    One thing I didn't add in my critique of the 'witches you couldn't burn' slogan is that witch-hunts are a contemporary phenomenon occurring globally, with notable occurrences in Sub-Saharan Africa, India, Nepal, and Papua New Guinea. There's a lack of sensitivity towards that fact, I think. Sadly, witch panic is not a thing of the past.

      There's so much to hate about that slogan. I'll add two more:
      1) Even assuming that it was true that only witches were burned, it's statistically more likely that you're the grandchild of one of the executioners and not an escapee.
      2) JK Rowling seems to love that damn slogan, so it blows chunks by association.

    • @kelly-annmaddox
      @kelly-annmaddox  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @1980rlquinn Not sure about the first one.. There weren't THAT many executioners. 😅 Or maybe you meaning something less literal?
      As for the second point, ugh, JK is just such a fucking loser.

      I also cringe at the idea that the “weaker” witches were the ones who succumbed to the trials, while some superior specimens went on to reproduce sacred lines that are obviously today’s witches..

    My number one witchcraft cringe is prosperity magick as a main shtick. There's nothing wrong with spells for material gain, but when I see people selling their craft in exactly the same way as a MLM or get-rich-quick advert, it *really* turns me sour.

    Absolutely agreed on the "We are the granddaughters..." cringe. Has always felt icky to me, for the exact same reasons you expressed.
    Another big cringe for me personally is the tendency to have a very.. grandiose past life? Like how it seems everyone was Cleopatra or a Priestess of Avalon or some kind of Oracle of Delphi. Of course to each their own but it feels a little self aggrandizing.

    • @kelly-annmaddox

    I cringe when people complain that someone charges too much for a tarot reading. It’s like they can charge whatever they want, you don’t have to buy a reading from THAT reader but if you do, you pay THEIR prices. If you want to pay less find someone who charges what you want to pay.

    • @kelly-annmaddox
      @kelly-annmaddox  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      I really don't like it when people tell me I charge too much. It's always back-handed too. 'I would LOVE to be able to work with you but you just charge too much.' Like, I am an award-winning Tarot reader and author and I have put 700 free videos out online, and you don't think I should be able to, like, eat? 🤔 I have also ALWAYS copped shit for having a Patreon and for selling courses. There have been plenty of people who have been blocked on my socials for having a lot to say about me putting things behind a paywall. Those people think my food and rent money just falls into my hands from the fucking sky. 🤣

    binding is an important tool, particularly in situations of stalking, exes, etc. because there are a lot of situations where the legal system/police etc. cannot or will not help, or could make things worse. things that don't quite rise to a legal level but still create large issues in your life, things like that. totally agree with you that it's a position of privilege to moralize against it, and it's a tool I would not want to write off, particularly as it's often a defensive rather than aggressive action. I haven't done a lot of hexing, but again, you never know where you might find yourself, and you certainly don't know where others find themselves. caution is good, prohibition not so much.

    As a research scientist who has a PhD (and a sorcerer too) I apologise on behalf of that insufferable woman who attempted to belittle your practice, we don't claim her. I'd like to think attitudes are changing because in my company of scientists there are several who are openly religious and no one has a bad word to say about them, it's a very respectful atmosphere and as adults we just know that everyone's views are their own and what you believe metaphysically doesn't impact on your knowledge and skill as a scientist.

    What makes me cringe is when "spiritual" people insist that I should love everyone and do so unconditionally...that's unrealistic and toxic to me. I believe that I don't owe love to my abusers and actually one of the exes who manipulated me and cheated on me used to use the concept of spiritual love as a way to keep me around. I later realized that I just lacked self-respect and healthy boundaries at the time. Not saying this is the case for everyone who's been cheated on or abused or manipulated, but it was for me. The whole spiritual love crap used to make me go for broken people because I thought it was my "duty" to love them until they got better....except they would just get worse and use it as an excuse to be abusive. Nowadays, I love my family, my friends, and my pets. Everyone else gets basic human respect and definitely not all the special privileges that come with love!

