  • Everyone has been asking what's been done to the Turbo Pinto so I figured it was time for a quick explanation. I'm planning on going into more detail on the suspension and engine setup soon for anyone who is interested in the specifics, also feel free to reach out if you have Pinto or Ford Lima 2.3 questions. If I don't have the answer I can probably tell you who does. Planning on hitting some drift events soon with this car, and getting into time trials later on.

    That’s the trick to having a safe Pinto, make it so fast that no one can rear end it.

      They fixed the safety issues years before mine was built, but I probably made it less safe because now it's more likely to hit a tree backwards than forwards...

      I got the idea from SuperfastMatt but the fuse block he used was out of stock at the time, he has a really good guide on rewiring cars: th-cam.com/video/pSXv8RHa22I/w-d-xo.html
      I ended up using a Littelfuse HWB60, which uses GM metripack 280 terminals in a universal case: www.littelfuse.com/products/dc-power-distribution-modules/hard-wired-pdm/hwb60.aspx
      Saved me a ton of space over the previous setup, it's super cheap and completely customizable.

    I had an 87 tbird turbo coupe. Bought it in 1999 for 180 bucks from a rich kid getting ready to tow it to a junker. Glad I stopped to offer the boost he needed.
    He told me his dad had bought him a new Lexus for graduating law school.
    After.i paid for it he told me the turbo had quit a year or two earlier. It was gutless and barely running. I limped it over to my brothers place . He is a mechanic. He popped the hood and held up a loose vacume tube . Plugged it into the intercooler if memory serves. Said give it a try.
    The old bird wound out like crazy. All my freinds with thier fart-can equipped integras laughed until they tried to drag race me. I even beat a 68 el Camino once.
    Such a fun car . So glad that kid did well in law school.. 😉 😜

      It is overwhelming. It took me like 3 years to put it together in the first place and then I've slowly redone everything again as I learned from mistakes I made. It's a great way to learn a LOT - just budget for a lot more time and money than you would expect at first. And don't half-ass things cause they'll come back to bite you.
      I spent about as much money on the car as the one year I went to college, and learned way more from building the car.

    • @SauceGarage
      @SauceGarage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stinger Performance sells the PiMP (plug-in MicroSquirt) ECU and the TFI to cam sensor conversion kit. I DIYd everything both because I'm broke and extremely picky about wiring, but ended up buying the trigger wheel from them because the guy who made the kit pointed out in a FB group that the trigger wheel I designed was too heavy and was going to damage the distributor shaft. There's also the other route of adapting a crank trigger wheel and mounting a sensor there. Whichever route you go, reliability and serviceability will massively increase. Ron Francis sells nice wiring harnesses for the 2.3T if yours is falling apart.
      I had a few 90s Rangers and don't care to ever own one again personally, but I've been in a turbo swapped Ranger before and it was a bunch of fun.

    • @SauceGarage
      @SauceGarage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Availability. I'm in the northeast, it's very hard to find Pinto parts in junkyards as most of them got crushed decades ago. Would've saved a lot of weight going with an 8" but I couldn't get my hands on one. Meanwhile every junkyard has a ton of 8.8s.

    • @johnmcmullen456
      @johnmcmullen456 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SauceGarage Very true about the boneyards. When so few of an older model are still on the road, the less demand for used parts, and the crushing begins. Swap meets mostly have popular parts, but fortunately we have sources like Ebay to secure hard to find items, although won't be cheap. As you have shown, adapting more modern parts to an older car can be rewarding and more cost effective, too. Something done for many decades, basically hot rodding.

    • @SauceGarage
      @SauceGarage  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you don't wanna go through the hassle of DIY and want a plug and play ECU - it is. It's a re-packaged MegaSquirt ECU that plugs into the stock harness with a base tune loaded on it and you get some extra support with your purchase. I wanted to rewire my car from scratch anyways as I had a hacked up Merkur harness and I'm OCD so I wanted to wire it myself and went with a generic MS2 DIY kit. I basically ripped off their distributor to cam sensor conversion with a heat resistant phenolic cap instead of the billet aluminum they used, and a different sensor. Ended up buying a trigger wheel from them because one of the guys saw a post I made on a MegaSquirt page and pointed out my trigger wheel design was too heavy and would end up breaking the distributor. Felt a little embarrassed that they basically saw me stealing their design but I was doing a one-off for my own car when I was broke and also used it as a learning opportunity - I definitely will not be making copies for sale haha.
      EDIS ain't a bad idea either. I ended up using a VW waste-spark coil pack from a 2.0 Golf. I initially put my MS2 in with the stock TFI ignition system and distributor, and it shat out on my first run at my first track day with it.
      Whether you go PiMP or a DIY harness for a generic MegaSquirt tuning the car is the same - so make sure you have a dyno tuner who's familiar with TunerStudio.

