I have a 2004 Saturn Vue with the 3.5L Honda motor and AWD. It’s 0 to 60 time is quite fast, handles very well, and a hoot to drive, has been extremely reliable, and has not been expensive to maintain. My uncle bought it new, and sold it to me cheap in 2015 because he wanted a Jeep, and they offered a really low trade price. The car had only 114 thousand miles then, and now has only 136 thousand. It still looks great, even the interior looks almost new. Love it dearly! I can’t figure out how the instrument cluster is white in the daytime, but black at night? Some kind of magic going on there!

I owned a 2004 Saturn VUE, bought new. Had to get rid of it because where I live they use salt to treat the roads and the front end was severely rusted.
Broke my heart to get rid of it because the rest of the car was still fine. Probably the best car I ever owned! Miss my VUE.

I had a saturn ion, had the manual transmission, sold it to my brother with 273,00 miles on it after he wrecked his car and needed something until the insurance settled. That car was fun to drive, and the plastic body parts didn't rust. I think i see it running around town, ya don't see a lot of them. I love it when you buy these old blasts from the past. G-d bless.

Both those bumpers are repairable .
Remove the rear bumper and heat it up from behind with a heat gun in the affected area.
You should be able to get most of it back into shape, then it’s up to you if you want to refinish the exterior face of the bumper with some sort of flexible ‘Bondo’
The front one can also be plastic welded from behind & refinished, but I guess it depends whether you actually want to spend time doing the repairs rather than spending a small fortune buying replacement panels.

I bought a 2005 ION3 and loved it. Simple, noisy and plastic everywhere. My oldest got it with 225K and drove it through college till he was rear ended and insurance totaled it. 38mpg all day, every day. It wasn’t without its flaws though. 3rd gear synchro went out and we did a scrap yard swap and new clutch. Loved that 5 speed manual. Suspension components in the front all died by 60K and it ate ignition cylinders annually. Saturn replaced 2 under warranty and I did another 3. It also ate coil packs which are all 4 in one unit. Easy to work on and fun to drive.

Nice to see the REDLINE getting some love.
I Still have my 2004 Ion Redline. 200,000 mile strong and I love it. I am retiring it next year from a daily driver to be my project upgrade restoration. Mine is Black. I have been looking for that Stage 2 Supercharger upgrade for years now. Cant find it anywhere.
    Notes:
    - My electric stealing never had any issues
    - The Grill was an accessory add on, it didn't come stock for some reason. I do have the Grill
    - Sadly, parts are hard to come by. I have thought about buying a used beat up one just to have a parts car.
    - The window wiper trim did that to mine too, i had to replace them
    - I LOVE the gages in the center
    - Having the battery in the trunk is awesome. Able to jump from front or back, easy to add a sub woofer and the battery is protected and nice to have the space it opens under the hood.
    - The audio cabling is messed up in the car. I took the amp out and just have a better head unit. I had to bridge and splice. I still have the audio wiring diagram if you want to do some upgrades. I can send it to you.
Ill be following your restoration on this. Thanks for showing the Redline in the spotlight again.

So happy to see somebody, anybody pay these cars some respect! I absolutely love mine! I saw one at the Dayton Auto Show in like 03' I think, not on sale yet, and instantly fell hard! I bought mine new in Oct. 04' and it's been my little go-kart of a car ever since. I was 24 and just out of school and just had to have one! It just has a personality and it's so weird it was a perfect fit for me! I grew up a proper gearhead. My folks had their own toys. Dad had a Corvette and my mom had a very clean ragtop Beetle. This Saturn was my daily for years, but now it's lovingly garage kept and still very clean. I've really just done regular maintenance, brakes, suspension, and oil changes. It does have a nice stainless cat-back exhaust and a CAI. Front stabilizer end links are a common issue, those were replaced. Intercooler pump replaced, and it will soon need a clutch, but it's very much my baby, LOL. I've had it for nearly 20 years and with just shy of 80k original miles I plan to have may more good times with this car! Such a sleeper and soooo unique! Enjoy yours, good sir! =)

The biggest failure I'd seen in one was a motor home was flat towing one... in first gear, talk about completely cratering the engine and transmission, easily 1/3 of the engine and tranny was missing, scattered along some road around Tulsa around 2000.

If it have Saab FM55/57 5-speed manual, the clutch is also big problem on Saab. Pressure plate do not have enough clamping force, so the disk slips. Good upgrade is OG9-5 Aero (240mm) clutch kit, it have same disk but pressure plate have much more clamping force. It is plug&play install (If have singe-mass flywheel, dual mass not) and can handle over 450Nm of torque (stock low pressure models "small" clutch" can only handle 300Nm, 2.0T Aero "Big Clutch" around 330-340Nm which is also too weak simple ecu tune).

I married into an Ion coupe, 2006 model? The radio was replaced at every oil change as the clock would always drift. GM claimed the problem was fixed on each new radio, but it never worked out. The driver's side carpet would also have several inches of water after every rainstorm. I checked every drain line for the sunroof and finally found one that was never routed outside of the car.
The gas mileage was not bad, but it wasn't great. I'm sure being automatic did not help.
The car was traded in for a Honda Crosstour, nearly twice the car in all aspects (size, comfort, handling) and better mileage!

