    I understand the logical reasoning but i don't agree with the "fine motor skill" argument. A lot of aspects in a handgun also requires fine motor skill, like magazine release or the action of the finger on trigger shoe itself. Yet we still do them consistently. I think proper training and habituation is more of a crucial factor than just focusing if something is "fine" or not. That being said i have no issues with the MR920 being Gen 4, outside of the trigger pull that's (and that's my opinion) far better out of the box on a Gen 5.

    I just wanted to tell you again(broken record) I went again this Sunday was hitting head shots at 25 yards not every single time but more than less 1 second draw to bullseye shot from appendix carry took it to 35 yards and in the a zone 40 out of 50 shots . I know there are much better I’m not bragging about me being a great shot but I wasn’t anywhere near this consistent with my Sig 320 w/ Romeo 1 I have a holosun on my mr920 my confidence has skyrocketed I am going to buy another this summer I LOVE THIS PISTOL thank you u for making a great product

      Me too. I also have a Holosun (507C), am a new shooter and feel confident. My I-Target system and the Holosun have allowed me to gain this confidence without wasting ammo or range cost. Of course you still need to go to the range every so often, but oh boy.. when I do I feel much more sure of myself and my mechanics.

    I normally agree with SS. But this is merely just cost like he said. And it's kinda disappointing. Nobody likes to pay $1000 for a tricked out glock platform that misses some of the features of a new standard gen 5 glock.
    For me, being a lefty, I don't use the slide stop to release the slide anyways. But when competing I constantly have to "show clear" and unload the gun/lock the slide to the rear. Which is kinda tricky using your index finger on a non ambi slide release.

    • @KeithCherry90

      Yea man, they could have just done it.

    • @AndersonOozie13
      @AndersonOozie13 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      yeah, it's always an excuse. They need to just add and ambidextrous slide release. I agree, just holding your thumb up and racking it to lock it back is crucial. If they did so, I would sell my G19 Gen 5 and buy one in a heartbeat.

    • @ericfermin8347
      @ericfermin8347 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      100%. Switching to your right hand just to lock the slide back is stupid. Give us a raised (dimpled) slide lock and I could live with no ambidextrous slide lock.

    Ah, the gross motor skill bushwa. This argument is made by folks who use a scientific term incorrectly to try to give credence to their unsound theory. They are misusing a scientific term. The distinction between gross and fine motor skills come from the study of child development. Gross motor skills involve movements of your large muscles, like your legs. Any movement of your fingers is, by the very definition of the scientific term, a fine motor skill, because it involves moving the small muscles of your hand, fingers, and forearm. So pushing the slide stop is, indeed, a fine motor skill. Pushing the magazine release button is also a fine motor skill. Pulling the trigger is a fine motor skill. Grabbing the slide is ALSO a fine motor skill. So the assertion that grabbing and cycling the slide is a gross motor skill is completely false.
    The implicit assertion made by the "gross motor skill" crowd is that it is easier to grab and cycle the slide than it is to hit the slide stop. However, these folks never supply any evidence to support that assertion. The reality is that hitting the slide stop with your support thumb is no harder than grabbing the slide and cycling it, particularly if you have a reasonably sized slide stop. I replace the standard Glock slide stop with the extended slide stop.
    I have seen a master-level IDPA shooter grab the slide and have his hand slip off the slide without retracting it. This happened twice in the same course of fire during the stress of a competition. In contrast, as an IDPA and USPSA competitor, I've never seen a shooter miss the slide stop with their thumb.
    Look at it this way, if, as these folks claim, you can't hit the slide stop reliably, then how are you going to hit the magazine release reliably? Their argument is completely nonsensical, but they misuse the scientific terms in order to buffalo students.
    Both techniques -- slide stop or slingshot -- work. Using the slide stop is a little faster. Choose one and practice with it. But please stop repeating the "gross motor skill" bushwa because it is complete nonsense.
    You chose to use the Gen 4 system. That's fine. I'm sure you have reasons for doing so. But please don't try to justify it with the "gross motor skill" bushwa. Anyone who thinks about this issue critically realizes that is complete nonsense.

    I get your point, but as a left handed shooter I would like to have the same choices you enjoy, not being lectured on why is right for you to deny me the same range of choices you have. While I enjoy the MR9 a lot this is the one feature I notice it missing, and since I am able to compare my times with the G45 I know what I missing in speed and comfort.

