  • The Ted Coningsby Squadron visit the QRA station of the north, RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland, wahhhayyyy! Our home station, RAF Coningsby is the QRA station of the south, protecting the skies of the southern airspace. The key role for 'Lossie' is to protect the northern airspace.
RAF Lossiemouth or 'Team Lossie' is made up of four Typhoon combat aircraft squadrons, one Poseidon MRA1 squadron, and an RAF Regiment squadron. Typhoon squadrons are 1(F), 2(AC), 6 and 9(B). The P8 Poseidon squadrons are CXX and 201.
We have a special action packed debut visit, from a disastrous fuel leak from a Typhoon (I use fuel leak which doesn't do it justice, just watch the footage, it is shockingly scary), two F35B's from RAF Marham arrive to see Sqn Ldr T Coningsby, which had to avoid a birdstrike. One of the F35s skilfully avoided the worse by dodging the birds. We were also given a treat to watch three Typhoons from the Covesea Lighthouse!
We also have some special bonus footage at the end from our journey home. We stopped very briefly at RAF Kirknewton and Retford (Gamston) Airport! Enjoy
There is so much history connected to Lossie. The station opened in May 1939, with the first flying unit being 15 Flying Training Squadron. The first Station Commander was Group Captain P E Maitland MVO AFC RAF.
Following the outbreak of World War Two and the increase in tempo, 20 Operational Training Unit became the major unit on base, utilising satellite airfields at Bogs O’Mayne, Milltown and Brackla.
RAF Lossiemouth became a staging location for Anti-Shipping missions, including the famous raid against the German u-boat Tirpitz, involving IX (Bomber) and 617 Squadrons.
In 1946 the Fleet Air Arm took over Lossiemouth and Milltown (HMS Fulmar, or Royal Naval Air Station Lossiemouth). It was during this time that the Station was commanded by Captain Eric "Winkle" Brown, a man who still holds many aviation world records to this day.
With the Defence Review of 1966 the Navy lost its aircraft carriers and in 1972 handed back the Station to the RAF.
Since the early 1970s the RAF used the Buccaneer, Shackleton, Jaguar and Tornado aircraft, both in training roles and operationally at Lossiemouth.
The Station has been involved in many modern conflicts, including both Gulf conflicts and Afghanistan. In addition, the RAF Regiment is deployed regularly from Lossiemouth.
Between June 2011 and March 2014 14 Squadron, 12 (Bomber) Squadron and 617 Squadron ‘The Dambusters’ were disbanded. The Tornado era ended at RAF Lossiemouth in March 2017 when XV (Reserve) Squadron disbanded.
In 2013/14, 1 (Fighter) Squadron and 6 Squadron relocated to Moray from RAF Leuchars as the Station prepared to become a Typhoon main operating base.
II (Army Co-operation) Squadron ‘stood-up’ and relocated to RAF Lossiemouth in January 2015. D Flight, 202 Squadron, Search And Rescue disbanded in April 2015. The Strategic Defence and Security Review 2015 announced the future basing of P-8A Poseidon Maritime Patrol Aircraft at RAF Lossiemouth.
From September 2014 RAF Lossiemouth’s primary role has been the provision of Quick Reaction Alert (Interceptor) North. QRA maintains aircraft and crews on high alert in order to scramble and intercept unidentified aircraft approaching UK airspace. This is a duty that has been maintained by the RAF on a 24/7 basis for decades.
In 2019, IX (Bomber) Squadron was re-roled from flying Tornado at RAF Marham, to Typhoon at RAF Lossiemouth. This meant RAF Lossiemouth was home to four front-line Typhoon Squadrons.
With the formation of CXX Squadron at RAF Lossiemouth, the Station took delivery of two of its nine P-8A Poseidon Maritime Patrol Aircraft. The Pride of Moray (ZP801) and the City of Elgin (ZP802) touched down at Kinloss Barracks in February and March of 2020 respectively. ZP802 made its debut at RAF Lossiemouth in October 2020, closely followed by ZP801 and ZP803.

