After watching your videos I bought speedskim 1.2m and also 0.6m. I mananaged to plaster 4 walls now. I am proud of myself and happy, it saved myself 350£ labour costs. I use 0.6m both blades stainless and plastic. Stainless use more often as it leaves better finish I just like it more. Walls are so uneven so I tend to use 0.6m way more often. Thanks for showing your techniques. Thumbs UP!
A really excellent video. I’ve just removed a really old gas boiler which left a huge flue hole in the wall. I’ve bricked it up, but need to pack the wall out to make it level with the existing plaster. About 13mm. So thanks to your video I know which product to use and how to prepare the surface prior to applying it. Anyone involved in teaching, from early years to university lecturers could learn something from your style of presentation. You provide information in a straight-forward and understandable way. My old mans training me to paster.we use all kinds of plaster.we venetian plaster.lime render.cornice work.ive seen a lot of videos that just was not correct.and cut corners.but you teach exactly like my old man.quality work
After leaving the army a few years ago I joined the family business fitting bathrooms but relying on so many people ( plasterers,tilers,electricians,vinyl floor layers) I decided to knock it on the head and just learn the plastering side. Usually dry lining walls and plaster a ceiling. Unfortunately it’s only a few days a week actually plastering due to it being mainly small bathrooms. I feel like need to be doing more than a few days a week to master the skill and be confident in taking my own jobs on eventually. These videos are great and a real good source of information for me I can still learn even though I only pick up a trowl 2 or 3 times a week. Keep up the good work subscribed!!
Hi James - great hearing from you. It can be tough when all you want is experience. It's often hard to progress if you're feeling like you need more time on the trowel. Great job,I have hand issues so I have to work in small pieces. So I taped and went all around the edges and line. Day 2 I filled in large gaps, day 3 did a lower section and today hopefully the upper and corner sections. Hoping by tomorrow to get to finish it to pain. Its hard with bad hands but I love the creativity of it and how it changes and brings the wall back to a good life. Keep sharing, great stuff. Blessings.
My mate did some plastering for me. Some emulsioned walls and a previously artexed ceiling. He gave me this tin of sort of greenish blue paint that was really gritty and said put a coating of this on and I'll be round to skim for you.

A point about the no-go’s. Back in the day when I started DIY plastering I turned a doorway into a plastered frame. I actually scrimmed and pva’d the wooden frame underneath where the architraves used to be. Then applied multifinish up to the angle beads and it worked perfectly. No cracking at all and still perfect when I sold the house 6 years later. Just thought I’d mention it. Maybe as a beginner I didn’t know better and was just lucky? 🤷♂️
With regards to the door frame, I reckon if you’d have SBR’d it then taped over the top, then SBR’d again. That SBR is amazing stuff. Provides a complete barrier and plaster really sticks to it.
@@PlasteringForBeginners I don't even use pva now, after plastering on artex with it a couple of times it just sucked the moisture out the plaster, nightmare. SBR is a must now, it's so much better.
Great video. After watching this I'm going to get a feather edge & bondit as those sound like the things I'm missing! It also gave me confidence when I come to doing it myself.

Very good tutorial very informative thank you unfortunately I I didn't see it until after I made all the mistakes the biggest being not using PVA fortunately it's only a small area so wont take long to rectify the cracking!!

From what I remember hardwall is used on high impact areas such as high traffic places like flats only used it a couple of times cant remember what finish I used over it but that was high impact aswell👍
Yeah it's definitely a stronger product and lovely to finish on - it just has a very high rate of suction which is shy it's ideal for float and set plastering!
Great videos and thanks for all you help and advise. I have found that if they have used a modern tiling adhesive that you can use a wallpaper steamer and literally scrap it off. Give it a go doesn’t work on really old plastered tiles though.

"PVA everything" you might have saved my life. I've plastered a few walls in my house and really really struggle with the final plastering coat. It just dries as I apply it and I end up with a water spray in one hand and the float in the other and it is still really hard work as the water just keeps getting sucked out of it. I've watched other videos and just couldn't understand how the plaster stayed workable for such a long time. I will PVA the lot next time. I have a big stud wall to skim at the weekend so fingers crossed.
Ha yeah PVA everything pal and if your not sure do it again. Its needed with plastering - it's stressful enough without it setting like fire ha! Good luck with your wall pal and if was great hearing from you 👍

