  • If you have a short-haired adventure canine, then you may know that they require a bit more gear than many people expect.
    My oldest dog, Ash, is a bit of a freeze-baby. So, when we go camping, I pack extra layers and a sleeping pad for him, and he also uses the Ruffwear Highlands Dog Sleeping Bag.
    Although Ash can't review the bag himself, I can say that he stays warm, enjoys curling up inside the sleeping bag, and uses the bag in his regular life. As his human, it is packable enough for my purposes, is made from durable materials, and serves our purposes quite well.
    In this review, I overview my thoughts after using the Ruffwear Highlands Sleeping Bag, some pros and cons, and our standard sustainability score for the brand.

    Well, yeah, Eurohounds and short-haired Alaskan sled dogs still need to wear those parkas from Non-stop and Hurtta. Forgetting some other popular brands that you can pick in Nordic countries for sprinting sled dogs that have Salukis and German Short-haired Pointers in them.

      There's also a Norwegian breed known as Greyster, a cross between greyhound or saluki with German Short-haired Pointers for sledding as well, I believe

      I have seen those mixes! I'd love to have one for bikejoring in the future. And the jackets from Non-stop and Hurtta are AMAZING. I love GSPs so much but they need so much cold weather gear! haha

      @theoutdoorminimalist Still trying to figure out if Zarya needs a sleeping bag and a parka for the Great Divide Trail thru-hike. Pavel didn't need one, but he definitely needed a rainjacket when he developed hot spots on his back where curled tail touched.

      @@ZaryaTheLaika Does Zarya use a sleeping bag when you backpack already?

      @theoutdoorminimalist Not really.
      But here's why I am pondering: GDTA says to pack for -5C, S&R says -7C and gear reviewers say -12C because not all manufacturers are honest about the difference between comfort ratings and emergency ratings (apparently EnlightenedEquipment is notorious for this). Doesn't really help we get +40C summers as well.
      Double-coated or not, most dogs don't handle huge temperature swings well.
