You don't say it all that often, but "I don't buy tools that aren't necessary." is a JC classic worthy of putting on merch!!

We used to be allowed to service the spring side of the brake chamber, but people were taking the clamp loose without caging the spring and got a bit of a surprise. 🤣🤣
I can’t remember if you talked about the geometry between the air can and slack adjuster on the Peterbilt project, but that’s something people seem to screw up a lot too when replacing brake chambers. Might make a good educational video.
We used to have a 30/30 sitting around with the spring removed to scare the new guy. We tell him we got the clamp off, but it wasn’t separating and all you could see was heels and asses running. 😬

Very informative for people who want to learn about air brake systems! I'm glad I grew up around this stuff it made getting my class a cdl at 18 so much easier . I think all cdl drivers should know about this stuff before heading out on the road ...not staying they have to be a mechanic but it helps so much to know what they are looking at and how it works rather than just the buzz words to pass the test

Very informative vid. The reason they’re called 30/30 is that the surface area of each diaphragm is 30 square inches. Also there is the “piggyback “ option for replacing the chamber. Saves time provided the existing push rod and clevis are in good shape.

I have two new 30/30 for my truck wasn’t sure how to measure and cut them. Now I see clearly how to do it. Thanks. Plus one question. My truck is a three axle and it only has the 30/30 on the first drive axle. It’s a 1980 Peterbilt. Is this common? Thanks in advance

Hehe.. Have a guy at work that says the square air inlets are "metric" brake cans.. Haven't felt the need to change this yet, it amuses me.

Hey j.c. I have a request for the editor.....when you put text up on the video explaining what you are doing, can you leave the words up on the screen a little longer, so I can read them without pausing. 👍

I asked him that awhile ago and he said we’re supposed to stop the video if we have to, to read the text. But I agree with you it would be nice for them to dwell a little longer.

It's always a good idea to replace maxi brakes in pairs. Cracked axle housing and bad tire would put that truck out of service.

I don't remember the numbers that were quoted during the Air Brake class i took 30 plus years ago but the instructor claimed there was enough spring pressure to send a 150 pound man x number of feet in the air. And also of an accident reconstruction on either side of an interstate one side the Truck was so torn up that the brake chamber came apart and the spring sent a part of the chamber across the highway and killed a driver. Weather either are true I have no idea but both seem plausible.

Every time I watch a video of someone servicing the brakes on a commercial truck, I get a little mad at how needlessly complicated the hydraulic drum brakes on my pickup truck are.