Very useful vid - I have a chimney breast that has the very 1980s decorative stippling and has also been painted. What would be the best way to prepare this surface? Would I need to go through the pain of completely removing the stippling, or would it be possible to simply knock off the high points? Does a painted surface need to be treated in some way?
Haha thank you pal!! Laths are very thin pieces of wood which means the rate of suction isn't as high compared to thick timber. The thicker the timber the more moisture it will pull from the plaster. Backing plasters can take a bit of suction but not too much. I've plastered onto a timber column in the past and it cracked both coats of plaster right through. The way around it is by using EML (wire mesh) onto the timber beforehand. This will stop your timber from cracking - that's how it's done pal 👍
We usually opt to use a scutch chisel / toothed bolster chisel (Using 2lb club hammer) to remove the thinnest possible layer where tile adhesive, etc. need stripping back, but everything else is pretty much the methods we use on site :-) Nice job and great instruction :-)
Blaine I’m wondering why u apply the pva with ur water brush and not a roller is there any particular reason for this mate or is it just a case of that would just b another tool Ude have to lug about
I have walls that have been chased out for pipe work and electrics. Would there be anything wrong to bond then up. Trowel it back so it is a few millimetres shallower than the skim and then multi finish flush with the original plaster?
Looking good! Amazing to see a plasterer work pretty much the same way I was shown years ago! Only thing I do different is devil float. Is it just bonding you don't float up cause I've heard alot of lads won't float bonding but will browing and hardwall. What do you think?
Hi mate great to hear from you. I only had a tight coat of Bonding so it hardly seems worth it but to be fair I could have put a scratch on. It wouldn't have done it harm so I'll consider it next time. Thanks for the feedback 👍
You say PVA everything. Is this the same in an old stone house where lime has been used and will be used to replaster. Obviously the walls need to breath. Thanks for your videos.
Hi mate. It sounds like you'll have to use lime based plaster - it's the only way to keep the house breathable. Modern plasters aren't destined to be breathable which would ruin the lime based build. That's what I recommend my friend 👍
Ha yeah I suppose you're right. It's a framing Hammer when I'm doing first fix carpentry but I do agree, it is on the large size. Cracking piece of kit though! Cheers
Hi I've got a wall to plaster I've got some PVA to seal it I wondered if there was a way you can stop the plaster drying out so quick.before I put it on but it always seems to dry out quick.? Is there any other tips you could help me with please Thanks
I'm a plasterer, with this shutdown I've got limited supply of multi. I bought a load of one coat to add a 25% ratio to multi. It seemed to work on my kitchen wall as an experiment. But would you recommend a thin neat multi finish 100% 2nd coat ? I know I'm going to get a load of flack in the comment section, but desperate times. I hope I haven't offended any one lol. I wouldn't normally go near this stuff.
Hi mate! It's a good idea to be fair and don't worry about any comments - there's been a massive shortage and I think it's set to continue my friend. I would always recommend the top coat to be pure multi because I just think it leaves a better finish! But that's just me - we have to do what we can. Hope you're coping mate. Thankyou my friend. I've been doing a 3 to 1 ratio on my first coat and topping a 2nd with pure multi. Works a treat, especially over artex. I have achieved a great 3 to 1 finish also over flatter backgrounds as a top coat believe it or not, it works, obviously a little whiter than usual 😉. I have learnt a few things with these different approaches over the last month. But to be honest, some of this I will adopt again when we go back to normal, but ideally, let's get back to normal as soon as possible with predominantly the obligatory two coat multi system and universal one coat only used for what its designed for. Having said that, your video was great in demonstrating how this plaster can be utilised as a serious one coat system in the right hands.. British Gypsum open up shop ASAP.. Thanks for the videos! I'm a bit confused around the advices regarding PVA. You mention it at 12:30 that old boards need to be drenched in PVA otherwise they would suck out the moisture from the plaster. But you are not actually PVA-ing the plasterboard in the video, just straight applying the bond. So when would you apply PVA to plasterboards? I am planning to skimcoat a room, the boards are quite old (ceiling I have put up almost half a year ago now). Here is my plan: - scrimtape the joints, then PVA all surfaces x2 - bond the joints with joint filler, 2 coats - PVA the surface of filled joints, x2 - skim with 2 coats My reasoning: both the old boards and the joint compound can suck moisture out of skim coats, so better to PVA everything twice, does no harm. Is this reasoning correct?
Thanks Blaine, I used 1:5 PVA:water single coat on one wall at the joints and I ended up using the sprayer every 5 minutes... That area was drying out so quickly. It was a race. I hope it won't crack. Next day on the second wall I applied a second coat 1:3 this time and all was well around the joints. Still both layers went off super quick, so I was spraying like a madman. I guess I overestimated how fast I can work and 10m2 is a little too much for me - a beginner. I have a 5m2 area left so I hope to get all stages done properly this time! Thanks for the videos, they are really good resources! I have no idea how I could have skimcoated my walls without these tips.

on a small bit of wood say 600 mm wide i grove it with a chisel then pva , it will not come off . Nice work.

If your planning to skim as bonding is picking up I don't bother with PVA as it's not required for a "key" on to bonding coat.

Another way to get around that door frame problem is render mesh trowelled into the first coat, it has to overlap onto the existing surfaces.

If u pva the tile adhesive first leave for 5mins it’ll scrape off easily

Very useful vid - I have a chimney breast that has the very 1980s decorative stippling and has also been painted. What would be the best way to prepare this surface? Would I need to go through the pain of completely removing the stippling, or would it be possible to simply knock off the high points? Does a painted surface need to be treated in some way?
How quickly do you apply the pva after your first bonding coat?

