- In this entry of the Super Sentai Retrospective, I take a look at Battle Fever J, the third Sentai and one of the most... interesting ones.

The use of a mech in Spider-man was actually because Toei had a giant set available as Toei and Ishinomori had created a tokusatsu called Daitetsujin 17 the year prior. Producer Toru Hirayama said that live action shows about giant robots were too expensive for Toei which was what led to Toei ending their Giant Robo tokusatsu at only 26 episodes back in the 60s. Toei wanted to take the risk though because they were seeing so much success making giant robot anime and felt the merchandising would be strong enough to make it profitable. In the case of spider-man one of the main sources of revenue was actually record sales. Toei partnered with Columbia Records to release the soundtrack on vinyl, this was relatively new at the time but by the early 80s record companies sponsoring tokusatsu and anime would become the norm, and soundtrack sales are currently one of the biggest sources of revenue for anime.
You forgot one thing. They use the theme to capitalize on the disco era. The word "fever" was taken from "Saturday Night Fever"
Loved the video, please keep them coming! Also, some info on Diane Martin: she was a model, not an actress, which why her acting was subpar. She did speak Japanese but with was broken Japanese and with a heavy accent, which is why they dubbed her. Battle Fever J was originally only going to be a 6 month production, so when it was extended to a full year she quit, as she wasn't able to fit it into her schedule.

There were a few giant robot themed toku shows prior to Supaidaman. No costumed heroes, but robots controlled or piloted by people nonetheless.
Stuff like Tetsujin 28-Go, Giant Robo and Red Baron (and it's sequel Mach Baron).
Supaidaman was the first toku to combine the human-scale transforming heroes with giant puloted robots.

You know, i'm pretty sure Cossac's hat is an Ushanka, painted orange and black as refference to Ribbon of Saint George, a military symbol of Russia and Ussr.

i've been looking for a Sentai retrospective like this for YEARS lol.
Just remember, both Goranger and JAKQ were NOT created by the same people(Saburo Yatsude). The two series was done by the father of Rider himself Shotaro Ishinomori as it took 1995 to finally incorporate the two series within the Super Sentai compound. Ninja Captor should be in the collection but Toei themselves are taking too long.
Also Lisa Komaki wasn’t only dubbing Diane Martin but like Kenji Ohba she was the physical counterpart of Ms. America.
IIRC there was a little exposition in some of the early episodes that say that Shiraishi was born/raised/lived in Central Asia. That's probably the link you're looking for why he is the original Battle Cossack.
This was such a spectacular retrospective that I really enjoyed watching I loved the last 2 videos so much that I watch J.A.K.Q twice and Gorenger 3 times! I love these videos I cannot wait for your Denziman video! Also the fact that you released this video on April 1st is great.

14:17 The reason why they assigned the flamenco for France was because they originally planned a Battle Spain before changing it to France. The flamenco stuck because they considered French music to be unsuitable for fight scenes. Also fun fact, southern France does contain a lot of Spanish immigrants, so technically it's not incorrect for them to use flamenco to represent France, but yeah.
17:24 Aside from what the comments have told you about the significance of the crescent moon for France, I think it's maybe also partially based on the sengoku era warlord Masamune Date's iconic helmet. The yellow crescent moon that's lopsided on one end is pretty much the iconic look, and they even put it on the blue ranger, which also matches Date's associated color as well. If you want another example of this in toku, just look at Kamen Rider Gaim.
But yeah, I do get what the suits are trying to do, and I think the fanart at 4:18 is what they were meant to be viewed as. Honestly, if they just cut out the eye holes and the mouth plate, it'd probably look decent. Maybe someone can photoshop that for a concept.
20:47 I think it bears mentioning how the concept of the "team cannon" evolves, starting from JAKQ. In that show, the team just carries parts of the cannon, and the same happens here. It'll take a while before it gets to the point where they use their unique weapons to form the cannon.
23:58 Interesting to see Sentai's first giant monster appearance being a separate entity from the ground level monster. I guess Spiderman really cemented the tropes we associate with Sentai first, with transforming robot and monsters growing giant instead of BF's more unconventional approach. Even the Spider Machine GP-07 docking into Marveller could be considered a combining sequence, though that might be a stretch. Speaking of the giant monster approach, this of course will be repeated later in Go-Busters and Kiramager.
24:27 I think Battle Shark functions more like a carrier than a fighter jet, and of course it's gonna be the template for future carrier ships and mechs.
24:40 Also bears mentioning how the mecha concept evolves in Sentai. For their first outing, they didn't go with anything fancy, just a straight up humanoid mecha from the get go. Future seasons would spice things up with transformations, and later combinations. From what I can find, apparently they wanted the Battle Shark to be able to transform, but somehow they didn't go with it. The idea would of course get revisited the next season.

