    Don’t be so hard on yourself, Dawn. Watching your videos is like stopping by a friend’s house to see how the renovation is coming along. I’m with you on cleaning. Even in the midst of demolition and construction just cleaning up makes a world of difference. When I was a boy I loved going up into the attic, what you call a loft, was so much fun. Once, while I was in hospital recovering from surgery, our son and a friend decided to explore the attic. His friend fell through the ceiling between two joists. No injuries.

      Aww thank you, we really love that! ❤️ I think in a way that’s the luxury of not knowing what we’re doing most of the time! lol we can’t give an instructional video so we’re just us, bumbling along the best we can 😂 I really do love a good clean, tidy and organised…helps keep my brain in order too! 😂
      I know with the attic…why was it a fun place to be?! We loved going up there! Wow, to fall through and no injuries! That was lucky…I doubt when we were kids we thought about the dangers of going through lol

      Oh quite often we record and there is no sound, or the microphones aren't on, or the light is blasting the camera so it is all washed out.... like this video a few times... but yes, we are only human and doing our best.

    That was a great episode, ridge tiles sorted, windows insulated with wool. Rafters dusted and cleaned, insulated, temporary ceiling hung, attic floor insulated. Loved your stories of getting into the loft as children, was in there too, I did similar things also. Your new fire guard is very nice. It really is coming together in leaps and bounds. Well done Dawn and Ben

    Getting the ridge tiles done is awesome, saves a lot of potential damage to the new insulation and boards. It will also help getting the humidity levels down. 👍

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      He did such a good job for us on the ridge tiles. The humidity in the room now it is insulated and no holes is down to 60-65% making the room feel more comfortable. Most evenings the room is up to 19 degrees C. The kitchen in the farmhouse is normally 20-22 degrees and humidity is about 40% most of the time.
      Thank you again :-)

    I agree with @pitsnipe5559 and others who have commented - don't be so hard on yourself - your videos are great.....I know from my own experience that talking to a camera is not easy and you aren't the only one who has spent a lot of time talking to a camera that wasn't switched on. The more I watch your videos the more thankful I am that the building we are renovating is nowhere near as big as yours. Keep up the good work!

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  ปีที่แล้ว

      Annoying isn’t it…when you reach out to turn off the camera only to realise it wasn’t running! 🫣 it does get easier the talking to the camera, still feels strange at times…Ben told me to just think of it like telling a family member what you’ve been up to, that made it easier for me. Thank you very much…we’re getting there slowly but surely and you will too. 😊

      Ah we are so pleased with the new ridge tiles, Sean did a great job.
      We only have the one tradesman, which is Sean and even if our roof fell in, he would still take his time getting to us hahaha. He has fixed the leaking roof with some new tiles when we first came, 3 months later he uncapped the chimneys and now the ridge tiles. We aim to do as much as we can ourselves, but like you say, it is always handy to know one or two trades.

    Well done guy's the ceiling looks fantastic.. It great to see you both being able to handle the insulation. When I was a child many many moons ago, I was never in our attic it seem to to be a scary place. When I had my own home my husband used to stand on my shoulders to get into the attic getting Christmas decorations the children Christmas toy's etc. We were both skinny people at the time. 26 year's ago, I had bought a Stira and and it's best ladder ever, I am 65 and fly up and to the attic 👍😉🇮🇪☘️Eire

      It is nice to have the ceiling up, although it is a shame the sides didn't go to plan. We will look at getting some boards on the sides after we do our bedroom ceiling. We can extend the rafters giving more space from the tiles. Then we can go back and do Lukas' side ceiling.
      Yes, a few boards for the Christmas decorations are a must and I am sure a couple of more things will find their way up.

