    I love the clear way you explain Forscore. Many presenters spent so fast, the understanding is lessened. Your good diction and not "racing" I was able to understand completely the first time! Thank you! You are a fine musician, and maybe that's the reason it's your instructions are so clear, because you actually use the tools you talk about. I wish you of someone would explain the steps of getting that PDF file to the iPad in Forscore! I have PDF scores on my Mac but have trouble getting them into Forscore. It is a simply step missing from Videos.

    when you archive your files manually into icloud, will the annotations show up in icloud too or just the score (without annotations)? Also, is it ok to archive each score one at a time into icloud as you receive them or is it better to wait until you have several scores to archive at once...or does it not matter? Thanks!

    Thanks for the suggestions and help. I have a problem using finger taps to turn pages. Sometimes the tablet goes blank and off when I tap the screen. Happened shortly after I started using during a service and now scared to use during church. I do have the gestures, but sometimes I still tap for page turns.(Haven't broke the habit of licking the finger before the page turn!) Not sure if this is a from Apple of ForScore. Thanks for any help.

    • @Josh-Ring
      @Josh-Ring หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry to hear that! That’s quite frustrating. To help, are you using Performance Mode? That prevents you from seeing the tool bar (which avoid accidentally opening that when you meant to turn a page during a performance). Or in forScore’s settings, do you have Auto-Lock turned OFF? This overrides the iPads sleep function. Keeping this OFF will keep the screen on whenever forScore is open.

    This video was very helpful. The only thing I absolutely couldn't figure out from your video was - After typing text and getting out of keyboard mode, how do I grab the text, move it and modify it?? Thanks in advance!

    • @Josh-Ring
      @Josh-Ring 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      When you enter annotation mode, the text will have a circle on each side. The left circle will let you move the text if you tap and hold on it. To modify the text, tap in the middle of the text (still in annotation mode) and the left circle will disappear, but the right circle will now have three horizontal dots in it. Tap on those 3 dots and a menu will pop up with Format as an option, which will allow you to modify/edit the font, size, color, etc. Hope that helps!

    • @Josh-Ring
      @Josh-Ring 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      When in a Setlist, tapping and holding *should work but I also struggle to get it to work that way half the time. Instead, if you tap on Edit at the top right of the Setlist, three horizontal lines will appear at the right of each song. Tap and Hold on the 3 lines to move a song up or down in the list. I find this way works much better. Hope that helps!

    If you have to play outside, I would add another 'must' for an iPad: an anti-glare screen film. In bright light, it takes you from almost unreadable to perfectly serviceable. At the same time, the battery pack is a must as the screen will be at max brightness the whole time. I have used a whole battery in one concert finishing on 3%! One more thing is beware of temperature - in bright sun, the iPad can overheat and switch off mid gig. It happened to me but, fortunately, I was one of two bari saxes playing (sax octet) so could share his sheet music..... Cheers!

    • @Josh-Ring
      @Josh-Ring 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh, good call! I rarely play outside so I didn’t even think of that. Do you have an anti-glare screen film you’d recommend? Thank you for your ideas!

    • @matthewrayner3793

      @@Josh-Ring Sorry, no. Just a google and picked the one that looked reasonable! I've not got the original packing anymore. FYI, I use the half page turn and, as I play standing up most of the time, I always angle the pedal so that the 'next page' paddle is nearest to me. When you go for the turn, you know you are going to hit the right one. Of course, there is always when you accidentally press it twice... 🤣

    Very helpful. I'm new to forScore and I'm wondering if there is a good way to exit annotation mode. When I click on the check mark, it looks like it's not in annotation mode, but when I touch the screen to get the main menu back, it puts me back in annotation mode. How do I REALLY get out of it?? Thanks.

    • @Josh-Ring
      @Josh-Ring 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Are you using an Apple Pencil to touch the screen after exiting out of annotation mode? That check mark is the way to truly exit annotation mode, but if you’re using an Apple Pencil, forScore has a setting to automatically enter annotation mode when tapping with an Apple Pencil. Or you should check your Gestures under Settings to see what “multiple finger” tap or “press and hold” Gestures you have set. You might accidentally be activating a Gesture to enter annotation mode.

    I am new to ForScore and I have been annotating fingerings onto some scores. Anytime I share to a PDF for printing (or saving), the annotations disappear. Any thoughts on this?