    • @DanielRyanScott
      @DanielRyanScott 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's only a "fix" for you specifically. It would be a downgrade for me. For the majority of the people (80-90% are right handed) an ambi slide release does not add anything of value and creates more possible issues. More functions on paper does not always mean more better for end users of thier primary consumer base. The K.I.S.S principle applies here. Plus the slingshot knowledge is also true, so even right handers shouldn't be using it. Winter with gloves on makes the slide release less reliable for example.

      Stop whining and buy something else then. It’s no one’s fault that you are wrong handed.

  • @Murphy82nd
    @Murphy82nd 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    This is well and good if you have both hands available. If you need to release the slide or moreso lock the slide to the rear one handed and you only have your left hand available (injury or whatnot) having a slide stop available is a big help. In doing weak handed malfunction clearances of failures to extract, not being able to easily push up on that slide stop to lock the slide to the rear is a serious pain. To me this trumps the idea of fine versus gross motor skills (which itself ignores that there are other skills in using a handgun that would be considered fine, as others pointed out).

    As a southpaw myself I started shooting long before anything was geared towards us wrong handers, so I learned to do things using my left hand. I use my index (trigger finger) to drop the mag, changing that now would require relearning, and I generally always sling shot the slide back because the release is on the left side and not as reachable with my index finger. Love the way the MR920 feels in hand and I will most certainly be purchasing on in the near future, as soon as I can find one. I am really hoping to get the WarPoet version sold by Sportsman Guide.

  • @wessullivan2758
    @wessullivan2758 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    All of your reasoning apply to all slide releases...(right or left) based on your argument you shouldn’t have a slide release at all... which is ridiculous, this whole thing comes down to cost. He said that at the end of the video (which I do appreciate) but in reality that’s the number one reason or you wouldn’t put a right handed slide release on the gun. You also realize that if you didn’t put a right hand slide release people would have a fit...and Your market is very low for a left-handed slide release, so you don’t spend the extra money. That’s the deal. I like your gun but the reasoning shouldn’t be because slingshoting is better… If you believed that you wouldn’t have put a slide release on the gun at all.

    • @vgl217

      @@vgl217 So us lefties can't lock the slide back?

  • @ericfermin8347
    @ericfermin8347 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    OK, I'm fine with the slingshot explanation but now ask him to lock the slide back with his left hand and you'll understand why us lefties want the slide lock on the right side. Using your left index finger to apply upward pressure to the slide lock when trying to lock the slide left handed can be very hard to do, especially with this gun. This is made even harder with the protected (polymer) portion of the frame for the slide lock. This is why so many us modded our Glocks with after market slide releases. The MR920 has a protected slide lock without a raised surface which makes locking the slide back very difficult left handed. Don't tell me to use my right hand to lock the slide back either, that's a non-starter. Give us a raised surface on the slide lock. I shot an MR920 the other week on the range and loved the gun. Then I tried to unload the gun and found it very difficult to do left handed.

    Revisiting this because Shot show is coming up. Not being arrogant but these arguments are completely invalid because as a righty you are able to have that choice on your side, but I cannot as a lefty on my side. I would buy this pistol in a heartbeat if it had an ambi slide release. I know that the gen 4 patents have not expired so I know the patent is not the issue if you chose gen 4. PLEASE make this pistol with gen 5 controls and I will buy this in a heartbeat. I love shooting my friend's MR920. The price is also wonderful for what you get. But it is lacking a feature that is vital for us wrong handed shooters.
    I hope you guys see this. You would sell A TON more of these pistols if they were ambi.

    I learned that slingshoting is superior shooting with cold hands and gloves on.
    Also learned from low drills in dirt when some tiny gravel got in the gaps of the slide release, preventing it from moving.
    Plus the extra slam power from more travel as you mentioned.

  • @TheLegoJoker
    @TheLegoJoker 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I’m a lefty and I learned on guns that didn’t have the option of ambi slide releases or reversible mag buttons so it doesn’t bother me to not have the slide release and really I just keep my mag release set up for right handed shooters. I’d be lost in a stressful situation if I had to try to hit a mag release on the right side of the gun. Haha.
    The ONLY thing keeping me from buying one of these is the video where you talked about recommending magpul mags and that the mag button could wear out a Glock mag more quickly than a magpul mag. I have too many Glock mags to want to stock a different brand of mag. The guns look great and I’ve heard good things from owners, though.

    • @toddtzm
      @toddtzm หลายเดือนก่อน

      I only use Glock mags in my XR920P. I don’t like the Magpul’s as they don’t have the single counting round digits. Plus I carry the 19 round as my spare. Close to 10K rounds and no wear and I do a ton of nightly COF where we do mag reloads.

