I've been a Genesis afficionado for several decades (1970s Nursery Cryme - Wind and Wuthering). This is the first time I've ever listened to a Spock's Beard track. I think I have just begun a new musical journey!
just amazing from start till the end , doesn't sound like any other band , including the Floyds , the Crimsons & Genesis , they have their own Concept , Bravo
This is always the first song I hit when I listen to this album. I know the light and go your own way are considered the “classics” from this album but there’s just something about this tune....classic spocks beard
Nectarine Dreams I’ve listened to The Light front to back more times than I can count. Just because you hit “the water” then maybe “go the way you go” or “the light” doesn’t mean you “aren’t listening” to the album, man.
Beware of Darkness is pretty great too and the kindness of strangers is no slouch either. DFN is probably the weakest link but still pretty good. Snow is also pretty good(especially for a double). Unfortunately I don't really know the post Neal albums.
Yes, the new album is now due to be released in early 2013 (date TBA). We'll begin taking pre-orders soon for the limited edition which will drop prior to its worldwide record label release. I realize many fans still struggle with Neal's departure in 2002 in a similar fashion as when Peter Gabriel left Genesis. However, I do believe that Nick did a stellar job during his tenure with the Beard. Ted is an amazing vocalist and musician. Please give us a chance: You're in for a treat! Cheers, ~Sonya
I forgot how crazy this song is! I heard it before a long time ago, but holy crap, now I realize how to the point it is. It made me laugh because I forgot and wasn't expecting it.
00:00 -A) Introduction/The Water 01:47 -B) When It All Goes to Hell 05:51 -C) A Thief in the Night 08:43 -D) F U 11:28 -E) I'm Sorry 13:20 -F) The Water (Revisited) 14:07 -G) Runnin' the Race 17:13 -H) Reach for the Sky
Since Neil started his journey towards Christian music you definitely won't hear him use the f-bomb in any of his music which makes this track unique in his catalog.
Yeah, the whole idea is the juxtaposition of the "fuck you" and "I'm sorry" sequences. I love it how naïve it sounds though, Neal trying to be a bad boy. He's such a lovable goof. :D
Ive been listening to this band for many years but i still have no idea what this song is about... Is it about the actual water??? Please can someone help me out i need to know!!
Think of it as a metaphor for growing up. There are a lot of direct references to parental abandonment, being pressured to feel like your life is a race, only to find out later that there are no winners and life is a race against death, references to acne and macking on a lady, rejecting the help of others because you feel like they wouldn't understand you but later realizing all you really wanted was to be understood. I think it paints a very clear picture. He is the water. He can be stormy and unforgiving but at a moment's notice calm down and be peaceful. He is also the water because he is experiencing social life as a liquid being, someone who is a loner, who doesn't let themselves be influenced by others, someone who no matter what carves the chaotic path they carve with nothing to stop them.
Thanks alot Dan, now i will get even more enjoyment out of the song! It really does make sense, im just very bad at understanding meaning behind certain songs. Especially in Prog music :P
I believe it starts out as him being born, literally, hence the "water" and "red sky" as in, being in the womb and being alone and in charge. The FUCK YOU section would probably be about him coming out of the womb, as in being snatched out without his consent. The remaining would be about puberty, love, "running the race" and so on, eventually go on to death. Although dan might be right as well, im taking it much more literal at some parts.
Ivanyi, I do not compare Spock's Beard to Genesis, i'm also a huge Genesis fan for the past 30 years, i just say that they both (genesis and SB) do Prog Rock and not prog metal.... You're the on who compare Spock's Beard to DT in you first comment and i think you're wrong... But please don't get me wrong, i'm also a fan of DT, i saw them live many times!
Haha! For me, it's wayyyyy better than DT ;) DT is metal prog, SB is pure real prog in the vein of all the master of prog like Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd, Camel, Marillion...
Too bad for you Yuri, When i listend to Rush, Kansas, Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd, Gentle Giant, Spock's Bears i did not feel old, i just feel good and peacefull, in perfect harmony! Everyone have their own tastes ;)
I swear i read this has been pushed to 2013. I struggle with their post neal morse stuff..even though some of it is awesome.. they have had another lineup change since their last album. Ted Leonard is replacing Nick D'Virgilio. I saw ted in 2011 perform with them and he does a very good job. also just read that Neal Morse has co written with the band for their upcoming album!
I'm new to them and after listening to more I can tell you're completely right! I feel like they're basically a mix of every progressive style possible from the 70s but slightly more modern
No Brayden, you're totally right, theres a lot of Genesis but i can definitely heard the Pink Floyd inspiration at the end of the song, with all the female backing vocals, made me think of The Great Gig in the Sky...
Still one of the finest Spocks Beard, nay, modern prog rock tracks written. Reach for the Sky gets me in the feels every time.
I've been a Genesis afficionado for several decades (1970s Nursery Cryme - Wind and Wuthering). This is the first time I've ever listened to a Spock's Beard track. I think I have just begun a new musical journey!
Their first album The Light is nothing less than a masterpiece!
Give it a try, you'll love it!
just amazing from start till the end , doesn't sound like any other band , including the Floyds , the Crimsons & Genesis , they have their own Concept , Bravo
This song is so fucking good it hurts.
Dammitall, this video cost me 5,000 dollars
I listened to it, and now I have to buy a mellotron...
I have some of the best mellotron vst synths that I use with my music. :).
A bass guitar would be cheaper..just saying
@@themourningdove7208 I have one already
This is always the first song I hit when I listen to this album. I know the light and go your own way are considered the “classics” from this album but there’s just something about this tune....classic spocks beard
You're not listening to the album if you're hitting this song first
Nectarine Dreams
I’ve listened to The Light front to back more times than I can count. Just because you hit “the water” then maybe “go the way you go” or “the light” doesn’t mean you “aren’t listening” to the album, man.
A hint of Jazz is always nice
is it bad that I literally only come here for the FU segment and i'm a christian. lol love Neal.
Haha! No worries dude, it's ok, i'm sure you gonna be fine! :)
"Fuck You" is the best part of this song!
Fuck You is the best part I agree.
Fuckin Jesus.
listen to the next section 10 times my son. go and say fuck you some more.
Spock's Beard The light and V my favorites!
Beware of Darkness is pretty great too and the kindness of strangers is no slouch either. DFN is probably the weakest link but still pretty good. Snow is also pretty good(especially for a double). Unfortunately I don't really know the post Neal albums.
This is why I love prog. Songs are just songs, they’re a journey
I’ve seen the band live they are incredible