    • @Josh-Ring
      @Josh-Ring 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      When you choose to share a score, the first options are "PDF", "Annotated PDF", and "4SC". I'm guessing PDF is the option you're choosing, but the "Annotated PDF" option is the one you'll want to share your annotations. The 4SC is a forScore file, which means if you share it with another forScore user, they'll be able to erase/edit your annotations. The "Annotations PDF" option saves the annotations permanently on the PDF.

      Thanks, so glad it was helpful! If price isn’t an issue, definitely go with the latest iPad Pro 13-inch (M4 chip) amzn.to/4eqCXZG If that’s too expensive, the 13-inch iPad Air (M2 chip) is also great: amzn.to/3KL5xHJ For just forScore, I don’t think you need a giant hard drive. FYI, Apple Pencil 2nd Gen won't work with the latest iPad Pro (M4) and Air (M2) models and require the Apple Pencil Pro because of the redesigned front camera layout.

    Pageflip butterfly pageturner is my favourite now after using airturn. Compared to airturn my experience is more stable connection with iPad and more solid design using pageflip butterfly.

      amzn.to/3x6Sv45 ^ is this the one you have? This would be my other recommendation for sure. Def a great design and very compact! My main reason for liking the AirTurn more was the Butterfly felt more like a button I had to press, whereas the AirTurn feels more like it senses the compression/flex movement. I’m curious, do you mind if I ask what kind of connection issues you had with your AirTurn? I’ve been using them since 2013 and have never had an issue. The old design was a little clunky in terms of one button controlling everything (I hated turning it off without accidentally resetting it 😂) and the cables weren’t as strong as the DUO500.

      @@Josh-Ring Yes, this is the model I'm using. And regarding your experience with AirTurn where it feels more like it senses the compression/flex movement, I would say that the Pageflip is giving this same experience. For now anyway, I do like to use the PageFlip. I also did some try out with boss fs-1-wl but on stage it turned out that the buttons are to small to accurately press the right button. For home / studio practise it is ok but not for stage performance. And well, it is all about preference. If you like AirTurn and it works for you, just stick with it :-)

      Watch out for Apple Pencil compatibility! If you have a newer iPad, turns out the 2nd Gen Apple Pencil might not be compatible, so the Apple Pencil Pro might be necessary after all. Check for Apple’s compatibility here: support.apple.com/en-us/108937

    Thanks for this info, Josh! Do you recommend (or have you tried) the forScore backup utility where you plug in the ipad to the computer and save that way?

    • @Josh-Ring
      @Josh-Ring 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I actually haven’t done it that way, so I can’t speak to it much. The reason I prefer saving it to the cloud is so that 1) you can always access it (in case your computer isn’t with you) and 2) so in case something happens to your computer. But saving it in as many places as possible isn’t a bad thing so you could always save it to the cloud and to your computer!

    Great video - very informative. Possibly it’s on the list you mention but - at least for those of us on the other side of the pond (UK and Ireland) - the one traditional song that I was given as an example of 6/8 is “My bonnie lies over the ocean, my bonnie lies over the sea..”.

    Someone that doesn't know about music theory here, isn't 3/4 and 6/8 sort-of the same thing? Couldn't a composer decide that one of his 3/4 pieces is 6/8 and be technically correct? Edit: thanks for the answers!

    • @TheJumboBurrito
      @TheJumboBurrito 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      meter is your answer here. for example, a song in 3/4 is usually felt as 3 quarter notes, which can be further subdivided into 3 groups of 2 eighth notes. 6/8 is usually meant to show 2 groups of 3 eighth notes. the difference can be felt by comparing a waltz time vs a song like “maggot brain” by funkadelic. in the former, you can feel the three separate pulses. in the latter, there are only two. so technically, they can represent the same music (6/8 can also show the same feel as 3/4), but 6/8 allows clarity in representing 2 groups of 3 rather than 3 groups of 2. hope that helps

    • @Josh-Ring
      @Josh-Ring 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Often times too, the harmony will match up with the downbeats. Not always, but a composer will often have the chord changes match up with the downbeat. And yes, as the others have comments one m. of 3/4 will often have 3 stronger pulses (3 quarter notes as beats), where 6/8 will more often have only 2 stronger pulses (the 2 dotted-quarters as beats). Technically the 3/4 still does have 6 8ths, but the emPHAsis is on a different syLLAble =)

    • @Tr0lliPop
      @Tr0lliPop 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ohh, that makes sense now. So 3/4, 3 points of emphasis, 6/8, 2 points of emphasis.. I was thinking of the song meter as too objective of a thing, like "this song is objectively 3/4 and cannot possibly be considered 6/8" when that doesn't seem to be the case from what I gather. Thank you everyone for answering!
