The more I listen to SB...the more I realize how great this band was, is, are. I only "discovered" them in the early 2000's. I am going back and watching a lot of the older videos and purchasing some of their older music as well as their current.

It's so awesome, that after all these years, we still see Al on the right, Ryo on the left and Dave in the back, with Neal and Nick occasionally do a track or even a whole show with the band and its only two "new members" in all those years, Ted and Jimmy.
My first album with the band infact was 'The Light", so I am a 'first-hour'-fan and proud of it. It's really cool to grow and develop not only with a bands music, but also with the band itself. They made and still make and write the 'soundtrack of my life'!
All the best for Neal, Al, Ryo, Dave, Nick, Ted, Jimmy and of course Stan & John!
Thanks guys, you wrote some of the best music ever! That goes for all of you... :)

How can people criticize Neal for being a Christian? It's his belief, what is the point in criticizing another person's believe unless you are too insecure in your own beliefs ...

Flying Colors is legitimately the best record in the past few years. Never has such a task been tackled so effectively, of creating something new yet familiar, prog but also pop, country rock and even jazz. The lineup speaks for itself, but the record goes further than the sum of its parts. Truly astounding, I recommend it.

Yep, glad I'm not the only one who noticed this. A lot of his lyrics in Spock's Beard were about God or looking for God. It just wasn't quite as obvious as in his more recent music. The Doorway, The Light, My Shoes, and plenty of others...

If you sincerely enjoy Neal's (and SB's) music as much as I do, there's no reason to take offense to Neal's born again Christianity. First off, his solo stuff is incredible, lyrics aside (though I think they are very powerful and I'm by no means a die hard Christian). I respect everything about Neal Morse and his career. I don't understand how people have such issues with his personal choices. I met the man...he's still very real and very dedicated. He still makes incredible music.

I'm not going to lie: I'm an atheist, and I love ? and Sola Scriptura. They're just solid records. Good songwriting, good tunes, good lyrics.
I mean, I like Rush's late-70's stuff, and I'm about as far from an Objectivist as you can be, philosophically. Doesn't make it bad art.

At this point in SB's career and for several albums afterward, l don't think you could call Neal's lyrics "Christian" any more than Kerry Livgren's lyrics on the first few Kansas albums. I would call them "spiritual" and "searching", perhaps.
And l must say that anyone out there who is put off by overtly Christian content is missing out on literally one of the top 10 guitarists who we have been fortunate enough to have with us for over 50 years--Phil Keaggy.
He is certainly not going to show up in some stupid Rolling Stone Best Of list. He was around the same time as Hendrix and Jimi publicly acknowledged him along with Rory Gallagher, Terry Kath, and Billy Gibbons.
If the religiosity turns you off Keaggy has put out several instrumental albums among the 50-ish albums he has released.
Do yourself a favor and check him out...you will be musically rewarded.

I did the lighting for this fest and had the honor of working with Kevin all weekend, not to mention Spock's Beard and all the other amazing bands. It is hard to explain but the bond guys behind the scenes working to make this kind of experience great for people is what l imagine is similar to the bond guys have that go through a war. That is also why l was stage crew or manager at Progday for 20 years. I am honored to have been a "war buddy" of Kevin Gilbert's. The hug and exaggerated "l love you man!" he gave me when he left l will treasure, and be haunted by, for the rest of my life.

@KingCrimson776 Punk was the back lash against the great Prog bands of the early 70s - Yes, Genesis, Rush and ELP. Complex musical and vocal arrangements leave a lot of music listeners stranded. Their musical bones don't vibrate to it the way ours do. The standard response is often to ridicule it on grounds of musical snobbery or (as you say) to denigrate the value of technical musical ability. It has always been, and will always be so. Long live Prog.

No, not true. They were not available due to a schedule conflict. In 1996 if l recall they were busy recording Beware Of Darkness, and were unavailable.
I am not disputing your account but l certainly know Peter was on top of it at the time (as an advice giver at the time) and he absolutely would have booked them if possible. They most certainly would have been less expensive than Deus Ex Machina....but we are lucky their legendary set happened instead.

@ZeroWhiteNothing I agree. I'm agnostic and even though I don't believe in the judeo-christian god I respect people's right to believe in one, as long as they don't want to push their religion down my throat. I love Neal's solo music... lyrics are just lyrics. If I want to listen to the lyrics that get through to me I listen to Pink Floyd

@ZeroWhiteNothing (The Yes bootleg you refer to is just that, it isn't part of the official Yes catalog). Rick Wakeman is one of my heroes and so is Bach, who claimed to have been inspired by religion but then so did every other composer of his era - he simply followed the prevailing Zeitgeist of his times. Progressive *can* be like Death, have a listen to Opeth, probably the best Progressive Metal band of our times.

@ZeroWhiteNothing I don't criticise Neil Morse for being a Christian but I don't think his lyrics suit the prog style of SB and Transatlantic. Jon Anderson's lyrics weren't about anything in particular and complemented the music perfectly. Neil Morse's lyrical ideas can occasionally drag the music down to the level of happy clappy Sunday morning in the pews.