IF YOU ARE VISITING RAF LOSSIEMOUTH:
Here at the TCS, we make sure we give any safety advice wherever we can. If you are spotting for the day at Runway 23 and it is in use, please don’t stay directly at the Red and white fence. If you are near the red and white fence, please secure all items, such as floor mats, anything light, clothing, food or even ☂️ when visiting in the rain BECAUSE this may blow over the fence when aircraft are landing! An emmense amount of force/wind is generated but also when a P8 is taking off, this can also be an issue too. Should ANYTHING go over the fence, PLEASE contact the base immediately, so that they can remove it. This is called an FOD (Foreign Object Debris) and are hazards to aircraft, potentially putting lives at risk.
    Thank you

Lossie was my last tour of my 19 year RAF career. Glad some sense was finally shown with the purchase of proven US technomgy and the purchase of the Poseiden after the decades long farce of the Nimrod replacment..in both the maritime and AEW roles! The Typhoons had not got there when I left in 2006 and it would have been great to work on them!

Great post Ted 👍 Need to get yourself a safety pin for your beret 😂 Good job you weren't there back in the days when Jaguars and Tornadoes were lined three or for abreast holding with their after burners which was an amazing experience. 23 is by far the best location with all the close-up advantage and viewing spots and so many and would have to say Lossie is situated at one of the most scenic and picturesque areas for an RAF airbase. Seeing your filming locations brings back so many memories when I use to go a lot especially during the the eighties and into the nighties when the Jaguar 226 OCU Squadron was based there and had a huge amount of Jaguars along with two Squadrons of Buccaneers 12 and 208 Squadrons plus the 237 OCU and also 8 Squadron Shackletons the good old days. North East Scotland use to be called Jaguar and Buccaneer and later Tornado country and seeing them doing what they do best as in fly very low fast and ground hugging that's very much missed and wont be seen again with the current aircraft and with all the safety regulations. Many thanks for visiting Lossie and the North East and glad the weather was kind to you to you both. The lighthouse is a landmark especially seeing the jets banking around it. Once again great post 👍

      @TedConingsby  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Oiiii oiiiii Richard 🤙🏼 Thank you so much for your comments. Lossiemouth was an amazing experience and for us, it felt rather mesmerising to see Typhoons not at Coningsby. As you may know Coningsby is my home and seeing them there is natural, so to see them elsewhere is rather overwhelming.
We are so glad we brought back memories for you too. Wow, sounds like my beret wouldn’t have stood a chance
We have planned in our next visit to Lossie in august this year so we cannot wait to go. And it will be fun to live stream there too. Hope to see you on the chats or comments for the stream.

@@TedConingsby Hi and your very welcome and yes loads of great memories. Glad you enjoyed your time at Lossie especially when you get the weather its like a micro climate especially for the North East 😂 You were in the right place to catch the Typhoon having fuel issues and impressive to see but didn't realise they dumped fuel at the top of their fin... Ever find out what the cause was? I bet it would have been strange seeing Typhoons out with Coningsby. For a base to have 4 Squadrons, Northern QRA, 9 P8 Poseidons and soon Wedgetails and will be one of if not the biggest base in the UK but surprisingly it can be very quiet with everything going on around the world and can be a hit or a miss. There's a site called fightercontrol and you can check out bases and folks comments I.e. activities, types, registrations etc from locals, onbase sources and like you photographers and can be pretty quiet for a large base. Its always good when you have an OCU at your base and as you have shown at Coningsby its pretty much all go. Lossie had a massive Jaguar OCU plus the buccaneer OCU and later the Tornado OCU and for a long time always guaranteed action plus foreign visitors paying visits but how times have changed even the biannual Joint Warrior exercises have changed with mostly maritime aircraft based at lossie and not foreign fighters during the exercise period. Hope you get good weather and loads of action when you and Ted visit in August.
Was watching your Halloween night special from Cons and Holbeach and the Chinooks firing their M60's and their cannon out of their tail was very impressive at night seeing their tracers hit the deck and ricochet into the sky and how you captured it was pretty awesome 👍
Was watching your feed today and I fully understand packing it in with the weather and I bet also missing your buddy but at least he was dry and living it up and enjoying with The Top Hatters crew and personnel tonight 😂and hope Ted enjoys his flight tomorrow and your able to get good footage and the weathers a lot better for you.

Yes, really enjoyed our debut at Lossie and we had an excellent time. The weather was also kind too. Was a strange feeling seeing the Typhoons somewhere else in a different location.
So the Typhoon vents fuel on the top of the tail and will usually vent fuel on negative G’s (you’ll see this on displays especially) and on start ups. We don’t know exactly what happened but it could have been a valve issue or in balance of fuel or something else.
Glad you liked the Halloween video, it was something a little different with a little ghost 👻 story at the end, well it’s more haunting than anything but fun. Ironically this is where I charge my luck lol