    I work with Loki and nothing makes me cringe more than telling someone I work with Loki and them saying 'oh be careful he's X and causes problems' like?? I've been working with him for 13 years I don't need you to tell me what my deity is and isn't. I'll also add that I met a tarot reader in uni who told me that if I didn't 'knock on my deck' before starting a reading to dispel bad energy I was 'reading wrong'. The assumption that I don't know what I'm doing without even asking me what my practice looks like is so irritating. This black and white thinking that some people develop in witchcraft makes no sense to me. Isn't the point of this practice the exact opposite of dogma? Why wouldn't I question what is being fed to me if it doesn't feel right to me? Anyway loved the video, you put into words a lot of the things that rub me the wrong way too 😂

      Oh my goddess, the way people always think they need to give the 'Big Bad Loki' warning. 🙄 People on the forums were literally salivating and falling over themselves to tell me to reconsider working with Hel because Loki is a possessive, protective dad who would cause trouble for me. I dunno if that was just projection or what? But Loki hasn't caused me even 5 minutes of trouble in the last 13 years of working with Hel. 😅😅

    my biggest ones?
    1) the word "narcissist" (except for people who actually have npd talking about their experiences), and generally using psychological terms when you could just say "a person who abused me" or "a person who behaved poorly"
    2) the word "quantum" used in any context other than actual quantum theory (not that you have to be a scientist to be interested in quantum theory, but if you're not talking about science then plsss don't use "quantum" as if using a random science word makes your magic more legit)
    3) pseudo-history and pseudo-archaeology - no, not every christian tradition was stolen from paganism... for example.

    #7 -- beautiful explanation! The world is full of broken and corrupt systems are run by broken and corrupt people and those systems do great harm to those they're actually supposed to help. When someone is denied justice they should have received and were even harmed because the system or people in it are twisted, flawed, and unethical, turning to magical means for restorative justice is all that's left.

      Hehe, it is great to look at cringe in a shadow work context. Both in terms of why something makes you cringe and also in terms of any worries you have that people might be cringing at you. Cringe has been so weaponised against people who are trying to be their authentic selves. It can make people scared to be honest. I definitely feel the cringe of telling people about my practice/spirituality in my early days. Because this attracted insincere people. I look back & think I was so innocent & naive.
    I was part of the late 90’s “witch wave” where I discovered paganism & witchcraft. So I was in this mindset that it was something everybody would respect or be interested in tarot & magic etc. I would talk to anybody that asked without hesitation & would even do ritual in public without filter - not for attention just out of feeling “free” to express. Unfortunately, it attracted unwanted attention.
    I cringe thinking about it but at the same time I have a fondness towards my younger self for being brave to explore spirituality and trust what I was experiencing.

    but VERY VERY few things will make me go into that mode than the overly literal card meanings / "this is a wholly bad card" / "this is a wholly good card" (although i think there are more less nuancedly good cards than less nuancedly bad cards, every card has positive and negative elements), anyway, that shit sets me off and i'm working on it,

    48:24 my cringe is when a witch says something that makes me feel like they don’t believe in magic at all. Like they think it’s just a psychological boost. Pushing the idea that magic WONT work if you don’t “act in accord”… I think acting in accord is important because you don’t want to be acting AGAINST your own magic, because our mundane acts also produce energy to the universe, but imo real magic WORKS even if you don’t match it on the material plane. Like if you do a banishing spell… you don’t do anything you wait for it to work. If you do a spell to draw love, it helps if you are actively dating but I dont think it’s required. Many people meet their true love when they aren’t looking. I’ve heard people outright say “it won’t work if you don,t do these mundane things,” and to me that’s saying… it just doesn’t work. That’s not a person who truly believes in magic imo or understands how it works (manipulating energy, correspondences, etc). And they just think its a playful confidence boost.

    • @kelly-annmaddox
      @kelly-annmaddox  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This is such an interesting comment. You have a really good point here. And, like, some witches dooo actually just think magick is a playful confidence boost in the sense that they don't believe there is an energetic element to it. But they should just say so. For some witches, magick is purely self-transformative psychodrama. Perhaps some of the witches who feel that way don't even KNOW they do.
      I am in the same boat as you. I believe it works but I believe it can potentially be hindered by too many counterproductive actions.

