's no excuses to have a motor with horrible NVH and slow performance. So many manufacturers have found that balance between fuel economy and refinement when it comes to 4 cylinder engines.

I just saw another review of the Compass Trailhawk with pretty much every other comparable SUV you can think off and it was near the bottom for off-roading. The chassis was not rigid enough (the door wouldn't close at an angle) and it hardly made it up an incline with logs. Very very disappointing for a Jeep. And yes we heard the engine, sooo loud!

Compass and Renegade are perfect vehicles for those who want a "rugged" Jeep image. Trailblazer and Encore GX are more like another GM "rental special" which I will have a chance to try them, when I am going on a trip at an airport rental lots somewhere in Chicago or SFO. Ecosport is just a pathetic joke which Ford tried to milk this segment, thank godness it will be discontinued.

My wife has a 2022 Compass trail hawk and loves it. I have a f150 with a 3.5 twin turbo and i can say yes the jeep is not nearly as fast but has no problem passing or going up hills. No one drives with their foot to the floor to get going either. The jeep is a pleasure to drive and also is a beast in the snow and has good off road capability. Don't be afraid to buy one as it's a great fun to drive and great looking vehicle.

This engine is the 'world engine' , both 4 and 6 cyl versions the result of joint project between Chrysler (while owned by benz) , Mitsubishi , and Hyundai.
Problem is the former two made no improvements while Hyundai continued to refine and improve its versions of the base 4 and 6.
FYI: Hyundai did block, Mitsu the heads, Chrysler the intake and exhaust systems in the base versions.

This is a prime example of a vehicle selling mainly on its image/looks; the poor performance, NVH, reliability and value would make anyone looking for a sensible purchase not touch it with a 10-ft pole! On reliability, I don't pay any attention to the JD Powers' ratings which are totally out of whack both in comparison to anecdotal evidence with different brands and to the ratings of other, more reputable sources like Consumer Reports. Thanks for a most useful, yet entertaining, review; it's refreshing to see reviewers who properly call out issues they find in a car as opposed to many of the other reviewers who sugarcoat heir comments so as not to offend the car companies!

I bought the 2022 Red edition. I have no issues with it. It's not a sports car so why does it need to be fast? Get in relax enjoy the comfortable seats listen to some good tunes and just cruise to your destination. I remember when 177hp was pretty respectable numbers. I remember the 2001 jeeps only had 190 hp inline 6 and weighed more. It's funny how everyone wants a ridiculously fast accelerating SUV. 1992 Camaro RS 305 v8 only had 170 hp and was considered fast in the 90's. I'd say 177 hp from 2.4l engine is pretty good for a na engine.

They made improvements, but only time will tell about the efficacy of the tweaks. I, for one, am optimistic and with proper maintenance, it should be better than most are expecting. I never understood Jeep. Outside of the Grand Cherokee, everyone makes excuses for them. I’ve rented multiple jeeps and been in many. The quirks are supposed to be enduring, but it’s mostly bad quality. The Wrangler can’t go down a road in a straight line and if you drive it in the winter, your head freezes and your feet sweat (and if you get a manual the transmission can pop out of gear). I had a Jeep Compass rental in Puerto Rico, what a POS. It was a joke. It was a few versions older than the current, but I guess it never changes. Same thoughts you had. The regular Cherokee is so so. But the steering is light and the front end feels like it’s a bag of bolts.

Jeep always meant: solid, strong and durable. Then, Jeep was bought with AMC by Chrysler Corp in the early 80's and quality began to swirl around the toilet bowl. Then Fiat took Chryco by the throat. Since then, the swirling to the bottom of that bowl is all but complete. Because we know what Fiat is known for, don't we? (It ain't good!😂)

In the US, the styling is nice, but the powertrain is simply totally mediocre. A crossover that folks will buy once, be dissatisfied, and nobody wants another. My local dealership in Westbury last month had 4 Cherokees for sale, and over 100 Compasses which says it all.

it is no Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk or Grand Cherokee. Jeep is placing the badge on some ? models (trailhawk). You should have reviewed the Cherokee trailhawk with the V6 :).

And with that opinion your reputation is toast.

For the price and abysmal fuel economy, why not just get a Subaru outback wilderness. More room inside, quieter cabin, and a lot more power. All for pretty much the same penalty on your wallet

I feel fuel economy on all new cars will be a focus as energy security in regards to fuel is the current issue with large price hikes. The days of ICE cars is gradually drawing to an end and over the next 15-20 yrs will see a complete market shift in my opinion.

Nice looking, great in this color...but the engine is just so-so for city driving. Time for Jeep to invent a new 4 cylinder, no turbo please, and dual-injection is what people want nowadays.

This is exactly why I’m waiting until they can at least update and get rid of this engine!! I test drove a 2018 and it was horrible

I have driven 4 different years of this jeep and yes don’t try going up a hill with five people. It has the worst trans. It makes no sense, some at keep must have test drive these compass up a hill. The older models were worse .

Can anyone tell me if they ever fixed the oil consumption issue with the Tiger Shark? A friend's wife has a Cherokee with a tiger shark and it drinks oil as well as gas.
The interior does look great and size has always been a good point of the Compass. But yeah buy a Crosstrek.

That was an absolutely hilarious question! (Hahaha! I’m still laughing)… ‘Will it overtake the CrossTrek in sales…’. Short answer. No. It won’t.
It is a trendy little CUV. It is better looking than many similar vehicles. The Jeep badge and tech does add some additional value. I personally would not recommend this little runabout to buy, but I wouldn’t hesitate to short term lease it (a lease being based on depreciation), until you could afford something better. Wait! At well over $45,000… EVERYTHING is better. Thanks for the video.

Seems like the easiest solution is to offer the 2.0L Turbo from the Wrangler as an optional engine.
