  • How to Run in Your Motorcycle KTM RC390 Duke 390 or Any other small to mid range motorcycle
    Many people have asked me this question.. How do I run in my motorcycle. Especially the KTM Duke 390 and RC 390 riders.
    Will work for Duke 200 and RC 200 as well.
    So in this video I answer this very common question.
    Also called engine break in. Or braking in period.

    In case of shredding of metal particles from the new engine these particles are very fine powdery-like and for that purpose there's an oil filter. So there's no need to change the oil at just 30 kms and then filling the engine up with new one rather its advisable to change the oil at around 500-750 kms. Modern day (that too KTM) engines are so much refined and efficient that they hardly need any such precaution of changing oil so early.

    Changing the lube after 30 clicks is not important coz see , the mesh size of the engine oil filter is of the order of 10 microns , and the metal particles that the cylinder wall and piston skirts shed are of the order of 100 microns , so they don't really get back in the engine once the lube has passed through the filter in the sump...so it would be wiser to change the filter at the first service and that's the mistake I made with my bike coz I was still a student and didn't know so much...but I advise it to my friends..

    Hi rahul,
    your technique of break-in explained is just industry standard recommended by any manufacturer. However this is not the most effective way to break in a new modern engine. Manufacture recommends to use this age old technique so as to keep themselves on a safer side, but trust me engine has evolved so much this days that you really dont require a proper break in for your crankcase, gearbox assembly. The only requirement is to break in the piston, it's rings with the cylinder walls so they provide maximum compression, minimum dissapation of harmful gas to escape down from the cylinder to the crankcase spoiling your engine oil.
    Proper break in involves varying the engine rpm and use a lot of engine breaking to make a effective seal of the piston rings with cylinder walls, that ensure maximum compression you achieve from the power stroke. This ensure maximum power delivery, maximum longetivity and minimum fuel consumption. Because you end up producing more power if your piston seals are tight.
    It involves magnets to fit down to catch metal dust which gets suspended in oil once you break in. As we dont want to damage internal moving components.
    I recommend a hard break in method using engine breaking with varying rpm, and completely changing the oil after 1st 50 kms of hard break in with oil filter. HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO USE ONLY AND ONLY MINERAL OIL, as semi synthetic or synthetic oils are just to slippery for achieving a proper break in.

    • @RideWithRahulOfficial
      @RideWithRahulOfficial  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Aditya Roy I have heard all of that, however, what the MotoMan breaking in method doesn't tell you is that Manufacturers don't write the manuals, the engineers who made the engine write the manual. And I believe that they know a little bit more about the engine than some random guy called motoman. That is just my belief.

    • @RideWithRahulOfficial
      @RideWithRahulOfficial  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aditya Roy and I completely agree with the mineral oil change, because that puts out the metal particles. I have also suggested that in the break in method.
      The hard break in method is still controversial and there is still no concrete proof.

      Is it okay to use synthetic / semi synthetic oil from the 2nd service on wards ?
      Also , should I replace the oil filter after the 1st 50 KMs ?

    Got my RC200 about 20 days ago,its amazing.But it does have some problems.
    1.While riding with a pillion if you go above a speed breaker even at 12 kmph,the bike hits the ground.Always!
    2.It heats up alloott! The fan starts even after riding just for 3-4 kms.
    3.Riding position is too agressive,it'il take atleast 15 days to get used to the position.
    4.Back tire has pretty bad grip.
    5.Gear ratios aren't too good.
    6.If i stop at 5th or 6th gear,it dosen't go to 1st gear easily,the gear reading just shows blank.
    Rest,the bike is ammazing! The sound,the power absolutely amazing.
    And i havnt changed the factory given oil even once,i've ridden it for 600kms till now.

    • @RideWithRahulOfficial
      @RideWithRahulOfficial  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Siddhesh Inamdar the back tyre thing I have to investigate.The gear ratios are extremely short and it's exactly as Duke 200.Heating is common in KTM bikes but they improved the fan a lot and the air now goes below.I would say not be concerned about the Fan being on. IT's there to reduce the temperature.

    Hey Rahul! I had to wait a little more than two months to have the bike delivered. It came from Greece. Since I live in Albania, Greece being home of KTM in South-Eastern Europe was the closest alternative possible. Although never meeting the officials in person, they were of maximum kindness and made all efforts for the bike to arrive safe and sound.
    I have ridden it a little bit, not more than 25 kilometers, as I was waiting for my driving licence to get printed (it took more than a month arrived today) and as I am waiting to do the registration and put on the licence plate.
    The user manual is a good place to start. It would be best to read it cover to cover, at least once. There is also a sticker on the tank reminding it to do that. I am following their rules except one, first oil and oil-filter change.
    There are no KTM dealers nor services in Albania, although there are some well experienced mechanics, but they still lack parts. So I will have to find a good mineral oil and what is more difficult an O.E.M oil filter. I plan to do the first oil change as the bike hits 35 kilometers and then go on with the running in.
    I thank you for the support during the competition. I am really grateful for that, to you and your friends too!
    Following you regularly. Keep it up with the good work!

    - I got my RC390 delivered in 37days

    how can the shredded metal go to the lubrication point. in a wet sump, the oil passes through oil filter abd to lubricating points right.

    • @TanmayChhatbarR
      @TanmayChhatbarR 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is the point of lubrication that sheds metal.
      When the engine is new, there's a lot of friction between the cylinder and the piston, and this leads to that metal shredding.
      Generally they are visible when you bleed the oil the first few times.

