I remember the day Jonas passed away. Joseph broke down crying on his Twitch live-stream on that day. Joseph seriously admired Jonas and was probably a role model as well that motivated Joseph to be the best. Joseph is now a 2-time champion. He won in 2019, and of course 2018 against Jonas.
I don't think there is a pro tetris player who doesn't admire Jonas as a competitive player. I never played tetris myself, only watched Jonas over the years but i feel very heavy, knowing that Jonas will never play another final
I constantly come back to this. I feel Joseph became the champion at exactly the right time before Jonas passed away. Jonas left the championship title to the new generation, and what better way than with a 16 year old kid.
Neubauer did a sensational career with CTWC. Of course all of us wanted to keep this seven-time world champion more longer with us, but unfortunately life is sometimes very crude. But remember, Jonas left behind a huge legacy. His attitude, his kindness, and his spirit is the major things that everyone, who keeps himself/herself a good Tetris player, should take an example from Jonas, that's the way to do it. Rest in peace, legend, may you won an every Tetris battle above the clouds!
Jonas seems like such a great guy who just truly loves the game. He was such a great sport and now I want to go back and watch his past three victories!

Look at Jonas in game 3, as soon as he tops out he's incredebly mad, mad at himself for failing at playing as good as he could... and than he looks at Joseph's screen and he starts smiling, he's not worried that the guy will or not win the game, it doesn't make a difference anymore because he was mad about his bad playing, not about the title. He smiles because Joseph is playing incredible tetris, aggressive and not safe in any way, just going for it, never taking compromises with triples, risking it all. He smiles because he's seeing someone who's extremely good, and he admires him. That's sportsmanship.

What's fascinating about this to me is how much higher the skill level is now on top. The techniques that the younger players are using now just blow away the old style that Jonas is using. It's nuts how easily they transition into the 30s now, versus 5 years ago. The "kill screen" is no longer the kill screen with some of these younger players.
Came here looking for this comment. If only Jonas were still around to learn rolling (thus be able to play levels 30+) to couple with his excellent stacking skills! It would've be so interesting to see. Jonas rlly tends to score better in levels until a little over 20.
28:22 "And here comes his mom to congratulate him... his sister... mom... sister... it's asian I can't tell!" I nearly pissed my pants, this guy lmao! 😂😂😂
I don't think we realized it at the time, but Jonas may have been the greatest DAS player of all time. Respect the great one. Also 28:27 might be one of favorite quotes from anything ever.
Yeah, pretty sure he was the greatest DAS player of all time. And 100% agreed with your second comment haha. "Mom? Sister? Mom? Sister? It's Asian, I can't tell, nevermind." That cracked me up so much, and hearing this live on camera is just legendary 😂
may have been? Is the greatest not even the close room for debate. Jonas was the greatest as the game meant to be positioning pieces and strategy , now the speed is all but someone as great as him with a great rolling tecnique is the only way for me to seize a new goat, right now still for me he is the Greatest
Jonas is such a great guy. That speech congratulating and praising his rival (overcoming the logical "saltiness" after losing) is the mark of a good player... and of an excellent human being.
it was a fateful day. beforehand, a select few players could manage level 30, such as joseph saelee and jani herlevi in ctwc 2022, we played more than 70 levels
It's arguable about which event/moment was the turning point of Classic NES Tetris but to this day I will still nominate this as the single most significant, important and symbolic.
The part I love so much about this video is how humble and supportive in defeat Jonas was. I’ve never seen someone in a sport or game that was almost rooting for the opponent to win, it shows me how passionate he is for Tetris and how happy he is to see a new generation of player to succeed. This video is easily one of my favourite videos I’ve seen in my life due to that reason. Very inspirational people, both Jonas and Joseph in their own way. Hope you both do well this year! :)
Yeah that got me as well. I used to play FPS competitively and I can say that while I am generally a pretty laid back person, I was definitely not a gracious loser. I really wonder what must have been going through Jonas' head at that point. Probably a mix of disappointment in himself that he fell short but also a sense of pride/satisfaction that someone that much younger played such a strong enough game to beat him. To be able to put your own feelings on the backburner to fully take pleasure in someone else's success, that's true sportsmanship.
bro i'm telling you i was thinking the same thing this is like a tetris anime and joseph the MC who studied the best then in his tournament arc beat the some of best player as he goes further then reaches the main boss and beat him all in his first year fucking crazy.
The 16 year old doesn't have all the things to remember, do and whatever in his live at that age then a adult have and thus are better on these things so its a surprise Jonas have got this far anyway but hes a pro so..
Started playing NES Tetris almost a year ago, I have watched this so many times. I am a DAS player and I watch many Jonas videos to help with my stacking. He still to this day a huge inspiration to the Tetris community. I wish he was around to see what this game has come in the past 3 years. RIP Jonas
This might be the best recommendation youtube has ever given me. never watched professional tetris but got completely absorbed by the video! love it! much love to the tetris community!!!
Welcome to the addiction! YT first recommended it to me in late 2016 and I had zero clue about the game, now I can't wait for their vids to come out! The community is SO nice, very different from a lot of gaming communities.
Its Finals week and I am sitting here watching a 40 minute video of something I have never played or had interests in and it was well worth it. Life is crazy!
Well, it sounds kinda smart in my opinion! I mean, you gotta find those hobbies in life that would require you to be looking forward to be doing! Otherwise they would soon just become yet another boring "no-big-of-a-deal"-part of your everyday-routine... 😂
Rest in piece Jonas. I remember when I used to play this game I DM'd you telling you how much you helped me and you responded with such politeness. You were such a good person, streamer, and player. R.I.P.