    It's coming along! I like the way the paneling looks, it may grow on you. I think if you did your bedroom insulation it would help make the house warmer and help keep the heat in much better and then drying out would be more successful. I am so glad your roofer person was able to make it over, what a relief that must have been. Would they approve an extension on the back to expand the bathroom as is to include that area the shower is already in, you could do it with all the rocks about and keep the aesthetic (or keep it as an outdoor shower)- just a thought, or would you expand it to under the stair case? An AGA stove hooked up to radiators would work in that climate, maybe you could do a fundraiser through buy me a coffee to get one and put in a radiator system. Keep going with the windows- every bit you do will keep you that much warmer in the cold winter nights. I am hoping you get that front door properly fixed soon and that is high on your list. Quick question if you have power then why are you still running the generator?

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for a fantastic comment!
      Yes the panelling actually looks better than we thought it might. Working on getting the bedroom insulation underway, I've vacuumed the landing roof space and almost finished on the bedroom today, so fingers crossed we can get some insulation up before Christmas in both of those and start to keep the warmth in the house properly 😀
      Oh my goodness we were so pleased when the roofer said he could come and do that for us. All rain stopped coming in now and also just the ridge tiles being replaced stopped a lot of cold coming in too.
      As for extensions, I think you can put a 40m2 extension on the back of the house without any planning permission so that might be a future option. We are planning at present to have both bedrooms with an en suite and then the bathroom downstairs will become just a small cloakroom under the stairs, so that can reclaim some of the hallway back.
      We have plans for having a range that feeds radiators too at some point, just not sure when for that...because as you indicate it can be quite expensive. Buy me a coffee isn't something we'd thought about doing to be honest...but we certainly wouldn't rule it out...we just wasn't sure if it was the right way to go. Mainly because I think TH-cam and all that goes with it is something quite new to us 😆
      All windows are done now and it has made a huge difference all round, which we're really pleased about.
      The front door is on the priority list most definitely. We were just going to replace it but I've had a proper look at it recently and I think it's actually worth repairing because apart from the obvious, its in not bad condition.
      Yes, the generator...our videos are a little behind but the electric connected one is present time. So, most of the videos, other than the electric connected video, were filmed whilst we didn't have electric.
      We've only been connected a week. 😊 Again, thank you for taking the time to comment like you did, it's really appreciated. 😍

    So glad the roof is repaired. Have to admit that I do not understand much about old stone houses. I guess they are supposed to breath. Modern homes in Canada have vapor barrier attached to the underside of the ceiling beams, insulation is much thicker, and attics have vents to prevent condensation. We also have an access hatch for inspection and repairs. As always, you are making steady progress.

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi John, thanks for watching and commenting as always, we look forward to seeing your comments.
      Dawn is the the one who has done all the reading, so my info is second hand for you.
      Basically......lime plaster on the inside of the walls in the rooms allow moisture through the breathable lime plaster, and then the lime mortar and then gets dried by the wind and sun as the moisture reaches the outside walls. Rain can go on the outside render but dries again with sun, warm and wind.
      The Cement we have on the front of our house has cracked, so although waterproof, the cracks allow water seepage and then the water cannot escape from behind the cement. This is then trapped in the walls and lime mortar. Moisture from inside the house, from cooking, showering (one day), boiling a kettle and in it's most basic form, living in the house, cannot escape because the walls are already damp where it is stuck. You then get damp walls and floors etc.
      Dawn can answer it much better than I can, maybe she will add to my reply if I have missed something..... She has just given me the nod to click reply though.
      Lime also lets the walls / house move with the seasons without cracking. Cement just cracks.

      Without the howling wind coming through the windows the rooms already feel warmer. Even our bedroom which doesn't have a ceiling or insulation yet. Lukas' bedroom is much warmer now and the humidity as I type is down to 63%, so the walls and room are drying out.
      Sean is great. He doesn't realise how much it means to us for him to do something like the ridge tiles.