The seats were very snug like Recaro's but it needed an extra 2+ inches on the lower seat to make them perfect. Sold it locally to a woman who was selling her 2004 Anniversary GTO. I worked in a Saturn parts dept from 2006 to 2010. Steering column motors and ignition switches were probably the two most common failures in the Ion. Also, the competition package Ion Redline had a lsd, which was great untill you holeshoted the car too hard. I saw two come in with the diff pin chucked right through the transaxle.

The most memorable cars that I drove were a 1st gen, possibly 1st year CTS-V at the Orlando show and a Hummer H2 that they built a huge dirt mound for climbing in Tampa. I’m not an off-roader, that hill climb was terrifying.
I did fall in love with that CTS-V.

@@fomocopowersgarage7103 It definitely was! By far the favorite car I drove. If course they had a GM person in the car with my friend an I that took it out and he was pushing me to drive it a lot more aggressively that I wanted to. I ended up stalling it.
My friend that was with me at the time never lets me live that down. I did want to drive the car a bit spiritedly but didn't want to flog the car which is what the GM guy was encouraging me to do.
To this day, I REALLY want a 1st Gen CTS-V. What an awesome car it was!

Been a Saturn devotee since they came out. Owned a '96 twin cam with all available options including the illusive sub woofer. Then owned two LS3 wagons. My favorite was the 2000 in dark green with gold pinstripes and a tan interior. And with the V6 it went like stink! Great cars and a great business model. Gone too soon. I enjoy my almost new Silverado LTZ, but the Saturns were special.

I bought a 2005 Ion redline brand nee red in color. Loved it , used to love beating 350z's which came out in the same time. They also had an option with a factory boost gauge with shift lights. Loved when you open the hood it said GM Performance division and the headlight could be removed with just 2 pins. It was unique in my opinion. All the Saturn window trims would shrink from the sun. Mine had the factory high spoiler.

I have one of these. Same color, same year. Mine however is an inadvertent unicorn. My Father bought it new and basically stuck it in the garage as an occasionally driven plaything. When I bought it, it had 8600 miles on it. Given what I had ended up with without realizing it. I became it's preserver. Currently it has 10,700 miles on it. If you ever want to get the feel for a "new" one. Let me know.

Started with a 2001 Dodge Stratus R/T coupe. Then got the 2008 Cobalt SS T/C. Then a 2014 Fiesta ST. Then a 2018 Focus ST which I'm currently driving.

Great to see this Saturn still running great, why there are not more brands with Honda engines. ( i know they want to use own brands or renault for some reason lol ) anyway i think with new shocks, clutch, parts of interior, you have a good cheap car again. Big Up!

These cars are easy to convert to Turbo and that engine can take a ton of power. There are conversion kits to make a 6 speed too. Saabs shared the same front knuckles too.

I bought an 05 Ion Redline brand new when I got my first job. Mine was black. It was such a blast to drive. I wish that I still had it. If I recall, it used the Getrag Saab gearbox. The engine was a 2.0 supercharged 4 cylinder (rated at 205 hp). It was horrible in the Buffalo winters, so I traded it for an 07 Vue 5 speed (no where near as fun).

I had a 2004 Saturn Ion quad-coupe (not a Red Line) in SubLime (bright green with gold fleck paint) with a CVT I bought in 2006. It had fog lights (the blanking plate near the dash light switch on yours), traction control (the blanking plate hear the hazards), auto headlights, everything but the 6-CD changer. I traded it in 2021 with a little over 124,000 on the clock because it was starting to really fall apart on me. Replaced the fuel lines, brake lines, had to get a new (used) steering rack, and it still needed rear suspension, oxygen sensors, and some bubbles of rust were appearing on the hood. It was a fun little car, but it got to the point where I was throwing too much money at it to make it feasible. Best of luck with your Red Line!

I have had 4 Saturn's and the most fun one was the 1992 SC2 that had the flip up lights and I did 110mph in it and it was so fun. I have had 2 Ion's and a Outlook and that had an amazing ride and got rid of it because it was only 2wd and need AWD being in MN.

Hey JR, I'm located right down the street in OKC, and I have owned 2 of these this past decade. Absolutely loved these cars. I know you normally sell these after you fix them. So consider me interested when you're ready to sell it. Alternatively, if you're interested in another unique or "cool" 90s car, I have a 99 Ford Contour SVT with 113k miles that I'd be more than willing to drive up your way and offer as part of a trade. Might make a few cool videos fixing up some of the minor stuff that I never got around to. LMK, been a 5 year subscriber, love what you do man!

I bought a 2004 Ion sedan brand new for slightly over $10,000 with the GM employee discount (I worked for EDS.) It was nothing special but the 5-speed was nice to shift and I drove it 185,000 miles and got pretty much 40 mpg the whole time. If I had known that the plastic chain tensioners were weak on these I would have replaced them in time and driven it another 150,000.

I have a 2005 saturn ion with a 5 speed the thing is claped out you could say it's not terrible. It's got the same issue with the wipers for the windows and the drivers side mirror is held on with 3 wood screws 😂. Back drivers taillight is cracked. However, it has almost 200k miles on it and it has working a/c and runs like a champ.
