This idea for Victory also makes sense as to why it was only found on the West Coast other than at Nuka-World, as the East Coast is heavily more into Nuka-Cola than the West Coast, which is pretty decently Sunset Sarsparilla territory. So, I'd imagine that a limited-edition release flavor may have sold off their stock far quicker in the East than the West, meaning DC drank their stock before the bombs dropped while Vegas had some still lying around ready to be sold. This has historical precedent, given Pepsi's release of Crystal Pepsi a few years back - when outside of metro areas, despite a lower supply being sent out, the east coast sold their supply out almost 10 months faster than the midwest and west coast (once again, outside metro areas). Not a perfect one to one proof, but it gives the idea some basis

A note about the Sunset Sarsaparilla study and side-effects - Festus does note that these side-effects would only appear if someone would drink an ungodly amount of it in an extremely short amount of time. I took this to mean that after Nuka-Cola tried and failed to buy them out, they tried smeering them by ordering a study on the drink for possible side-effects and the results showed that unless you guzzled something like an entire vat of the stuff in under a minute, there isn't any serious problems with drinking it, but they still went "Aha! See? There *are* possible side effects!" even if it was extremely circumstantial, and thus caught Sunset Sarsaparilla on a technicality, even if it wasn't the gotcha that Nuka-Cola was hoping for. So they were able to force Sunset Sarsaparilla to disclose the fact that there are side-effects to drinking it, on a technicality, even if the circumstances are ludicrous. It would be like ordering a study on bottled water and keeping the study on going until they found *something* that it finally took them drinking 22 Litres of water under 5 minutes to finally say that there can be health problems, at which point a normal person would say "No sh!t Sherlock - you just drank 22 Litres of water under 5 minutes. Of course that would be unhealthy!" but a corporation like Nuka-Cola would bank on it since that was literally all the dirt they could manage to dig up and proceed to use it as a technicality to say 'drinking bottled water can cause health issues' even if the circumstances were extreme.

it also mirrors the real life issue with why sarsaparilla fell out of flavor, and why all modern "sarsaparillas" are imitation: sassafras is illegal. The plant grows in abundance in the Americas, and it was desired by European settlers and Native Americans for its health benefits and flavor. Sassafras is one of many components in making the drug that the "spirit vision" trope was derived from. The never-ending desire to squash native American cultures, and eliminate effective frontier medicines in favor of cocaine, led to the criminalization of using sassafras because its "carcinogenic." At some point a study is conducted that concludes basically everything can give you cancer in certain quantities, and the findings for Sassafras are extremely underwhelming, especially when you compare its potential health benefits.*
Sassafras is probably the inspiration for Broc flowers, as Sassafras leaves and flowers were used in poultices, a lot like the "healing powder" encountered in the game. The fact real-life sassafras medicine was often just: "shove the leaves in an open wound until you have time to clean it properly" is also why healing powder has such a low survival skill requirement.
Broc leavFlower isnt required to home brew sunset however, and instead xander root is used. The drink originally was made with Sassafrass root and Birch oil, but when Sassafrass became illegal, they dropped the Root. Xander root (as the other part of healing powder) may be a way of dividing Sassafras into Broc flower (which looks like Sassafras flowers) and Sassafras root.
*safrole, the oil that was carcinogenic, is also found in cinnamon, nutmeg, and a whole host of other foodstuffs, but those didn't have native American associations.

Here's a theory - the mixing stations probably removes most of the liquid from the drinks, combines them, then adds an appropriate amount of liquid back into the mixture. That's why combining 2+ drinks only ends up resulting in one bottles worth. This could be done without boiling it (i.e. vacuum dessication) so as not to degrade the other ingredients.

    • @The_Stumbler
      @The_Stumbler 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

Also, the combined drinks are radiation free, so it could be a matter of boiling the drinks to remove radiation and/or to allow mixing. There are two types of drinks, ice cold and normal, meaning we could be drinking hot cola.

That's how the things work in real life.
Maybe you just need the bottles to unlock the syrups? It would explain why they aren't radiated, perhaps.

Nuka-Free is likely a reference to Pepsi Free, which was the brand name that Pepsi sold it's Caffeine-Free variant of Pepsi in the early 80s, famously referenced in Back to the Future ("If you want a Pepsi kid you've gotta pay for it!").

"Nuka-Cola Quartz is a flavor of Nuka-Cola that enjoyed a limited release in the American Southwest. It has a classy look, thanks to the lack of added food colorings but a distinctive white tint and glow. It was developed under the code name "Angry Beaver," during development the beverageers added non-soluble sugar flakes to simulate a quartz-like appearance and to counteract the cavitation issues from previous attempts. The Nuka-Cola Corporation had a trademark battle with "Vim! Pop Incorporated" over the "Quartz" trademark as Vim was also selling a drink known as Vim Quartz, and Nuka-Cola was successful.
"the beverageers added non-soluble sugar flakes to simulate a quartz-like appearance" this is why it makes a crunchy sound when you drink it. it has solid sugar chunks in it.
as for taste, the drink was released after they basically stole the Quartz name from Vim and won the lawsuit over the rights to that name. and the Vim drink was bubble gum flavor. which means Nuka-Quartz probably tastes like Cola+Bubble Gum too.
just like how Nuka-Wild tastes like Sunset Sasparilla+Cola. to directly compete against the Sunset Sarsaparilla corporation after a failed buyout.
also for most company acquisitions, Nuka did not only rebrand the drinks. like in the case of Nuka Cherry. they took the recipe of the bought out company, and added regular Nuka-Cola to it. then sold it as "Nuka-xxxxx"

