During a nuclear test, the French government inadvertently mutates a lizard nest; years later, a giant lizard makes its way to New York City. Dr. Niko Tatopoulos (Matthew Broderick), an expert on the effects of radiation on animals, is sent by the U.S. government to study the beast. When the creature, dubbed "Godzilla" by news outlets, emerges, a massive battle with the military begins. To make matters worse, Niko discovers that Godzilla has laid a nest of 200 eggs, which are ready to hatch.

This Godzilla movie was definitely something else. This movie got a mass ton of marketing, some of the cast members of The Simpsons, and even after this movie’s release it got an animated series. A lot of people probably remember this movie a lot, but honestly the main part of the movie I remember was Matthew Broderick saying “That’s a lot of fish…”

I'm about to watch one of the most entertaining yet poorly rated movies of all time, in my opinion. "Godzilla" from 1998 may not be well-liked by many due to various reasons, which I can understand. However, I cannot deny how impressive the monster was in the film. Was one of the reasons why Peter Jackson’s remake of King Kong got put on hold because of this and the remake of Mighty Joe Young was released in 1998 and because of the poor reception of this, Disney lost faith in Mighty Joe Young giving it a Christmas resulting in it bombing at the box office. Definitely recommend the remake of Mighty Joe Young, an underrated gem along with the best animatronic gorilla effects ever put on screen thanks to Rick Baker.

The Anchorman plays Kent Brockman, Smithers, Mr. Burns, and Reverend Lovejoy, the guy with the camera plays Moe and Appu, and there’s a moment with a woman with a cast on her arm, she plays Bart, Ralphie, and Nelson.

“What did people think of this Godzilla back then?” asks Tim, so innocently. And to answer that, I have to bring you back to 1997.
The hype train for this movie was starting and would not let up one bit until the day of release that next summer. We were bombarded with ads *everywhere* saying “His eye is as big as this billboard!” “His claws are as long as this bus” “He’s taller than this building!” “His head is longer than this subway train!” And above all “Size DOES Matter!!!”
The thing is - none of the prerelease material showed us what Godzilla looked like. Maybe a foot, maybe an eye, but that’s about it; we never saw the whole creature. If I remember correctly, the promotional tour *was not allowed* to discuss what Godzilla looked like.
And then I saw the movie after all that and, well, immediately knew why they were so reluctant to show their Godzilla.

Edit: i kinda felt bad for this Godzilla because he's just an animal trying to survive. He wasn't even going out of his way to destroy things either. It was mostly by accident or self-defense. As some born in the early 2000s, this was my introduction to Godzilla, so I've kind always been one of its biggest defenders. I think if you look at it as less of a true Godzilla film, and just as a generic monster movie/b-movie, then it's a fun and wonderfully cheesy ride.

On Godzilla's speed, he can run at about 200 miles per hour with his stride. In a car, on a straightaway, you're caught. This was according to the CG artists at the time. The larger 400-foot Japanese version is also faster than a car. Just like an ant can run with all its might, you can take one step and be ahead of it.
On a side note, the Hulk can run 700 MPH, but it's never brought up much.

    Timm...
An important thing to know about this movie is, at the time it came out, Godzilla had been a largely dormant franchise for the past few years. Toho had been planning to let the Americans have their fun with Godzilla, while they planned for the original to make his comeback in 2004, for his fiftieth anniversary.
When this movie came out, it certainly made more than enough money ro justify sequels, but the shellacking it took from critics and ESPECIALLY Godzilla fans torpedoed that, as did Toho deciding to revise their plans and rush a new Godzilla movie into production.

I mean, sure, they changed a LOT from what Godzilla is really like, and I can see why some people wold consider it an insult to the real Godzilla, but as a stand-alone movie, like if they simply didn't say this was Godzilla, I thought it was pretty good. And yeah, looking at the CGI today, it's off, but for it's time, the effects were great.