      Thank you! I did try that and it did fizz but I wasn’t sure if that’s because of the lime plaster underneath it….i will try and get a cleaner piece and give that a go. So glad you are using sheep wool ! Must be great to install and not using masks and gloves. So environmentally friendly as well. I noticed you are not using a vapour barrier, not needed? You might try putting window plastic over the inside of your windows, it really helps. you can buy the kit that you cut and blow dry tight, or like me, buy thicker clear plastic at the fabric store and build a simple frame to stretch it over. Then I caulk it tight to the window frame. With your windows, you could do two frames so you can still open the windows. You folks get to have your learning curve, you are moving along quickly and of course, as parents, focussing on your child's comfort before your own. hugs

      @thecornerhouseproject  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So others can see the answer your question, although you have answered it yourself lol.
      Sheeps wool will hold up o 33% of it's own weight in moisture. In the damper months it holds on to it until it can be released when it warms up from room warmth or in the dryer seasons. So we don't need a vapour barrier. With that said though, when we do the roof (or get the roof done) we will have a barrier under the tiles.
      We have been looking at the Perspex windows coverings but have seen the plastic film. Whatever we use it will make a big difference keeping the cold of the glass from falling.
      Yep, in our previous previous house , yes, 3 houses ago lol, our bedroom wasn't decorated for 14 years and we moved out on the 15th year. Their happiness is more important than ours :-)

    The space in your ceiling is massive! You could literally make that a third floor attic space up there!! I’d insulate it to the roof peaks, plywood the walls, and make it a fort for grandkids! Or at the least make it storage space for seasonal stuff like Christmas decorations. 🤷🏼‍♀️😂❤

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think in time that’s what we will do, a few rafters need replacing anyway, and we can stick some more strength in at the same time so we can use the space up there for storage as we have no attic storage at present, so all Christmas decorations and keepsakes are in our bedroom! 😂 Storage is space is what we lack at the moment. 🫣

  • @SerendipitySharon
    @SerendipitySharon ปีที่แล้ว +2

    to answer my own question: Sheep Wool Insulation absorbs moisture from the atmosphere during damp seasons and releases it during the dry seasons. For this reason, a vapour barrier is not required and the material can be placed between the joists, directly on top of the ceiling below. So great!

      @thecornerhouseproject  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We love how you have gone and looked it up. Thank you for sharing your finding on here for everyone else to read.

    Your son is going to be living like a king there in his snug, clean, warm bedroom. =)
    Vacuuming the beams was certainly worthwhile. It removed- what? a couple of gallons? - of cobwebs, mold, mildew, & potential pests/eggs; and whatever moisture was clinging into them. It also gave you a chance to inspect all the joists & rafters, & make sure no problems were developing. Finally, it gave you a reasonably clean environment to work in. If the loft space were still Cobweb City, you'd probably have needed/wanted a mask for placing the joist insulation.
    I've seen the fluffy pink insulation still being sold here in the US; & it looks just as horrible to work with as ever.
    So glad you got the new ridge tiles in. They look beautiful. & Sean(sp?) is a treasure; as is any tradesman who turns up (more or less) when thy say they will, delivers good work at a decent price, & is willing to work you in in an emergency.
    & how you know you're done waffling, is when the camera battery runs out. 😜

      I hadn’t thought thought of it like that with the hoovering with all the things you listed but you’re right. They looked great and almost new by the the time I’d finished. There’s a couple of rafters that will have to take a closer look at come the new year, so it was worth a closer look. We definitely wouldn’t have wanted to stick that nice new clean insulation up with all of the cobwebs that were up there.
      I remember the old Insulation from the attic when I was a kid…it made you itch like crazy after you’d been in there with it!
      Oh us too with the ridge tiles, Sean did an amazing job on them because the timbers aren’t the greatest and he had to replace lots of broken tiles before he was then able to do the ridge tiles. He’s a really nice, chilled and laid back bloke too, I think we are very lucky to have been given his name on recommendation.

    Absolutely brilliant - love the ceiling!! I'll bet it was a lot warmer. I'd be filling a tub with water in front of the fire and having a bath. Well done you two!! toss a plank on the rafters and shove some boxes up there so you can do your room and whole house will be warmer. remember the heat putty you used to fix the stove... use some of that to point the stone in the chimney where the smoke comes through.
    lime plaster has different consistencies depending on the sand used to mix it, Venetian plaster is mixed with marble dust. Take a plaster sample from your wall to a building supply they should be able to let you know what mix it is. Sands used should be well graded with a range of grain sizes, which for most plaster, render and mortar work will range from 5mm down to 75 micron. The difference is for building a wall the coarser sand for rendering the wall a medium grain sand and for smooth plastering a fine grade sand that pigments or (dusts like marble) can be added for colour and texture. decorative plastering would mainly be done with plaster paris or venetian plasters. You could have many different kinds of textured walls depending on your preference and the mix - have fun looking it up and see if you would like to do any of them.