  • @Maddbox11235

The caffeine in Nuka-Cola might be what's needed for super stimpacks. First off, the anti-fatigue properties of caffeine might be desirable for a self-administered first aid syringe. In the absence of proper treatment by a trained medic, keeping the patient alert long enough to get to a medic is useful.
Caffeine has also been shown to improve the effects of painkillers like aspirin, acetaminophen, and naproxen, and can be found bundled with them in over-the-counter daytime flu medicine, hangover cures, and generic "Maximum Strength Pain Relief" pills.
Finally, caffeine can have a slightly beneficial effect on lung function. It's enough to throw off the results of a spirometry test, and there's been a few recorded instances of caffeine helping with minor asthma issues. I wouldn't recommend replacing a medicated inhaler with some caffeine pills, but if someone was having shortness of breath after breathing in a bunch of radioactive dust or tear gas on the battlefield, it might help a bit.

Ive always wondered how Nuka Cola wasn't sued by Coca Cola since the Fallout timeline splits from our own sometime in the 1950s and 1960s and Nuka Cola was created in 2044. Coca Cola was still very prominent during the 50s and 60s and became the very symbol of classic American soft drinks. So did the Coca Cola company not exist entirely in the Fallout universe or did the company not become so popular and famous as in our universe and was later overshadowed by Nuka Cola in the 2040s and either the company broke apart or was bought out by Nuka Cola before the Great War of 2077. Also in the intro cutscene of Fallout 4 you can see a bottle of Nuka Cola next to Nate's great great grandmother and great grandfather, and this specific scene was set during WW2 aka the 1940s. Nuka Cola was invented in the 2040s so how the heck did that Nuka Cola bottle travel back in time 100 years to be seen in that cutscene. I'm not sure if that was a simple mistake by Bethesda or some super complicated plot hole ( we already got enough Fallout plotholes from Fallout 76 ).

Aparthame has a much longer lasting sweetness than normal sugar on top of it being sweeter, it's actually so sickly sweet that manufacturers normally cut it with another sweetener called Acesulfame K, which has that extremely noticeable "artificial" aftertaste you can taste in the majority of diet sodas. They introduce this to make the sweetness linger shorter, so Nuka-Cola must be absolutely SICKENINGLY sweet.

I always thought that Coca-Cola did exist within the Fallout Universe, but during the famine and rationing caused by the Great War and events during the 2040s, Coca-Cola was not able to cope with shortages and keep themselves alive while continuing their standards. Unlike Coca-Cola, Nuka-Cola was entering into the world during these times, so they were quick to cope with the change and slip into the market as the Coca-Cola empire fell.

I actually have an idea for fallout 5 that fits this video. We have seen Sierra Petrovita go from a woman in a shack to the only living person who knows Nuka-cola's secrets in the wasteland. Plus, the sole survivor probably freed Nuka-world. I just have a feeling they will make the good ending cannon. What if she takes over and she is the leader of that faction. Nuka-world had a bottling plant, and she would just have to get it working to make more. She could end up the would supplier of Nuka-cola in the wasteland.
If they really want to go insane with it, the next time we see her, she could be a glowing quantum ghoul.

What if instead of her just being a supplier what if she had a full faction? The water merchants had a LOT of power in the original fallout, so she could be similar but with Nuka-cola.
Her guards could even have Nuka-weapons. I am not saying every guard would have a Quantum Gun and shoot blue nukes. But radiation weapons like the children of atom have would make sense. Just paint them red and scribble the word Nuka across the side.
Actually, now that I think about it, it seems odd that the children of atom aren't connected to the nucular soda. I would expect them to at least worship Quantum because it literally glows blue.

Traditional Sarsaparilla is made from smilax ornata (which is also just called sarsaparilla vine) or one of the related smilax plants globally. US, Mexico, Asia, it doesn't matter. More modern stuff uses birch oil as a substitute but thats a cost thing.
Which is really annoying because Birch Beer is also a thing, which uses birch oil, bark, and root. Most places and people dont really separate birch beer from sarsaparilla anymore with flavorings.
Root Beer is sort of in the same situation as Sarsaparilla too. Traditional Root Beer is made using Sassafras Tree bark, but sassafras bark contains safrole which is a carcinogen and it's been dropped since the 60's. (but since Fallout is based on the future as imagined from the 50's, that wouldn't be an issue). You can process the sassafras to remove the safrole and make it safe but it tends to not be worth the effort and most companies use other flavors to replace it like cherry bark, caramel, wintergreen, licorice, vanilla and a ton of others.

That would make a lot of sense with the Sunset Sarsaparilla health concerns that it was actually flavored with safrole.
Also Nukashine, Nuka-Cola Dark and all over alcohol containing beverages are not actually soft drinks since the term “soft” is referring to its alcohol content, or lack there of in this case.

Hi. Medical field here. If it's very sugary, you could hypothetically reduce nuka cola over a heat source down into a more syrupy consistency, and could use that almost as a salve or glue to hold wounds shut. I personally can't see injecting it as anything but a bad idea. Perhaps they could use the carbonization to boost the injection rate, but.. that would probably be a bad plan, and mostly all of the nuka cola is described as being warm and flat.
