The first part of my forScore mini series where I dive deep into specific features of forScore, my favorite app for reading music on the iPad. In this video I cover everything from how to enter annotation mode to how to best utilize the tools at our disposal. ForScore has everything you need to mark up your score cleanly and colorfully.
I show you how to use Stamps and Shapes and how to change their color and size, how to make different Markers and Highlighters and how you might use a variety of colors and shadings (including using the color white to “erase” on the PDF score), how to use the Ruler, Select, Erase, and Clear, and even how to utilize Layers to maximize your Annotation power. Don't forget, with an Apple Pencil 2, you can double tap the side to switch between your current tool and the Eraser.
Don’t forget to check out my other videos diving deeper into other specific topics, such as:

This video was very helpful. The only thing I absolutely couldn't figure out from your video was - After typing text and getting out of keyboard mode, how do I grab the text, move it and modify it?? Thanks in advance!
When you enter annotation mode, the text will have a circle on each side. The left circle will let you move the text if you tap and hold on it. To modify the text, tap in the middle of the text (still in annotation mode) and the left circle will disappear, but the right circle will now have three horizontal dots in it. Tap on those 3 dots and a menu will pop up with Format as an option, which will allow you to modify/edit the font, size, color, etc.
Hope that helps!
Thanks for explaining how to move the toolbar. That's the exact thing I got on TH-cam to look for. But now I'm going to watch the rest of your video before I go back to annotating.
Great to hear - I’m glad it was helpful! Be sure to watch my other forScore videos for other tips that may help!
Perfect. I am going through all your forscore videos. reat that you made several so you can spend more time on certain areas.
Glad you like them, and great to hear how helpful they are for you!
Oops, never mind. Your video explains how to rotate the ruler. Very cool!
Glad you got it figured out!
thx Josh, very succinct and super helpful. What I find myself wishing for (nothing's ever perfect is it!!:)) is a mode where instead of having to go into the 'shapes' tool to get nice looking lines/boxes etc, I could just freehand draw what looks like a straight-ish line and For Score will interpret this and turn it into a straight line, like Markup. I often like to underline things, or double underline. Or perhaps having the ability to have more than one of the shapes instantly available.
Thanks! I really appreciate that!
I agree. I also use Notability, which has great drawing abilities. I often wish forScore would have the same great features.
Very insightful and useful. Thank you.
Thanks! Glad it was helpful!
Very helpful. I've been wondering how to put text into scores, instead of my terrible scribble.
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent tutorial. Thanks.
You're welcome! Glad to hear it was helpful!
Nice. Thank you!

Thanks!
No problem! Glad it helped!
When I tap at the top of the screen I do not have the wiggle next to the magnifying glass. Can you please tell me how to make it appear?
Also, in text mode I accidentally tap in various places, so then I have a lot of circles for text boxes that I do not know how to delete.
Thank you for your Video and your help. 👍
If you can't see anything next to the magnifying glass (the search button), then you'll likely need to turn your iPad 90° to horizontal mode. That button disappears in the vertical orientation.
If you see something next to the magnifying glass but it's not the squiggle to activate annotation mode, then you can tap and hold on that button - a menu will appear for different options to set that button.
To delete all the circles from the text boxes, then you'll need to enter Text mode and tap in the rectangle between the two circles. Once you've activated the ability to enter text, then three dots will appear in the right-most circle. Tap on the three dots and then select Delete.
Hope that helps! And than you so much, I'm glad the videos have been helpful!
Josh, I use annotation stamps to add LH Fingerings to my guitar tablature. Is there a method for changing the font. Something like Arial would be easier to read.
Excellent video, thanks! I have used the ruler in an earlier version of forScore, but now I use 14.0.3 and the ruler is slanted diagonally. Any way to fix that?
Thank you!
Hey, Josh! Thanks for such superb tutorials - suscribed! One question - is there a way to quickly find scores that have annotations on them? I am annotating during rehearsals and then struggling to find the scores I annotated in my library.
Unfortunately not super easily, at least not that I know of. One option is to change the Tag or Genres or Labels or Reference (the Metadata in the Properties panel) to be a system to indicate if a score has been annotated. Would that work?
@@Josh-Ring hey, great tip! I did something similar by using the "Flag" function on annotated scores at rehearsal this weekend. It worked well enough! Thank you for your advice!
@jcblackhat great idea! If you do that a lot, have you set up a “Gesture” for it? You could have 2-3 fingers tap or hold to create it quickly for you.
Very helpful. I'm new to forScore and I'm wondering if there is a good way to exit annotation mode. When I click on the check mark, it looks like it's not in annotation mode, but when I touch the screen to get the main menu back, it puts me back in annotation mode. How do I REALLY get out of it?? Thanks.
Are you using an Apple Pencil to touch the screen after exiting out of annotation mode? That check mark is the way to truly exit annotation mode, but if you’re using an Apple Pencil, forScore has a setting to automatically enter annotation mode when tapping with an Apple Pencil.
Or you should check your Gestures under Settings to see what “multiple finger” tap or “press and hold” Gestures you have set. You might accidentally be activating a Gesture to enter annotation mode.
Is fourscore expensive.? Does it allow you to attach an MPs recoding so you can play along? Or record yourself to check your progress?
ForScore is currently $20, but it's well worth the price: apps.apple.com/us/app/forscore/id363738376?ign-mpt=uo%3D4
In this video, I explain at 4:11 how to attach MP3s to a score so you can play along: th-cam.com/video/mAMXv7Fcj7M/w-d-xo.html
For recording yourself, I personally just use the Voice Memo app on my phone or the iPad. This can also then be shared and attached to a score in forScore if you wanted to keep a record that way.
Hope that helps!
Does it scan the music sheet and save it to the set list? Thanks
Yes! If you watch my other video on organization (forScore: Optimal Organization
th-cam.com/video/dfJLrr30EpY/w-d-xo.html) I talk about how to scan music, and how to add scores to setlists. Hope it helps!
Yet… We still can’t draw a line that straightens itself automatically if we hold it for a second… being able to add straight lines easy or other shapes would be very useful - Easily done it Notability and Goodnotes
Exactly! I hope some of the features in apps like Notability make their way to forScore soon!
I am new to ForScore and I have been annotating fingerings onto some scores. Anytime I share to a PDF for printing (or saving), the annotations disappear. Any thoughts on this?
When you choose to share a score, the first options are "PDF", "Annotated PDF", and "4SC". I'm guessing PDF is the option you're choosing, but the "Annotated PDF" option is the one you'll want to share your annotations. The 4SC is a forScore file, which means if you share it with another forScore user, they'll be able to erase/edit your annotations. The "Annotations PDF" option saves the annotations permanently on the PDF.
@@Josh-Ring thanks Josh! I figured that it was a simple over site on my part.
Great video, Josh. When you’re entering text, are you limited to the colors in the provided colored circles, or can you customize the font color like you can with stamps, shapes and pens?
Thanks! And as far as I know, you are unfortunately limited to the colors in the circles when working with text.

Nicely explained, but is there an equivalent Android version for forScore?
Unfortunately they only make forScore available on iOS and macOS
When I tried to download your free guide I got a microsoft warning was unsafe. FYI
Thanks for letting me know! I appreciate it.
Since I do this on the side with no income coming in yet, I have to use free options to send the guides for now. =)