Giant Robo debut October 11th 1967.
Iron King debut October 8th, 1972.
Super Robot Red Baron debuted July 4th, 1974.
These all predate Tokusatsu Spider-Man by over a decade at most and 4 years at least. Toei's first giant Robo series was a show literally called "Giant Robo". Leopardon carries on a legacy of Toei Super Robots but it was not the first. Spider-Man was the first transforming hero to be a Super Robot's pilot however, and the show success is indeed the reason why Battle Fever J was given their own Giant Robot too.

The closest I saw of episode 1 or Battle Fever J as a kid was a YTPesque edit of the first episode with footage of the 1980's Ninja Turtle oepning inserted in the scene at 12:25 in particular. The last scene I remember seeing (probably watched another video just afterwards or got off the computer or mobile phone I watched it on) was them all doing their dance at 14:32. Outside of

Into Toei's standards, the japanese Spiderman is the first hero to control a giant robot, but in Tokusatsu history he is not the first. In 1976, Senkosha produced a series known as Chiisa wa Superman Ganbaron, a Henshin Hero series who introduced the first ever giant robot controlable by a transformable hero, who is formed by mechas(an factor Toei adopted in Super Sentai franchise since Taiyou Sentai Sun Vulcan in 1981). Many Tokusatsu fans must consider Ganbaron as the first series to include the giant robot as part of the story instead of Spiderman, and I think who this Tokusatsu series with the popular Marvel Comics hero could be not be made if the giant robot element don't be used(as the main idea of Toei to develop a japanese version of Spiderman was inside of a discarded idea of an Tokusatsu series based on the tale of Hanzo Hattori, in a series when the ninja is transported for the modern times to confront a evil empire who wants conquer the humankind between past and present, similar who exists in Tsuburaya's Kyoryu Sentai Koseidon)

Super Sentai would be a better show if they had one season every two years to give people a break, also Spider-San was not the first Toku show to use a transforming mech, Toei did Iron Robot 17 before Spidy and before that Tsuburaya had Jumborg Ace also people do die from electrication in real life. It's not supernatural. Plus, scarves are more practical to quote the designer from the Incredibles, "No capes!"
Apparently, the Miss America change was already planned. Just note that in the first episodes, in the opening scene, where they appear in profile, when she is about to appear there is a cut. When the actress changes, the take is complete, as if they had already done it before.
I’m pretty sure that’s a different shot. Diane missing in that shot is probably yet another consequence of her not being available.

Battle Cossack's helmet reminds me of a headworn kerchief of some East European peasant man. It looks like the male equivalent of your typical babushka's scarf and those wide sides are actually parts of that scarf. I remember that I've seen somebody wearing kerchiefs that way, but I can't recall if it was on some picture or in real life. Besides, I don't know how it's called or which then-Soviet nation uses it, but as to me it's either Russian or Ukrainian thing.
As for his colors, there's something called the St. George's ribbon. You may notice that Russian soldiers often wear some ribbons or another decors with alternate black and orange stripes looking like the shell of the potato bug. That's it. It's an old Russian symbol, derived from the Cross of St. George, and it's been considered an unofficial symbol of Russians for over two centuries. Looks like they incorporated that striped pattern to the Battle Cossack's suit.

