Thanks Josh. FYI everyone - ForScore is terrible about providing error messages. So if it crashes during the archive process it means you do not have enough storage. Delete some items on your device and try again.
Never saw the exported Forscore file from old iPad to iCloud; and yes I have enough space. These steps work great if there are no "bugs" in your process. Thx.
Hey Josh, I have an odd situation. I have a back up iPad which I have incase my first one goes out. If I have a gig and my first one goes on the blink I have to have a backup. When I back up my "backup" iPad all of my scores are out of order??? I have then arranged numerically only because it is easier to add them without typing the long name of the pieces. I keep a separate spread sheet which is alphabetical to find a piece. This probably sounds a bit odd but I'm working with over 500 scores. My original iPad is prefect. When I add a piece it goes in the last place numerically. Put the pieces are all out of order on the new iPad I restored my backup to?? I can't even figure out a way to "sort" the files to put them back in order. I've tried delegating the whole app and starting over with a new backup file. no luck. I have backed everything up the proper way and restored the way you have shown. It works great...but out of order. Its not a big issue right now but if something happens to my original iPad I'm a bit sunk. I'm getting ready to travel shortly and my original iPad is going with me. Just hope nothing happens to it until I can figure this out. I've tried reaching out to forscore support but got nothing back. Sorry for the long message but no where else to turn. Thanks for listening.
@@mpeltz1534 Hey Morris, sorry to hear of your frustrations! Let's see what we can do... just so I understand you situation, does it still not organize it when you are looking at your library or in your setlist, does it not change when you tap on "Title" vs. "Newest" (in the library) or "Manual" (in the setlist)? The options should be at the top when you're in one of those menus, if I understand your description correctly.
Thank you so much for your reply Josh. It’s actually an even more interesting issue as I have gotten into this. I figured out a “workaround” for my scores being out of order. Using the “ search” feature gives me pretty quick access to my scores but I realized a new issue. My scores didn’t come over completely annotated. In most cases they were not cropped, and a lot of the annotation marks I had made were pretty messed up. I was very surprised that this method of transferring my data from a backup file didn’t work correctly? I made sure to back up as an “archive” and did everything as I was supposed to with the restore process. I ended up completely erasing the new iPad and using the “new iPad transfer” method which brought over all the annotated scores correctly but still out of order. Like I said, I can deal with them out of order at this point. It makes me concerned about the ability to use the forScore backup function? Have you had any issues like this when you restored files from your backup? I have been using forScore for many years now and love it. I have always backed up my files the way you have demonstrated but never actually tried to restore them until now. I was very surprised at the results. Anxious to hear what you have found. Thank you again for reaching out and taking the time to help. Keep up the great work with your videos. P.S. A little extra info. I used airdrop to transfer the files from forScore. Perhaps that was the issue?? I haven't tried it any other way.
Aug 29 2024. It looks like the archive was created but when I use the services:upload:backups and select the new archive to be saved to my Google drive, I get the 'working spiral for about 15 seconds. But when I go to my laptop to see if the file is indeed on Google drive, it is NOT there... ideas?
Your videos are so helpful ~ thank you! I want to create a backup folder where I can open the individual files that I've scanned into Forscore on my PC, but so far I've only been able to create backups that require using Forscore to open the entire archive... Is there a way to have all the Forscore files each saved in pdf format into a folder?
Great information. Thank you for sharing. Can the backup & restores be made using an external drive? I have a 2 TB SSD drive where I like to dump things from my iPad. I’m pretty sure the backup would work but not sure using it to restore the files would be as easy…
Yes, so long as you have a way to transfer it off the iPad and then later off the external device back to the iPad. When you are in the Backup menu in forScore, you can swipe to the left and choose the “share” button. That should allow you to move it where you would like it. Or if that doesn’t work, while you are in the files app on your iPad, find the file and transfer it that way. Email could work if the files was small enough. Hope that helps!
Thanks for this info, Josh! Do you recommend (or have you tried) the forScore backup utility where you plug in the ipad to the computer and save that way?
I actually haven’t done it that way, so I can’t speak to it much. The reason I prefer saving it to the cloud is so that 1) you can always access it (in case your computer isn’t with you) and 2) so in case something happens to your computer. But saving it in as many places as possible isn’t a bad thing so you could always save it to the cloud and to your computer!
If you restore the files on the new iPad and you already have forScore and scores on the new iPad will it overwrite them or do I need to first delete the files from the new iPad? I don’t want the scores that are on the new iPad so I actually want to overwrite them.
On the Sync to iCloud keep getting error code "Could note be enabled could determine device/server"? Again, when a "bug" pops up, many instructions don't work but thx anyway.
Hi Josh and all, a question, I just upgrade to the new ipad. Everything went well until when I restored the archived file. I realized that my crop scores are not recorded well in the archived file, it leads to a messy annotation. Did you experience it before? I tried to restore the file a couple more times. But the result is the same. So it might be the archived file that contained some errors. Unfortunately, the old ipad is being formatted so I can't make a new backup. Any suggestions are very welcome. Happy New Year all!
when you archive your files manually into icloud, will the annotations show up in icloud too or just the score (without annotations)? Also, is it ok to archive each score one at a time into icloud as you receive them or is it better to wait until you have several scores to archive at once...or does it not matter? Thanks!
I got stuck on saving the archive to icloud or dropbox. I pressed save, but when I checked icloud and dropbox, they were empty (the file folder was there, but empty contents). thoughts?
Still having trouble? Sorry it’s taken a while to get back to you. My first thought is how big is your archive? Is it so large that it wouldn’t fit? How much available space do you have on iCloud or Dropbox? Another issue might be internet connectivity. I know sometimes forScore doesn’t finish uploading or has an issue but doesn’t warn about it.
I do not. I just lower the brightness of the iPad screen itself by swiping down from the top right to change the brightness settings. Bright enough to see the screen, but not so bright that it hurts my eyes or has a glare on my face.
My understanding is that it does not overwrite your existing scores. I haven’t tried it myself, but in another comment on this video I was talking with someone that tried this and they said the old library was still there.
Thanks
Thank you so much! I'm glad it was helpful, and I truly appreciate your support!
My band mates just talked me into going all digital. I’ve watched a lot of TH-cam videos on ForScore and yours are the best. Thank you!
Great to hear! Glad to hear they've all been so helpful!

I have it set to "Sync with iCloud". But when I try to look for the file, where do I exactly go in iCloud to find the backup file? Thanks.

I'm actually not sure, to be honest... Have you done it yet to see what happens? I'm curios myself now!
Answer to this issue. No you can’t overwrite the scores. I tried this and it does nothing. You need to start with a blank slate.
On the Sync to iCloud keep getting error code "Could note be enabled could determine device/server"? Again, when a "bug" pops up, many instructions don't work but thx anyway.

@@Josh-Ring It worked, no worries and thanks for your help!
Do you have a cover that allows the brightness not to glow your face when performing?
I do not. I just lower the brightness of the iPad screen itself by swiping down from the top right to change the brightness settings. Bright enough to see the screen, but not so bright that it hurts my eyes or has a glare on my face.
Question: Does a backup replace the library on an existing device, or add to it?
I see another comment that suggests id does. Can you make a video for sharing a setlist with colleagues?
My understanding is that it does not overwrite your existing scores. I haven’t tried it myself, but in another comment on this video I was talking with someone that tried this and they said the old library was still there.
@@Josh-Ring Yes my old library still there; this process works only with a clean new iPad
