Hack: Drying Lettuce

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 17 ก.ค. 2015
  • If you don't have a salad spinner or you need to dry a big bunch of lettuce that won't fit in your salad spinner.... this hack is for you. And it's FREE, too!
    PS Some tips for ensuring a clean bag each time:
    - Use a bag that was double bagged so it didn't touch groceries
    - Ask for an extra bag at check out (also great if you bring reusable bags)
    - Use a pillowcase that you can wash and dry each time
    - Use a mesh bag (must do outside)
    - Use a gallon size ziptop style bag

    Thank you for sharing your mom's technique! I'm buying a huge mesh produce bag to use for large batches of lettuce. I'm blessed with being able to step outside to scare the neighbors with my new salad spinning technique.

    Using a large-hole mesh laundry bag works better to keep the greens dry. Just step out on to the deck or veranda and spin away. If you can't go outside, then put the laundry bag in a plastic bag and use it as a water catcher before whirling away. Be sure not to just let the laundry bag tumble freely in the plastic bag or it will sit in the wicked water. Hold on to both the laundry bag and the plastic bag so the water completely separates from the leaves.

      LOVE this! I'll be trying it with the laundry bag within the plastic bag soon!

    It worked! I had a lot of lettuce to cut up. I cut it, washed it, put it in a strainer...then I put it in another strainer inside the bag (so the lettuce at the bottom wouldn't end up back in the excess water) and spun it. It worked great! I had an old salad spinner I got from a yard sale, but got rid of it b/c I live in a small space and it was always in the way. Thanks, Mom ;p and thank you for making this video.

    I will try this hack. But I am curious if anyone else has thought about the inside of the grocery bag being dirty from items you've previously carried home from the store after shopping. I guess you can clean the bag before using it of course.

      Sorry I just saw this! A few people suggested using a pillow case or a large food storage bag. I use the second bag when they double bag my groceries (so the one that didn't have groceries inside of it). Hope this helps!!

    I drain lettuce in a colander. I cover a colander with a flour sack towel. Lay the washed greens in the towel covered colander. Then fold the remaining towel over the top of the greens & then shake the covered colander over the sink, moving it in all directions. Done.

    I use to put my lettuce in a pillow case and stand in the backyard and swing it until all water is out. I make lots of jarred salads so I use like 3 heads of lettuce.

    • @WillowJaroshNutrition

      I prefer the pillowcase idea - far, far too many plastic bags being used in thd world. I wouldn't want to be re-using a wet plastic bag time and again (of worse, trying to dry the bag out between uses)

    I’m so glad I came across this video. I had a huge salad spinner, and it took up a lot of room and it was a headache to wash my greens in it. My lettuce still had a lot of water after use and then I would take a paper towel to soak up more water.
    I can’t wait to try this today! I may go back to eating more salads now. There’s nothing worse than having chopped up “soggy” lettuce. Thank you so much for sharing your tips!

    I take a large dish towel and place my greens in the middle, and wrap the towel around the greens like a burrito. Then hold one end of the dishtowel securely in each hand & spin the towel until it can't spin anymore, first towards you then away from you. You will end up with the water in the towel, and dry lettuce!
    It is great to learn a technique that doesn't require adding more to the laundry pile. Please only use grocery bags that have set in your car/garage/house for at least a month to let all of the outside germs die off on the bags first.

    Can't wait to try this next time. I've spent all day laying my greens out on and under weighted dishtowes (that's how my mom does) and they still soak paper towels. Also I can never get them completely clean even after many washes and soaks. Too much work if you ask me lol. It's fine. I definitely didn't want to get a salad spinner that has limited uses. Anyways, I'll try this next time bc mixed salad greens don't freakin dry no matter how many paper towels you put on them. But hopefully this hack will help

    You can just use big gallon size ziplock bags and pin prick multiple holes and insert that into and outer good ziplock bag. Open the pin prick zip bag put the wet lettuce inside zip. That bag. Then insert the lettuce pin prick bag into good zip bag zip it and shake around the world like you did. Then unzip the outside bag and then the lettuce. You will get dry lettuce.

      Ok. One full head of iceberg lettuce .... dry enough. Worked better than that roll of paper towels the other night. NOW! We all know iceberg and it’s 20 thousand nooks and crannies throughput its entire nutritionless head. But, lately I’ve gotten so sick of that bagged salad, with no crunch or texture. Heck! It doesn’t even get cold! So, instead, I’ve gone back to iceberg as my BASE for all the healthy, nutritious stuff I add. But I digress. I had to give it quite a few spins, then broke it down into smaller chunks. I added about 10 slightly crumpled paper towels to the bag and gave it its final spin. I must say, I’m impressed and the words SALAD SPINNER!!! will not be going on this girls list! Thank you ... and thank your Mom for me.

    You would need to use new unused grocery bags or maybe a thin pillowcase would do the job. You could put the pillow case in your washer on spin dry for a few minutes.

      @WillowJaroshNutrition  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      wow using the washing machine on spin dry is a whole other level! and definitely use a clean grocery bag!

  • @faithbelleg7465
    @faithbelleg7465 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    What do you do with the bag after? How do you air it out? Seems like the bag would be in the way while drying.

    • @WillowJaroshNutrition
      @WillowJaroshNutrition  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I either use it as a trash bag (and then use a new bag for lettuce the next time) or I turn it inside out and prop it up over my blender to dry on the counter. If I cleaned lettuce for dinner then I let the bag dry out overnight -- otherwise it sits over my blender until dry which is definitely in the way but I have no other option in NYC. My mom has a yard with a clothesline and she hangs hers there to dry! I also love someone's suggestion to use a clean pillowcase. then you could dry in the bathroom and toss in the laundry or hang on the clothesline or toss in the dryer!

      Good point! Someone suggested using a pillowcase or two and that could be an option! Or a small trash bag (from a sealed package)? I’ll let my mom know you gave her a shout 🤗

  • @wplains

    Great idea. The problem is plastic bags are being phased out where I live. Soon you won’t be able to find a single one.

    • @WillowJaroshNutrition
      @WillowJaroshNutrition  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is definitely true. Small trash bags can work (and be reused) as long as they aren’t scented/treated and I’ve had some luck with the extra large produce bags at some grocery stores working for smaller batches of greens. And if you have outdoor space, a few people have suggested dedicating a clean pillowcase just to spinning greens! We will have to get creative!!!

    I would rather use a 1 gallon bucket or something similar. That way I can clean the bucket before and after use to prevent cross contamination.

    What's a CSA? Thanks much.

    • @WillowJaroshNutrition
      @WillowJaroshNutrition  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s a share in a local farm! So you don’t know exactly what you’ll be getting each week but you pay for the season and the farm delivers veggies (and in some cases fruit) that they harvest each week! It stands for Community Supported Agriculture. I loved being a part of a CSA but woahhhhhhh some weeks there was a LOT of lettuce 😂

  • @judyn3740
    @judyn3740 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You can also do this with a clean dishtowel, although you need to do it outside :)

    • @WillowJaroshNutrition
      @WillowJaroshNutrition  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love this idea! Do you fold it around the lettuce and then spin it around from the edges?

    • @sojanjoseph1672
      @sojanjoseph1672 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WillowJaroshNutrition I also do the dish towel method, but it results in water spill but quite effective in drying lettuce. Ideally i would like to make a contraption using my hand blender to get is perfectly dry. How can one be certain that the inside of a plastic bag is clean, that's a worry with your method. But inserting the dish towel method in the plastic bag is ideal as it will not spray water all around the kitchen.