  • @0TricksterLove0
    @0TricksterLove0 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I am not a witch any more, but I still enjoy your videos from time to time. However, I do resonate with one you said specifically. I love Tricksters, but everyone always talks negatively about them, and says to stay away from them, so it is this patronising feel people give off when talking about different deities or different entities in pantheons.
    But, I believe if you have a belief in the spiritual sense, it could manifest a lot more easily, so if you believe a Trickster is evil, that evil will manifest for you, if you believe they won't hurt you, that will manifest too, Loki and Eshu and Hermes have been nothing but amazing for me. I have even had some experiences with the Egyptian "demon" Apep that were positive.
    It is always to me, about your mindset and beliefs. If a deity is evil to you, it could easily manifest that way to you as your pre conceived notions of that specific deity not only helps create the situation of what you feel in yourself about the deity and will tar the whole experience, but also seems, from my standpoint, to create a sort of "reality" behind that belief. If you believe something will be evil, would you be shocked if it turned out they were "evil" to you?? It is how you thought, how you believed. And to me, that is the key.
    If you believe Loki is evil, he will be evil to you and maybe you will attribute things that have happened during the day to him, and think of them as evil, but also, you might have a malicious dream about Loki too, or feel a sort of maliciousness from Loki's presence if he does manifest for you.
    Everything is of the mind...
    The mind can easily warp things and make you believe something that just isn't real reality due to your perceptions...
    So, knowing everything is of the mind, it really ticks me off when people patronise me or others for liking Tricksters, Tricksters they see as evil.

    I divulged to my ex friend that I bought dried sunflower petals from Greece for a summer solstice because I wanted to connect to something from Greece since I work with Greek deities. I knew that they were not going to get here in time so I ordered a small pack on Amazon. She blew up on me saying that I'm not a real witch or a pagan the Gods especially Hecate (I don't work with Hecate) would approve this etc. I said my peace to her and blocked her. Then about a week after, the place where I ordered from refunded me my money because of reasons...so it never came..so the fight could have never happened. However, I am glad that it did because I was starting to hope something would happen between us to where we were no longer friends...she was getting to be too much for me. I did a fiery wall of protection just in case.
    The first time I heard "We are the granddaughters of the witches you couldn't burn" I thought it was neat but then the second time I heard it it felt off 😂 I know why it felt off the second time I heard it. Thank you for bringing up the men. I am learning to choose my battles with people who do not agree. About 3 years ago my parents were in the hospital, I went to go visit them. I visited my Dad first then my Mom. While I was with my Mom my aunt Barbara arrived to visit both of them. My aunt said that when we are done we needed to talk. We left my Mom's room and she said that my Dad told her that I was a witch..which made me upset. So we had a polite debate in the hallway. That year for my birthday and Christmas I got Christian stuff. But now, she has mostly accepted it and accepted that I'm pagan too.
    I feel like their is going to be more fake spiritual people to get into people's pants mostly because of the ✨astrology girlies✨ and angel number girlies becoming popular online. Does the guy actually believe in that or does he know that you are into it and will send you a message at 11:11 tricking you into thinking it's a sign? Yeah, I don't like the patronizing. I saw a tiktok live where a woman was doing tarot readings and she asked the question once shuffle for like 3 seconds pull the card out without looking at the card and say yes or no, put the card back and repeat. To me, you can't connect to a person's energy in like 2 seconds get an answer then repeat that dozens of times. Ugh yes! I can't stand witches who shame others who charge their services...like SORRY we live in a capitalistic society!!!!

    I interpreted the saying like the best witches have been successful in escaping from being burned, and there's a power in that. "We are still here!" -Matrix & Hardcore never dies style. Weeds are amazing. That the saying was pointing in the direction of that kind of power.

      Isn't that.. distasteful? To say, 'The weaker people burned?' 😬 I dunno. I'm not into that, personally, but that's just me. Not saying I am right or wrong. But that would be like saying that the men who came back from the 2nd world war were stronger and more worthy of glory than those who died, or something.

      @kelly-annmaddox Oh, absolutely, I don't like the saying, it was just the only way I could make sense of it. Trying to come up with reasons why I think it could mean something to anyone else.

      @@kunstenaresprinses Ahh, I see. Yeah I think that mentality is in there somewhere, for sure.

    The example with The Fool really pinpoints an issue with those kinds of at-face-value readings. Some people will talk about the character depictions as a specific personality when really they're more like the negative space in a black and white print. These figures are parts of a concept, they're not "people". The character isn't the whole card.