      Ooh I like the idea of the putty will have to see how much we have left.
      I will look into that with the plaster. The one on the video is really smooth, I immediately thought of it being a modern gypsum plaster because all the lime in the rest of the house isn’t smooth, but I then watched a TH-cam video of a piece of set lime putty and it looked very similar, so that made me wonder it is actually lime after all lol confusing this renovation lark! 🤣

Our old house didn’t have a loft/attic because we had living space there. Our current house has a drop down staircase, which my husband is grateful for, and so are the cats. Cool to learn how the windows were put in. I used to hear the old fellow say they set the windows in, guess they actually meant the set them in and it wasn’t a just a figure of speech. You guys are doing a great job! The vacuum of the rafters is smart, not just a Dawn thing! A clean worksite is a safe worksite. With the identifying of that plaster, I’m wondering if it is lime sand and concrete. I heard another Irish renovater saying that that is what they were going to use on their stone ruin. Yours looked to me like lime and sand, but it was much more coarse than lime putty used in the hotter climates like Spain & Portugal. Tim & Jo on The Renovation Couple used a lot of lime in his previous stone house in the UK. So might be worth checking out their old videos. Love using that sheepswool in the tricky places instead of that horrible expanding foam. Cheers from hot AUSTRALIA.

      I think she means to "fir out" the walls, to provide attachment for the plaster board sheets. We typically use 2" x 3" nominal lumber, laid up vertically at 16" apart on center. Then when you hang the 4'x8' drywall (plasterboard), they'll be flush with the light switches and other outlets (depending on the depth of those boards they're mounted on). Then they won't stick out from the walls, and you avoid patching all the plaster. We love watching your show and love the progress in each episode! @@thecornerhouseproject

      Thank you very much. Getting there bit by bit to get us through winter. Being able to live indoors and not the tent, in a warm, comfortable fashion is like a revelation to us.

    If insulation went side ways across ceiling, you wouldn’t have to cut it.🙋‍♂️🇦🇺Woops, I now see that you did!

    Don’t you screw the ply to ceiling over the insulation rather than staple it?

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is just temporary Sharon, certainly in the second bedroom, ours will probably be the last room to get finished. The ply ended up being screwed up there as the staples over time started to pull out.

    Hi folks, loving your channel :-) Brilliant you’re using sheep’s wool insulation as it’s so environmentally friendly. Hope you don’t mind me asking, but whereabouts in England are our form originally? I can usually place accents but I can’t yours!

      Thank you! ☺️ we were shown the door and gap filler by another commenter and it’s been amazing to use, so it seemed a good idea to do the same for the roof space too especially with houses like ours with the stone and lime.
      Haha well I think our accents are a little mixed up as I’m from Kent and Ben is from the Midlands, specifically Worcester and I think we’ve both taken on each others here and there 😂

    How do I find the episode on the repair or replacement of the roof of the corner house?

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Unfortunately we didn’t film it as it was the very beginning of our TH-cam journey Mack in May ‘23 and we weren’t sure about asking the bloke we asked to patch it up if we could film him 😂 he did a great job though in stopping all the leaks. There’s a couple of areas that we need to sort in the future but for now it’s all holding tight.

    Is there lead in the paint?

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  ปีที่แล้ว

      We actually don’t know…we haven’t tested it as yet. I would suspect with how old the house is, there is a possibility that it is. I keep meaning to get a tester kit.

      If there is itll only be in gloss not emulsion... Emulsion was traditionally made with chalk then later with liquid vinyl.
      Afaik it never had lead in it. Lead was only put in to make gloss pop .