The man watches in real time as a young upstart kid takes away his crown and he just smiles, applauds, and hugs him. What incredible grace and character. The community will never be the same without him. RIP Jonas, you'll always be the greatest and you will be dearly missed.
but give it up to Jonas! the way Jonas continued to cheer on his competition makes me love tetris even more edit: i've never seen a tetris championship before, no idea why this video was recommended to me but you best believe i am now a fan
I think most games where the competition is indirect is like that. Where its basically realtime but the players cant effect the other players experience in a direct way. Look at speedrunning and the like where competitors cheer eachother on, because in the end, they are fans of the game and appreachiate good plays.
This event is really well run and professionally curated. Really cool to see Jonas being humble in accepting the loss and the host and commentators did a really good job in terms of quality. esports get a bad rap sometimes for being trash talky or cringy but this was top notch all across the board. Seeing Joseph overwhelmed with emotion was so genuine.
Yeah tetris is different from many other esports because most of the community is very constructive. Once you get into it you see players analyzing each others games and giving feedback, really coaching each other and pushing each other. Not just top level players, they even help new players get into the game and encouraging them to take baby steps and milestones, hosting numerous online competitions to give new players the chance to compete, unlike other games that make top level play seem impossible to reach. I just started in March and have a 540k pb thanks to the community, they are all so helpful and wholesome
Coming back to the match that got me into this beautiful community! Still watching this play with the same level of hype I had the first time I watched it! We miss you, Jonas!
This is the greatest video in TH-cam history. 43 minutes of absolute magic. So happy for Joseph. Such a fan of Jonas. THIS IS HIGH ART, PEOPLE. THIS IS AS GOOD AS HUMAN ENDEAVOR GETS. -John

Literally read it all the way through and went to like it before I realized it was John Green. Your comment is the only thing that could make this video better.
...i came to this video because i had a craving for this sort of content after listening to the first half to the anthropocene reviewed, just to find that 10 hours before i arrived here, the narrator of my experience was in this virtual space
Can't believe it's been 3 years since I watched this. Only just got recommended this video again and so much has changed. Joseph no longer the top dog, Jonas no longer with us. I feel glad I got to watch Tetris evolve so much in such a short time, but also sad that Jonas never got to see how far it got too. You will never be forgotten for everything you contributed to the game and the wonderful community surrounding it
Surprised no one noted this yet. 4:32 Joseph peeks at jonas’ screen and sees trouble 4:44 Joseph peeks again to see the clean up Tetris with follow up respect smile Kid is on a whole different level
you can see from the beginning that jonas maybe a bit worried or anxious (?) but idk. for clarification, thats not the reason jonas lose, but because joseph gameplay is really amazing.
This will continue to be one of those moments in gaming history, instantly recognizable and a watershed moment in the grace of ushering in new talents from established masters. Gone too soon, ❤ Jonas.
The memory of not only his competitive legacy in Tetris, but also the quality of his character will never be forgotten. Watch any clip from his twitch streams and you'll see how much of a fun loving person he is. He loved his wife Heather. He wanted to entertain, make people laugh and just have a good time. Please note, I've never even met the guy in person. He positively effected me just through existing and appearing on a camera while playing some videogames. This is beyond an untimely death. It feels unfair to everyone, to the tetris community, to his friends & family, honestly to humanity. Just goddamn depressing. Rest in Peace, but may we always remember the good memories.

I don't think we realized it at the time, but Jonas may have been the greatest DAS player of all time. Respect the great one.
Also 28:27 might be one of favorite quotes from anything ever.
Yeah, pretty sure he was the greatest DAS player of all time.

It's arguable about which event/moment was the turning point of Classic NES Tetris but to this day I will still nominate this as the single most significant, important and symbolic.
Yes, this was the turning point

@Mr.BigBoss7 Experience don't really help in this in one way at this level, only fast reflexes, fast thinking and a sense for the game sort of speak.
The smile Jonas gave watching the last few drops on Joseph's screen before he won was really fantastic
Good sport
*"Time to pass the crown"*
It's respect. Jonas knew he was going to lose, but he is very proud of Jospeh, as he had found someone worth enough to defeat his 7x champion status.

Unlike smash
I think most games where the competition is indirect is like that. Where its basically realtime but the players cant effect the other players experience in a direct way.
Look at speedrunning and the like where competitors cheer eachother on, because in the end, they are fans of the game and appreachiate good plays.

This event is really well run and professionally curated. Really cool to see Jonas being humble in accepting the loss and the host and commentators did a really good job in terms of quality. esports get a bad rap sometimes for being trash talky or cringy but this was top notch all across the board. Seeing Joseph overwhelmed with emotion was so genuine.
Typo Diabetes the broadcasters had a total hard on for Jonas wdym
Yeah tetris is different from many other esports because most of the community is very constructive. Once you get into it you see players analyzing each others games and giving feedback, really coaching each other and pushing each other. Not just top level players, they even help new players get into the game and encouraging them to take baby steps and milestones, hosting numerous online competitions to give new players the chance to compete, unlike other games that make top level play seem impossible to reach. I just started in March and have a 540k pb thanks to the community, they are all so helpful and wholesome