      The Explorer rear axle was already 5 lug with 11" disc brakes. The front is a generic Mustang II big brake kit. Speedway Motors and most other hot rod shops sell them. It used Granada 11" rotors which use the same wheel bearings, fabricated brackets that are sold in the kit or separate, and GM G-Body Metric calipers. There's half a dozen companies that sell it as a bolt on kit, and then you can get replacement pads and rotors from any auto parts store later on.

Also moved the turbo forwards with a custom log header because the stock Ford turbo manifold puts it too close to the firewall.

      It's at least got an identical block, crank, and rods to what came in the car stock and the suspension mounting points haven't been altered...so I guess it technically still is? 95% of the mechanical parts are from other cars or speed shops though

      Nothing I did to mine applies to a 72 as everything about the chassis is slightly different on the 74-80 cars. None of the suspension, brakes, motor mounts, etc interchange with the 71-73 cars and I have no experience with the early ones. I suggest joining the Pinto Car Club of America either on Facebook or on their forum at FordPinto.com

All converted to 5 lug with 11" disks on the front and a (now) posi 8" rear out of a V-6 Pinto. Also has a T-5 from Ford Racing and 3.50 rear gears. Has a PIMP computer. • @SauceGarage
      @SauceGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Only the cam pulley is exposed now, but I ran it without a timing cover for years and never had an issue. It's non-interference so it wouldn't be the end of the world. I tried to cut a circle out of the top of the cover so I could get to the pulley bolts while leaving the belt covered but the plastic cracked

Would be afraid to leave the belt exposed on an interference motor for sure though - that could be a death sentence on a Honda or VW. Worst case for me is I need a tow home and to re-time the motor...whereas for them that could mean bent valves and holes in the pistons

      Nope, this had a stock 2.3 when I pulled it out of a junkyard just over a decade ago. Also doubt I'm making enough power to run 10s. It's set up for cornering, not drag

      @@stephenkowalski2448 Was the Mustang II really that heavy? This car is basically the same underneath and was 2400 stock. I remember how slow my stock 2.3 was. Apparently it was even slower than it should've been because my buddy who ended up with it discovered the cam was badly worn. Probably because I put 35k miles on it without adding zinc to the oil, I didn't know better back then...

    • @stephenkowalski2448
      @stephenkowalski2448 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SauceGarage it was slow, but I had high miles at like 160k+ and an auto. I blew it up, it broke piston rings. I wanted to experiment and use the car in the winter. I rebuilt the motor 0.030 over and changed the auto for a original 4 speed SR4. It went much better. But not a fast car. It would burn out as the transmission was first 3 gears super low (1st was like 4.2 to 1) then 4th was normal 1:1, the intent was to run a tall rear gear so a half a$s like overdrive equivalent. I believe car weighed 3100 pounds. I ran the auto rear 3.18,. You were supposed to run a 2.79. At least the low geared manual could get the car going off the line. I was about to pull my friends 74 nova that had a 350 in the lower gears .... Ok so maybe not super slow after a few mild mods. I always thought a 2.3l turbo in a mustang II would be fun

    someone has to swap a ford ecoboost turbo i4 from a ford explorer into a mustang ii or pinto stat

    • @SauceGarage
      @SauceGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      The Ecoboost is a problem for swaps because Ford stopped selling the swap harness/ECU kit and it's a huge challenge to control a direct injection motor with an aftermarket ECU. The way to go is the n/a Duratec 2.5 out of the Fusion with a turbo slapped on it. Same engine family but uses more traditional injectors and is larger displacement, plus it bolts straight to a Miata trans. Chip Renai Givens on the TurboFord FB page is building one. I seem to recall they were past 380hp on the dyno with a turbo slapped on an untouched junkyard motor...

      Ignition switch still works just as well as when I got the car 11 years ago. Same with the Corolla I've daily driven for 8 years and the El Camino I've had for 6. If i'm at the track I just run a bare key though. Had my old Volvo shut off mid-drift because of a combo of the full keychain and the angle that ignition switch was mounted at though. Happened twice before I figured out what was going on hahaha