    Getting the first service soon, so gonna change the oil. I used to pull clutch while breaking in my earlier bike but on 390 I am not using it. While breaking i sense a block on the gear side.
    keeping 5.5 is a good help. I am planning to go Dehli from mumbai on bike next month, would that be bad as its a new bike? Also engine heat is a lot in urban area.

    iam planing to buy a bike...iam a student who rides 50km per day...my ride is mixed with city and highway.... which will you prefer
    duke 390 ,rc 390 or cbr 250r

    • @RideWithRahulOfficial
      @RideWithRahulOfficial  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jasim Majeed if mileage is not a factor you can go for Duke or RC 390, however 50 km per day would mean 2 litres of fuel each day which comes to Rs. 150 each day on fuel. If you find that a bit high, then go for the more mileage efficient RC 200 or Duke 200. If you want more comfort than the CBR 250R is a better choice but it's an outdated model which may get replaced soon.
      The pulsar RS 200 is another option for you to consider.

    Sir I really like the way to talk about each and every specific topic which you want to talk about but I have two doubts which I'm not able to get off my mind I'm talking the delivery of my bike on Thursday so I need to knw what oil the specific name and model for example Motul 7100 20w50etc. And the nxt doubt is to whether or not to use high octane fuel or just use the Speed or power petroleum used in India better than the normal unleaded fuel. I'm getting the new Ktm duke 390 2015 model with slipper clutch so please advice me ASAP.

    • @RideWithRahulOfficial
      @RideWithRahulOfficial  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +harsha vardhan you don't have to worry about the engine oil, as service centre knows what oil to put in it. I forgot the grading, it's motul 7100 but I don't remember if it was 20 W 50 Or not. I think it's there on my Duke 390 engine stalling problem video somewhere.
      For fuel, you can use regular unleaded. I have used Speed 97 (rs 100/l) and it gave my engine a smoother running experience. I haven't used normal speed which is 93 Octane.

      I have read the manual, however, advising people to go up to 7500 isn't a good idea because most would keep going over it, that is why I said 6500 to keep that safety buffer.

      Rahul V you can get Bajaj SS mineral oil from Any Bajaj service station. I have only mentioned my recommendations it is what I believe to be best. Mineral oil sets in the piston the best. Is it possible ?
    Or can we change it through mechanic of local garage ?

    • @RideWithRahulOfficial
      @RideWithRahulOfficial  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Changing it there will not solve the purpose, because, till 30 km the engine sheds more metal particles. So the new oil will get more particles.
      You can change the engine oil from other mechanics as well. Just make sure, they clean up the metal particles from the oil filter very well, before putting in the new engine oil.
      Ride safe and buy riding gears.

    hi Rahul I recently got new duke 200 I m a little bit worried about the gear ratio, moreover I m new to biking before I driven activa a lot. This is the first time I m driving the bike for good mileage what will be the best gear ratios according to speed.

    • @RideWithRahulOfficial
      @RideWithRahulOfficial  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      shenoy joseph just keep the RPMs to 5000 or below and you will get good mileage. Don't use the power. Basically drive it like a 100cc with gradual acceleration and if you go to tour settle in around 80 kmph on 6th gear and maintain that same speed for as long as possible.

    Hi Rahul, I have got my Duke 390 last monday. I have completed around 120 kms on it. Should I change the oil now? you have mentioned it to change at around 30 kms. Also, is it safe to go to a local mechanic and give him the oil and ask him to change it for me? I have never changed engine oil before.

    • @RideWithRahulOfficial
      @RideWithRahulOfficial  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      rahul kosambi yes, a local mechanic can change it but get the fuel filter thoroughly cleaned because it will have a lot of metal particles. Use Bajaj SS grade mineral oil and switch to full synthetic at 1000 km. And don't mention to your service centre that you changed you engine oil outside.

      It's for the pistons to set in correctly. And after the first oil change and 1000 km they remove the restrictions in RPM. Though it's not as low as 50 km/h.

  • @crazydrifter13
    @crazydrifter13 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    30 km isnt enough...50-70 is good. It still sheds a LOT after 30 and then you end up having that particulate matter till 1000kms in your engine. I prefer 70-75 km oil change and then at 750 or 1000 km. Any vehicle having overdrive gear should not engage it during run in. Overdrive gears are stressful for engine during that period.

    • @RideWithRahulOfficial

    Hey man, thank for the video. Keep up the good work..
    I have a Yamaha fzs version 1, which I use for daily commute and i have been riding it for last 9 months. Now I am thinking about buying a higher cc motor cycle and RC390 seems to be a good choice. I have some few questions, hope you answer and clear my doubt..
    1st one is how comfortable are the gear ratio feel while driving it through the city?
    2nd one is how is the engine braking on this bike?
    3rd one is does RC390 have heating issue like the duke390?
    4th On power drift they said that the 2015 version might have slipper clutch, any idea on that?
    5th what is the onroad price in kolkata?
    6th If I order now can you tell me when will I receive it?
    Btw which road is this?I hope it is near park street area in kolkata, I live near Dumdum.. It looks like a good road for week end drive.

    • @RideWithRahulOfficial
      @RideWithRahulOfficial  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      sourav mukherjee 1. Gear ratios are tall and they require you to stay in 1-4th gear mostly in city.2. Engine breaking is very strong.3. Heating is less thanks to air going downwards due to new fan design.4. The 2015 version will release in India in 2016, so it's long wait as far as I can tell.5. On road price in Kolkata increased to Rs. 2.53 lakh (current price)6. I don't know, talk to Sourav Bose, Manager KTM Park Street, 09830006821 (You can refer me if you want)This road is NH-2 or Durgapur expressway.
