Actually if you saw the water suddenly drain out of the bay, then you are going to have problems. There are some films of the 1964 Alaskan earthquake that showed Valdez Harbor emptying of water and the tsunami rushing back in.

Actually what is not being said is that on the coast and coastal low lands, the ocean will rush in immediately due to the land mass dropping and the tsunami will follow some minutes later, but by then many will have already died. Not being said cuz you don't want to kill the tourist business and home sales.

I grew up in anchorage and was outside playing on my sled at the time of the big earthquake.4th and 5th Ave downtown streets crumbled and split, jc pennys on 5th Ave and several bars on 4th Ave. lost their buildings and cars when streets opened and split. Our earthquake registered 9.2 and rocked in two directions which causes more damage, we had multiple and significant after shocks several months following the big one..Turnagun arms a neighborhood with high end homes overlooking the inlet literally disappeared.Depending what area you lived in determined the extent of damage done to homes ,streets etc. The area where we lived which was close to Lake Otis had minimal damage, we were more fortunate than many others. That day and many days and months following will forever be ingrained into my mind.

Does the recurring seismic activity off the Oregon Coast have anything to do with the excessive roadway sinking on Coastal Highway 101 in the area of Beverly Beach just north of Newport ??
It seems that the Oregon Department of Transportation has over many YEARS dumped huge amounts of asphalt in an attempt to remedy these areas of significantly sunken roadway.

Ya know what's grand about knowledge...sharing it, learning it and when we actually "invest" in applying it. The 230,000 lives lost (2004)...the average person, a receding ocean is not something to wonder about, an op to collect free sea food...but a heads up to head for higher ground. For multitude of nations not to have an organized warning system, even the most primitive is unconscionable.
