The rise of secularism in society is actually what's leading people into extreme politics. Progressivism, Marxism, socialism, communism and neoliberalism are the results because of the rise of secularism. We as humans and a society need structure and purpose in life. Religion does a good job in filling that void by giving people meaning/purpose and structure. I honestly believe that people would be more stable if we have organized religion or religious communities.

@@jonjonboi3701 I partially agree since it does benefit people when churches do charity but at the same time there are plenty of charitable groups that arent religious. Also there are plenty of purposes people can have in life without religion.

@@jonjonboi3701 also part of the problem is that the big religions are so scientifically incorrect that the younger generation are questioning if it's real so there needs to be a way for the church to start attracting millenials to their religion or the future of religion is fucked.

@@atheisth5066 I wouldn’t say that big religions are scientifically incorrect. This whole idea that religion is anti-science in general is so not true. There is definitely some anti-science within religion and same applies with secular beliefs as well.

The French burqa ban was not created because of commitment to "fundamentalist" secularism. It is merely a counter-productive reaction to perceived Islamisation. It is better to counter political Islam by ensuring that the advantages of Western democratic freedoms, including the freedom to wear what you like, are well supported and appreciated.

Basically Scott's argument is that the French don't have the right to choose secularism, and they should be more like the USA and accommodate religion...why? Who died and made the US way of life the best way of life. The areas in France that aren't forced to adopt secularism are allowed to do so under the law, so it's the law. Those who immigrate into France KNOW its a secular state; claiming discrimination is therefore simply a ploy to conflate issues for the purpose of violating the law.

Well the U.S. is recognized as the first Secular Democracy, so that kind of nullifies that thought. The American "Way of Life" may have people practicing religions, but it doesn't mean those religions have political say-so, leastways not in terms of "In the name of Gahd". That's seriously frowned upon, i.e. *illegal*.

I really don’t know how to feel about it. I’m not comfortable with the government saying women can’t wear headscarves if they want.

  • @thehobbyfam

Okay, but there is no history revisionism in saying that American history is fraught with Christian or Christian-esque people. A Christian type of religion was central in the lives of almost everyone--each town was their own denomination.

Cultural pluralism and political assimilation is America not France. Cultural and political assimilation IS France. Maybe we Americans should learn to respect other countries laws and culture, especially European countries, and stop trying to turn them into mini USA's. The USA loves to push multiculturalism but the fact is multiculturalism is causing more resentment and struggle here in the US than is French cultural assimilation in France.

I'd agree for the most part, but at least Hardline Secularism doesn't have previous text to say its caste is superior and 'others' people not within it. Hopefully we learn that basic Secularism is all that's needed. If it doesn't harm anyone else, enjoy yourself.

Much of this has been true for a very long time, and it's really something that has been brought to the surface after some significant violations of this freedom and mutual trust.
If anything, more guidelines on how to be part of a (mainly) non-religious society and as strict laws as possible that keeps society safe from both certain horrible acts as well as a decline in freedom and the terror it brings (bigger problem than the acts themselves, really).

Why is it bad though? Religion is a personal thing, it is unique to the individual, once’s religious faith is unique to that person, what is so bad to remove it from public services such as politics, schools? I feel like it is the best as everyone is treated equal and religion doesn’t form the base for educational growth etc… I see no valid reasons as to why it is bad mentioned in this video. Anyone help?