"F.. YOU" suite - best song of SB!
I forgot how crazy this song is! I heard it before a long time ago, but holy crap, now I realize how to the point it is. It made me laugh because I forgot and wasn't expecting it.
I am the ocean King I could do anything💯
This song is a masterpiece.
00:00 -A) Introduction/The Water

The mighty, mighty Spock's Beard!! Look for their 11th studio album coming later this Fall (2012).
Al was on fire during these sessions
Phenomenol BBB this band kicks booty
Sounds as badass now as it did in 1995.
Whenever I’m antagonistic I list to The Water 😎
Indeed a great album! Thanks for posting!

I'm soooo sorry! I really am sooo soooo sorry

5:04 Close to the Edge!!!
You're welcome my friend!!!
Thanks for the support;)

I love the name of the band. Is that some reference to that bad "Star Trek" episode?
Yep!
Not bad. Much worse ST episodes. Lol.
I can think of a few people to direct this at...
Rock Progresivo Sinfónico¡¡¡
8:57 , that's not the Christian Neal Morse right there xD
Paden: The Prog Master I've found you...........
but he said "Im sorry" after that
Yeah, the whole idea is the juxtaposition of the "fuck you" and "I'm sorry" sequences.
I love it how naïve it sounds though, Neal trying to be a bad boy. He's such a lovable goof. :D
No, apparently not.
9:03 to be precise. ;)
Ive been listening to this band for many years but i still have no idea what this song is about... Is it about the actual water??? Please can someone help me out i need to know!!
I really don't know, maybe you should find a Neal Morse Facebook fan page and ask the question there....
even better - reddit

It's like Dream Theater and beyond!
I'm the one of the biggest Genesis fan of the world, but I don't compare this band to Genesis.

I dl'd a copy of this album and this song ends at 19:48 wtf?
Sometimes..Steely Dan..
Spock's Beard = Modern Pink Floyd
not even close, more like Genesis
I'm new to them and after listening to more I can tell you're completely right! I feel like they're basically a mix of every progressive style possible from the 70s but slightly more modern
***** It's ok
+MrYoyoyigitiyo Genesis not Pink Floyd!
