How to Clean and Store Lettuce

  • I grow so much lettuce and other tender greens in my garden, but there are times when I'm inundated with the harvest. I love the various type of available lettuce and grow both heads of lettuce and rows of smaller, leafed varieties. Having such a bounty means that I can't use it all at once. Anyone else have that same problem? 🙋🏻‍♂️ Storing lettuce, when done properly, can prolong its life and allow you to use it up over a few weeks!

Just FYI: the best time to harvest lettuce from the garden is early in the morning or later in the evening when the sun is weaker. This keeps the lettuce crisper.
    Here's the process:
    - Once picked, immediately bring it indoors. If the lettuce has wilted or feels a bit limp, plunge it in ice water for a few minutes to revive it.
    - Open up the heads of lettuce and rinse each leaf. Remove any dirt, insects, and debris.
    - Lay the leaves on a towel and let dry slightly. If the pieces are small enough, you can also use a salad spinner to dry them.
    - Once only a few droplets of water remain, line a large airtight container with a damp paper towel.
    - Layer in the lettuce, but do not smash it. You can also use a large plastic bag.
    - Place the lid on top and store it in the refrigerator.
Surprisingly, this method allows the lettuce to last 2-3 weeks depending on the variety!

Thanks for this video, I'm happy to know I'm doing one thing in life right! I'm spoiled, my wonderful neighbor grows an amazing garden for us neighbors. I go and pick lettuce, wash, store it, and it lasts two weeks! I love to be able to put some of his other fresh veggies in those salads, too!

Your head lettuce is just beautiful! I grow green leaf lettuce in large pots on my patio, and let a few of them go to seed every year. They get tall with pretty yellow flowers, and the following year I have new lettuces- who knew? The first time I did it, it was more by accident, and then I grew curious to see whether they would reseed so I just let them go. Thanks for the info on how to properly store lettuce. Your towel method is so much easier than what I had been doing!