    Great video! Great Products! I have been an Instructor for 20+ years now, I have always taught both methods. But, I usually suggest to everyone the Overhand sling-shot method fro all the reasons you mentioned. Mostly for the extra momentum of the slide. I have seen many so called "Operators" miss the slide release, you know, the method that is so much faster, then have to come up over the top anyway! So how much faster was it? And by the way, it was during Force On Force Training, so in reality, they would have been DEAD!!! The Deer caught in headlights effect was priceless, since they just argued with the Instructor about it for 10 minutes. Also, Glock LEO Instructors also teach the Overhand Sling-Shot Method of Loading/Reloading..... But what do they know????

    Why does this gun need aftermarket parts? This baby runs solid with its stock (and by stock I mean upgraded by SS) parts. This gun is sweet action. I’ll keep buying what SS puts out. Key takeaway, at least for me, is the understanding/acceptance of the problems caused by 'upgrading' or swapping out parts for aftermarket. I always thought I was the oddball for looking for a solid pistol stock, having no desire to immediately swap out parts.

  • @KeithCherry90
    @KeithCherry90 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I understand the line of thinking, but you eliminated the option for those that don’t agree with your methodology when you could have sold so many more guns to the left handed crowd. The gross motor skills argument is relevant if you are trying to do something more involved like tying your shoe under massive stressors, not really an issue when tapping something your thumb is pretty much already sitting on. As far as aftermarket parts, adding an enhanced slide catch/release is pretty nominal and uncomplicated mod. Lastly, it has been proven that hitting the slide stop is quite a bit faster than the slingshot method and when nano seconds can mean the difference in life or death I want every advantage. As a lefty who hates the Glock grip angle and texture, but really wants something that takes the magazines due to how prevalent they are, it is so massively disappointing that you came so close to everything I want in a pistol but stopped short. I would have already purchased one of your pistols, but I guess I will stick with my S&W M&P 2.0 until something changes or someone else comes out with what I am looking for.

    Not having ambi slide stops has been the only thing keeping me from purchasing the MR920. If they came with ambi slide stops, I probably would have bought two MR920's. Shame, I really like the features of them, through and through.
    I can understand Shadow Systems reasoning for not including an ambi slide stop release, but I don't/can't agree with it. As others in the comments have said, pulling the trigger and pressing the magazine release are both fine motor skills. If you can do that under stress, then you can also press the slide stop release under stress.
    I was glad when Glock came out with the Gen 5, was able to start training myself to actually use the slide stop release the correct way, rather than having to use index finger to manipulate it, or having to sling shot the slide. It may be slight, but pressing the slide stop is absolutely faster than grabbing the slide.
    Its odd too, that people often argue racking the slide is fool proof, over pressing a small lever. But I personally have missed racking the slide before, and have seen others do the same, yet I haven't ever missed the slide stop release.
    Anyway, I really dig what Shadow Systems have to offer. I just hope the next model is released with fully ambi controls. Guess whoever does it first will get my money, Shadow Systems or Zev. Haha

    They are moving away from racking slides like that due to the installation of RMR's on a lot of pistols now. You would bang your red dot on your rifle around that is securely mounted, so why would you rack your pistol that way with a red dot? The most repeatable and reliable method is the pinch method. Yes, still fine motor skills, but what are pulling the trigger and pushing the mag release?

    I understand the logic, but I disagree with the "fine motor skill" argument as someone mentioned before. Fighter jet pilots are put in stressful situations where they are probably amped up on adrenaline and fear as well, yet they have a split second to react to a situation that involves pushing one of the small buttons in their cockpits to resolve it. If they can train to push a small button under stress, what makes us any different? I run extended slide releases on all my guns and I have never had an issue. I ordered a CR920 and I hope it fits one of the extended slide releases that I have.

As a matter of fact it is the one thing keeping me from purchasing your product over a gen 5 Glock of which I have a few. Is running the trigger a gross motor skill or a fine motor skill?

    Would you ever come up with a better way to completely disassemble the upper without removing the Optic. I love my 920 But i shoot a lot so therefore clean the gun a lot. And removing optic and rezero every time really makes me mad.

    • @toddtzm
      @toddtzm หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am like you as I shoot a lot. Posed that question to support. They mentioned if you clean it regularly then you won’t have to remove the optic to clean as often. Waiting to 10k or more. I use Gun Scrubber spray to flush out that area when regular cleaning. Glock recommends it for their GPT and it does work well in small spaces.

