2017 Suzuki Ignis vs Volkswagen Up! - Budget car showdown

  • Derivatives of the Volkswagen Up! and Suzuki Ignis models are finalists in the budget car category of the 2017/18 #CarsAwards, which sets up a fascinating head-to-head between the pugnacious city cars. In this video, regular contributor and #CarsAwards judge Francisco Nwamba compares the 1.0 Take Up! with the 1.2 GLX derivative of its Japanese rival.
Both cars offer loads of appeal to the young and young at heart, whereas the (now exclusively 5-door for the South African market) Up! trades on its compactness, inherent solidity and classless appeal, the Ignis is funky, bigger than it looks and well specced.
There are a number of similarities in terms of the Volkswagen and Suzuki's packaging, but how do they compare in key areas when compared back to back? It's time to find out.

My daily drive is a 25 year old Suzuki, the most reliable and cheap to maintain car I’ve ever owned, and I’ve owned VW, mini, and Pajero. About to buy my wife a car in this segment, and we test drove them all, Ignis was the best. The UP has the well built feel VW offers, but lacks space, low on the road and has back windows that are fixed and cannot wind down, even on the 4 door. Ignis has auto windows all around and more space. Most importantly for me, I looked in the engine bay and was relieved to find an easy to access, simple engine to work on, so when 5 years is up, I can personally maintain the car if we choose to continue with it. I believe the UP is belt driven, so you can bet when your 3 years are up, the compulsory belt change at 90 000 km is gonna set you back some cash. Ignis is chain driven, probably lasts 200 000 km plus if car maintained well. Our VW polo hatch gave us wheel bearing humming issues all its time with us, and I believe VW has a general problem with this in their hatches, so expect the UP to do the same.

Many complains about the back side of the ignis, but it's cool in fact it's just crying out for spoilers, sport wheels and some front fenders. It's a bit like the FIAT 🐼 in oriental style.

I personally would take the Ignis. I however am biased. I own a Swift and love it. Also, my parents haven't had the best experience with VW. But it's just me :) Up is far from a bad car!

I like the Suzuki's front end but the overall shape of the car just seems a little weird. The interior feels spartan because of the minimalistic center stack. Like Suzuki just slapped a tablet on there.

Mini cooper founder name is Sir Alec issigonis. Is name ignis related to Issigonis? But the purpose he made mini is to create cheap small good gasoline cunsumption car. Same with my ignis. I use this ignis in indonesia petrol tipe since 2018 that use AGS matic transmition that actualy manual transmition with computer so has only two pedal.
Very valueble money car with price same as the cheapest toyota or daihatsu car in indonesia we get the Nexa car branded from suzuki in india. Imported to indonesia. Very top in gasoline consumption in indonesia 17 km/ L in trafic jam, quiet car , good looking exterior and nice interior design, we get extrem Air conditioner panel, LCD monitor music player JVC.
I like using AGS transmition we can use manual that can fast aceleration in city and use automatic mode in highway.
In maintanance fee and oil is 1/ 3 daihatsu or toyota. Body plat ignis is so thick, more thick than the highest price Toyota car Fortuner SUV. Ground clearence is high so match with the majority bad road in my country. Before i use Daihatsu Sirion hathback low ground clearance that often body repair because road condition. Since 2018 until now 40.000 km

One should not underestimate the Fuel consumption in that Up! Its ridiculously good and is the only car that can actually do better than what VW actually claim. I've seen better than 4.6 to the 100!!!!

I’m currently 18 years of age and I must say I absolutely adore my 2015 VW UP! (Style edition). It just offers so much in a small package. With a beautiful rumble on start up as well as when you put your foot down. The Suzuki just seems incredibly boring compared to the UP!

Compare standard safety equipment, Ncap ratings, resale value, amount of service centres. Compared both with road tests. Vw built quality excellent. Suzuki felt like cheap budget car.

    • @weetbix2083

VWs are known to fall apart. Suzuki may not have that percieved premium feel but without question will outlast a comparable VW and cost less to maintain.

  • @johanslabbert2869

No. At the end of the day you need a safe car. The Ignis, with only 2 airbags and no traction or stability control, falls far short of the modern norm.
It may be better in certain areas, but the lack of safety equipment makes it impossible to recommend.
And for not pointing that fundamental difference out, this review gets a zero.

Up was such a piece of trash. Boring to drive, suv seating position and driving dynamics, deliberately designed to make you take it to the dealership instead of diy and they cant even cover up metal on doors. Lazy lazy lazy design but people praise it cause it has a vw badge. Meanwhile suzuki is actually good, fun, light, engaging, reliable and easy to work on. Frankly everyone who gets an up is a fool.