U the man Blaine but If you can’t bond on to wood how did the old school plasters do it on the slats ?🤔
Haha thank you pal!! Laths are very thin pieces of wood which means the rate of suction isn't as high compared to thick timber. The thicker the timber the more moisture it will pull from the plaster. Backing plasters can take a bit of suction but not too much. I've plastered onto a timber column in the past and it cracked both coats of plaster right through.
The way around it is by using EML (wire mesh) onto the timber beforehand. This will stop your timber from cracking - that's how it's done pal 👍

I want to use the same method for some walls, but what plaster should I use to finish ? Before I can paint on.
We usually opt to use a scutch chisel / toothed bolster chisel (Using 2lb club hammer) to remove the thinnest possible layer where tile adhesive, etc. need stripping back, but everything else is pretty much the methods we use on site :-) Nice job and great instruction :-)

I have walls that have been chased out for pipe work and electrics. Would there be anything wrong to bond then up. Trowel it back so it is a few millimetres shallower than the skim and then multi finish flush with the original plaster?
It's not a problen but I always find there's a faint line on show. I think Easyfill would be better than Finish Plaster my friend 👍
Looking good! Amazing to see a plasterer work pretty much the same way I was shown years ago! Only thing I do different is devil float. Is it just bonding you don't float up cause I've heard alot of lads won't float bonding but will browing and hardwall. What do you think?
Hi mate great to hear from you. I only had a tight coat of Bonding so it hardly seems worth it but to be fair I could have put a scratch on. It wouldn't have done it harm so I'll consider it next time. Thanks for the feedback 👍

You say PVA everything. Is this the same in an old stone house where lime has been used and will be used to replaster. Obviously the walls need to breath. Thanks for your videos.
Hi mate. It sounds like you'll have to use lime based plaster - it's the only way to keep the house breathable. Modern plasters aren't destined to be breathable which would ruin the lime based build. That's what I recommend my friend 👍

Hi I've got a wall to plaster I've got some PVA to seal it I wondered if there was a way you can stop the plaster drying out so quick.before I put it on but it always seems to dry out quick.? Is there any other tips you could help me with please

I'm a plasterer, with this shutdown I've got limited supply of multi. I bought a load of one coat to add a 25% ratio to multi. It seemed to work on my kitchen wall as an experiment. But would you recommend a thin neat multi finish 100% 2nd coat ? I know I'm going to get a load of flack in the comment section, but desperate times. I hope I haven't offended any one lol. I wouldn't normally go near this stuff.
Hi mate! It's a good idea to be fair and don't worry about any comments - there's been a massive shortage and I think it's set to continue my friend. I would always recommend the top coat to be pure multi because I just think it leaves a better finish! But that's just me - we have to do what we can. Hope you're coping mate. Thankyou my friend. I've been doing a 3 to 1 ratio on my first coat and topping a 2nd with pure multi. Works a treat, especially over artex. I have achieved a great 3 to 1 finish also over flatter backgrounds as a top coat believe it or not, it works, obviously a little whiter than usual 😉.
I have learnt a few things with these different approaches over the last month. But to be honest, some of this I will adopt again when we go back to normal, but ideally, let's get back to normal as soon as possible with predominantly the obligatory two coat multi system and universal one coat only used for what its designed for. Having said that, your video was great in demonstrating how this plaster can be utilised as a serious one coat system in the right hands.. British Gypsum open up shop ASAP..

Thanks for the videos! I'm a bit confused around the advices regarding PVA. You mention it at 12:30 that old boards need to be drenched in PVA otherwise they would suck out the moisture from the plaster. But you are not actually PVA-ing the plasterboard in the video, just straight applying the bond. So when would you apply PVA to plasterboards? I am planning to skimcoat a room, the boards are quite old (ceiling I have put up almost half a year ago now). Here is my plan:
- scrimtape the joints, then PVA all surfaces x2
- bond the joints with joint filler, 2 coats
- PVA the surface of filled joints, x2
- skim with 2 coats
My reasoning: both the old boards and the joint compound can suck moisture out of skim coats, so better to PVA everything twice, does no harm. Is this reasoning correct?
Hi mate. You need to PVA old plasterboard - new board is fine to plaster onto which is why I didn't use it. Everything else is right my friend 👍
Thanks Blaine, I used 1:5 PVA:water single coat on one wall at the joints and I ended up using the sprayer every 5 minutes... That area was drying out so quickly. It was a race. I hope it won't crack. Next day on the second wall I applied a second coat 1:3 this time and all was well around the joints. Still both layers went off super quick, so I was spraying like a madman. I guess I overestimated how fast I can work and 10m2 is a little too much for me - a beginner. I have a 5m2 area left so I hope to get all stages done properly this time!