  • @wesmcinerny4524

The first Godzilla movie made outside of Japan.
For most classic fans of Japanese Godzilla, this was a disappointment. For one thing, this version does not breathe atomic fire, and is also smaller and weaker than the original Godzilla. The other big problem is that there was no rival giant monster to fight.
There is, however, an animated TV show that continues the story of the 1998 film, which is arguably better than the movie because, for one thing, it has more monsters.
However, I'm not going to jump on the bandwagon to hate the 1998 movie. It's decent in its own right. The problem is that it bore the title Godzilla, and the monster itself is nothing like Godzilla. Instead, this might as well have been a remake of The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms.
In fact, since it's a totally different monster from Godzilla, Toho renamed this American Godzilla to Zilla.

Ohhhh I remember this! I’s like a guilty pleasure, I don’t know why was so poorly rated, the cinema I went was packed and it was hard to get tickets. It also has a great soundtrack, the main theme (with Puff Daddy 🤣) was everywhere!

    Hey Tim,
I like this Godzilla film better than the other Japanese Godzilla films. Everyone has their own taste. Be sure to watch "The day after Tomorrow (2004) and 2012 (2009), also by Roland Emmerich

A decent monster movie, terrible Godzilla adaptation. Watch the animated series it's way better. 44:04 here's the answer to your question it was the design and how the character been portrayed. He runs away from the military, he doesn't shoot his atomic breath, he gets killed by the regular missiles instead of a super weapon, it's a huge Jurassic Park rip off. And what's worse of all Roman Emerich hated Godzilla

This version of Godzilla gets a lot of flack, but I like this one more than the current version. Why? More scientifically possible. The probability of a giant lizard forming after years of radiation exposure is beyond what can possibly be brought into actual numbers, but in my view, it's still more likely than the Hollow Earth theory the current version uses for origins. This one goes by instinct like all animals in the natural world. Godzilla here isn't being malicious. It's natural. Last time I saw this movie from beginning to end was actually during a RiffTrax Live event broadcast into a movie theater. RiffTrax is done by some of the guys that used to be on Mystery Science Theater 3000. They have a website you can check out.

@bienG6745 1998 Godzilla is, I'm guessing, designed to be more like a Galapágos iguana. An aquatic lizard that also lives on land. The more current Godzilla films mixed with King Kong never really piqued my interest. Couldn't get into the story.

I think with time, opinions have softened a little about this movie. I think there being some really good Godzilla movies to come after this has helped. Really, I think it comes down to this being a fine monster movie, but it's not a good Godzilla movie. The monster design is fine too, but it's not Godzilla. A major part of the failing is that it has the Godzilla name on it.

This movie got way too much hate. As far as a Godzilla movie yeah it’s not the real Godzilla but if you ignore that it’s actually an epic monster movie. The Godzilla design and Audrey are the only complaints people have of this movie

PLEASE REACT TO "SPIRIT: STALLION OF THE CIMARRON"! It's a story about a strong, beautiful horse with a spirit that can never be broken.
I cry every time i watch it! It's a INCREDIBLE film, and the songs are so cool! But it's not a musical and the animals can't talk. 😭💔🔥

Nah, the CG was pretty dated for when it came out also sadly lol. The movie gets alot of hate, but its still kinda of campy fun. To be fair, the night shots of Godzilla are a bit better as most kaiju movies always look better at night.

Iguanazilla is entertaining enough, but it will never be the real King Of The Monsters. I also really love Matthew Broderick and Hank Azaria. They've both got iconic characters under their belts.
Matthew Broderick: Inspector Gadget, Simba (adult), Ferris Bueller
Hank Azaria: Moe & Apu from The Simpsons & Gargamel from the live action Smurfs movies

This version of Godzilla movie was so hated by not only fans (personally it is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me) but also Toho that one they refer to the monster as Zilla & 2nd they placed it in the movie “Godzilla Final Wars” for only a few seconds so that way for Godzilla to just straight up kill it, but here is something ironic that this got an animated series afterwards which is actually good where several characters of the movie continue their adventures with a new Godzilla
