Love Gene's channel! I also love shooting with my RED's in a studio - I've taken them out for VLOG type shoots, but waaaaay to cumbersome for that. They also attract too much attention if you want to be stealthy. For the most part I'd say Cinema Cameras are a rental for the jobs that must have them.

All about the right gear for the job. Couldn't agree more. We were shooting a commercial for BYU (Brigham Young University) so it was a rather pricey production. Our DP had to shoot on a RED so he could get the full 4444 (for accurate green screen keying) over his preferred Canon C300 Mk2 and it's 444. He actually hates RED because of how unreliable they are (we had a problem on set that day that took about an hour to fix too) and mainly shoots on C300 Mk2's for basically all his productions. He's been in the industry for 30 years or so and we could've used Arri's that the studio owns, but again what's the point since it wasn't a movie and we didn't need the soft tones the Arri has. Get the gear for the job you do. It's all about the balance of your gear+your ability to utilize that gear to its fullest potential. I shoot on a BlackMagic Ursa Mini Pro since it's affordable and the rest of the money we had went into getting lenses instead of us using most of our budget on a C300 Mk2. With shooting in full 12bit RAW (or even 10 bit ProRes if we're carful with lighting) we can color grade it to the point where the normal person wouldn't be able to tell that it's a BM skin tone or a Canon skin tone. Use your tools and maximize them rather than spending all your money on tools you can't even utilize correctly.

Are you using a variable ND? I ditched my variable ND for a couple of solid NDs cause I was fed up with wonky sky gradients and vignetting. It's not as big of a hassle as I expected because you can often leave one ND on and dial in exposure with slight tweaks to ISO/aperture/shutter. The sharper, more uniform image is worth it IMO. Thanks for making these videos!

It's not easy to make a camera truly pay for itself before it's time to upgrade to another camera. It's one thing to have work that you get because you have a camera, but in order to have a camera truly pay for itself, you need to be able to charge that much additional to the rates that you're already getting. In this market, with the over-saturation of DPs that own cameras, it's a lot more difficult than it sounds.

A huge bummer is that Red recently announced the Scarlet-W body is NOT part of the current DSMC2 line, and cannot get a sensor swap out to any of the current sensors (Gemini, Helium, etc). This is extremely disheartening since the Scarlet W was sold as a DSMC2 camera, and the launch material mentioned the great upgrade path (which is now non-existent).
With the recent price drop, you can get the Helium 8K body for just $25,000. An Epic W 8K package can now be found for under $30k.
Hm that’s quite a bit less than I thought.

Thank you for your interesting feedback. - We own 3 Cameras, Canon C 300 MK I, C 300 MK II and RED Gemini and made with the 3 cameras a day scene test at 25 fps. A neutral audience in the studio had clearly the same opinion of the graded look: Rank 1. C 300 MK I, 2. C 300 MK II, 3. RED Gemini. Having worked a few month with the 3 cameras, I personally love them all. The C 300 MK 1 for it's look. The C 300 MK II for the resolution of 4 K if required, quick working with sound for imagefilms and documentaries, the RED Gemini allows to achieve more emotional/abstract images with higher framerates (e.g. 100 fps 5 K 2:1 - 8:1 - no crop loss ) and fabulous natural shooting in low light. Conclusion - there is never a perfect camera - but the right one for each filmproduction.

The colors seemed a little more vibrant in the RED than the 1DX mk ii, to me. Was that a difference in color grade? like are the colors just able to be pushed farther in post in the RED, or what was that?

Funnily enough on the first view I preferred the more contrasty images of the Canon. On second thought (or view? haha) the RED of course blows it out of the water when it comes to dynamic range. I guess that shows that it's not always about sensors and dynamic range and stuff, but what you make of what you have and if you can get away with the limitations of your camera (or rather smooth them out with skill). Great video 👍

My RED Raven doesn't crop when shooting 120fps? It shoots full 4.5K 120fps, but if I want to shoot even higher than that such as 240fps I have to change the resolution to 2K. Isn't that the case with the Scarlet-W also?
What song did you use at the end Matti. Thanks and Great video. I definitely don' need a RED camera for my kinda work but it's nice to hear reasons why others could need it in their arsenal. GH5 is the best fit for me at the moment

I don't agree with the DSLR rigging comment on commercial shoots. I have footage from the Red Raven and Sony A6500 and C200 that almost match perfectly. With the new cameras coming out in 2018 -19 the quality gap between cine cameras and DSLR - hybrid cameras is closing. If I was shooting a real movie or tv production of course we would rent the big cameras. Be nice to DSLR type cameras and camera snobs aren't cool in 2018.Good video with good information though.