  • @davidsegal2236

    The question is with optics being prevalent these days, do you still slingshot the slide with and optic? Genuinely curious.

  • @TigronX
    @TigronX 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So do those points all hold true once you put the holosun optic on it? Seems like it would get in the way. Or is the optic so securely mounted that you actually get more real estate to grip for the sling shot technique?

    • @AdolfSchicklegruber
      @AdolfSchicklegruber 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those suckers are screwed on really well. You can sling shot with an optic for leverage. Guns are tools...they are hard to break when using them properly.

  • @VampsMedia
    @VampsMedia 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Yeah you can’t build a gun for the masses who use different techniques, just because of what you like to do, I use and prefer the slide release. I also know the gen 5 operating is better. would definitely look at what your customers want in the future.

  • @sword111119
    @sword111119 ปีที่แล้ว

    No disrespect, but the argument of motor movements holds no water. Everything about shooting a pistol is about fine motor movements - aiming, trigger pull, and in some cases safety manipulation. Pressing the slide release not only saves time, but it is also just more comfortable to do. Also, sometimes the slide goes forward on its own when you insert the mag, so training the slingshot method will condition you to move your left hand to the slide when you don't have to.
    Almost all handguns from big-name brands are including the ambi slide release. I think there is a use for it, but I understand not including it keeps costs down for the consumer.

  • @Johnblaze678
    @Johnblaze678 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think the gross vs fine motor skills is overrated. To play devil's advocate, everytime you drop the magazine, or pull the trigger, you are using single digit fine motor skill manipulation. Now that we have that out of the way, you don't need an obnoxiously large or extended slide stop to release the slide. Issues using a standard slide stop to release the slide are training issues. It comes down to efficiency. Top shooters (i.e. Scott Jedlinski) teach to avoid unnecessary movement. Their philosophy is "do less get more." A slingshot method is less efficient than using the slide stop.

Lol, current army gun is all ambi, m17. Ambi slide release is faster for competition shooters. Over idk.......15 plus videos show this. Disagree on the slingshot. I never missed the slide stop/release while doing speed reload. Of course it can happen 0.1 % of the time, and if it does then do the sling shot. Sling shot is slow and inefficient. From a general teaching point I understand that some people may have skills issues mostly because of practice but that doesn’t mean that slingshot is better. It is not. Therefore it’s a bummer for lefties. Gen 5 is the best.

    Hi Trevor - I'm a MR918 shooter that needs reading glasses to see anything up close. Is it possible to maybe make the slide release the same color as the barrel in order to see it up-close? (So that it contrasts against the black frame + slide body)? It could be marketed as an old-guy model -

    • @ShadowSystemsCorp

      Hi Mike! This is a new one. How much contrast do you need to see it? Are you able to locate it by feel?

    • @Kismetix
      @Kismetix 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ShadowSystemsCorp I need a fair amount of contrast to see the slide release. If it was a gold-ish color (same as the barrel) then I could definitely identify it quickly up close. I haven't given much thought to locating it by feel...but maybe if it was a bit larger and had something of a 'grippy' texture then I think it would be OK to find it by feel - instead of having to look at it (like I do now). Perhaps something could be added to the base slide release as an accessory for guys like myself...(BTW I have to use a Holosun optic to shoot the gun, the front sight is just a green blur due to my loss of ability for near-field focus)

  • @JBOperator
    @JBOperator ปีที่แล้ว

    I hear you, but I am a left handed shooter, and I really enjoy the ambi slide release typically found on Gen 5 glocks and a lot of newer pistols. It will always be faster than slingshotting the gun, even if it’s 1/10-2/10 of a second, it’s still faster. And aside from all of that, lefties just want to have access to the same features as right handers. It’s 2022, all pistols these days should be able to accommodate anyone, whether you right or left handed. I really like the SS MR920, but honestly the lack of ambi slide release will unfortunately be the reason I don’t buy this pistol. Let’s get it together, shadow

    Now you should do your demonstration with 2 empty mags like most of us would do at home when practicing our reloads. Oh wait, you can’t because the slide won’t get past the empty mag. Maybe you can give a demonstration of performing a reload while fighting someone off with your other arm, or while having your arm trapped, or maybe with a simulated broken hand. Oh ya, you can’t do any of those either.
    It’s annoying when companies lie to justify a position that they took. The reality is that you made this decision to save on cost, not because you wanted a minority of your customers to reload in a more tactical way. Stop justifying your cost saving decision by pretending it is somehow in my best interest.