Ok the final of the j trilogy called battle star rangers j fever finale so this a final battle between the conflict of the time of the 70’s not nam but between two fractions between disco and the punks the disco defense led by the defense minster he doesn’t need character he’s the cool guy that is serious unlike the assistant instead of the crow there is disco man with big poofy hair(think miror b from pokemon colosseum) with five of people recruit from different parts of the globe America,Cossack (which is ussr) but can’t use the actual name due to conflict Kenya,Brazil( change France because it doesn’t make sense since ussr is part of Europe sort of but Asia too which Eurasia) and finally Japan a honorable warrior who is a mix of old Japan but new Japan as well,Brazil he or she is the party one you know the fun one which annoyed the others he or she will know the real responsibility of a battle starrangers,battle Cossack is strict by the rules type of guy and a perfectionist led by this cool Russian guy who has a bone to pick with miss america(because you know real world tensions) and miss America is a small time model the others are confuse by the culture shock of her she a bit of a rebel and together despite their differences they are untied as team by dancing and share a common goal to defeat a secret society and speaking of there a secret society that causes chaos and confusion called the ego punks led by captain ego who has telekinesis and can fight along with a strong but fine lady his gf (you can think of her name) they manipulate punks or members they won’t be accepted to society so they form a secret society of praising captain ego and grow his ego and built monsters with the monster machine here how it works captain ego thinks of the monster and turn them into reality (now how cool would that be) and his lady grows the monsters now instead of them getting the powers automatically by putting them on they got it by dancing because there is a star grid that has certain energy in parts of the world (btw no devil because well it’s a waste) so instead captain ego and his lady is the final battle first they fought him in the dojo but his strong lady revives him and the battle star rangers fight them in their evil base for the final confrontation and the lady got stoned in because captain ego absorbed so much giant power and they fight in the megazord in a epic fashion and then one final attack and he’s defeated also there is a movie that combine all three heroes teams and villains teams to revive the iron dictator and destroy the star grid and commander ego gets annoyed by jakos their own egos is their own downfall but they manage to defeat the star grid who rebuilds itself into the power grid they are called the power rangers and defeat them in epic fashion and say their goodbyes and say hello to the new generation of power rangers the end(what do you think I did my best I love your summaries thank you)

The one thing, that i liked about this season, about the whole old classic super sentai seasons, it doesn t afraid to show death. And Kensaku Shirashi death, it s so infaired for him to die like this. Like in reality, everything takes a risk, even if you end up dead, just because you want to protect someone and made him happy. Kensaku death is realistic, like in real cruel world.

Shiraishi grew up in central Asia, presumably a country which was part of the Soviet Union, hence Cossack and not Russia. He represented the USSR as a whole.

the second half of this show is a very noticeable step up from the first half
If you listen closely to the 1st episode you can tell which sound bits are Diane's actress and which one is the other actress.
My big gripes with the series was: What the heck is the deal with Battle France? Might as well have been Battle Spain, given the dance style he uses in his battle pose. And couldn't they have cast a black actor to play Battle Kenya and then dub his voice in post?
I can't tell because of the image quality, but the America Helmet in that promo picture looks like the blonde hair is molded onto the helmet instead of being a wig.
It does look a bit more plastic-y
What's funny is that to my knowledge this was the only break Super Sentai has as of 2024 while Power Rangers has 2 breaks.
And Power Rangers Series is now on his second hiatus after the final season of Dino Fury. Possibily, the franchise will be a next one to die in the sand of memory after Metal Hero, Toei Fushigi Comedy Series, Chouseishin Series and Takara Heroes(including Girls X Series)

Well it depends on what in your opinion makes a satisfying ending but for me the first satisfying ending was dynaman's so in about 4 seasons

So why didn't they just hired Peggy's actress to even play the 1st female ranger in this series rather than only voice the actress? Wouldn't it make sense to have her on camera than a actress who couldn't speak Japanese. Sure she probably was "too old" to play a ranger once more but then again since she was in the last project and still reprised the role in that one unless she was preoccupied with other projects and could only voiced Diana.
5:44 Sorry but hard disagree on the Battle Fever J theme song. Hands down one of the better showa era sentai themes, hooked me hard when I heard it as a kid and I know it by heart til today !

I torrented the episodes, but you can also watch it on Tokuzilla. That site has every Sentai and Kamen Rider ever fully available as well as tons of other Toku.
OMG it's finally here have been waiting for weeks so now to my opinion on bfj: this is my least favorite(so far im in dairanger right now) season not saying i hated it though it just bore me while finally having macha is fun it didn't do enough to make the episodes interesting anyway can't wait to see you tackle denziman

Ok only thing that’s wrong is that the FIRST Toku to use mecha vs monster battles was the Godzilla franchise, namely Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla
I may be one of the few here but I loved the Battle Fever series. Might be corny but it was my first sentai series and was hooked on it. Suits ok yeah they were kinda bad but I still feel it has something special about them.
I feel you. It was actually one of the first ones I watched too and, as I said, there are parts of it that I like to this day. It was kind of a guilty pleasure for me.
