Gas Spews Out When I Try To Fill It Up - Broken Vent Control Valve on a 2004/2005/2006 Nissan Sentra

  • This is how to fix a broken vent control valve / vapor canister valve on a 2004 / 2005 / 2006 Nissan Sentra. I have heard this process may be very similar (if not identical) for other years of Nissan Sentra's as well. The symptoms are they that when you try to fill you car at the gas station the pump will continually shut off barely letting you get more than quarter of a gallon at a time. Gas may also spew back out of the gas cap. Also, you will most likely hearly a whooshing of air as you open the gas cap. This part can be found for around $55. I have heard mechanic shops quote around $350 to repair this.

    It took all of 10 minutes . The hardest pare was making sure I did not break the plastic clip this repair is so easy. I would not consider my self a car guy. My shop wanted 200 to fix this. Any one with a pair of jack stands can do this. Very easy . Thanks again for this video it helped a lot

    Thanks! On my 2014 Frontier, there was no plastic cover - it was behind the frame bar. Pretty easy once I watched your video. Appreciate it!

    Thanks for this. I have a 2005 SE-R Sentra and while I am not getting the splash back often (it shuts off only once or so a fill up) it is an issue... so mine might be cleanable since it seems to work sometimes (or maybe it is stuck open). Will have to check it out.

      Fixed mine today! Thanks again for this video!
      Oh also anyone who is reading this, clean out the spot the valve turns/plugs into as mine was really cruddy inside and probably a big part of the issue.

    I just got a quote from Nissan for this exact repair: $162 for the part and $120 to install, plus taxes.
    Went to a parts supplier and got the part itself for $76 inc. taxes.
    Thanks for much for posting this!

    U nailed the repair man! An added piece of info tho, the vent valve doesn’t test pressure. It’s simply an open or closed valve

    Or go to the junkyard and take one off the same year or newer model vehicle. I have a 06 Tahoe and had the same problem but after watching these videos I went straight to junk yard but there was no 06 tahoe but there were a lot of GMC Envoy & pickup trucks. So I didn't want the same problem to happen anytime soon so I to the evap off a 09 envoy with low mile the part was $4.00 with a lifetime warranty.

    Awesome. One thing I did not mention in the video is that if your check engine light is on as a result of this part going bad, it should eventually go off after a couple of days. You should not need to clear the code with a computer.

    I don't have gas spewing issue but I am getting P0455 for over 4 years now. Got it checked so many times, everytime was told gas cap issue. Replaced with an OEM cap, nothing changed. The mechanic then changed Oxygen sensor, the same thing. Now I know this could be an issue.
    Just wondering, taking off the wheel is a must, or can do without removing the wheel as well? 2006 Sentra 1.8L

    HALLELUJAH!!! --thank goodness I know what's wrong now!!! Stupid check engine light on 4 two flippin years,...mechanics telling me nothing is wrong ...
    This gas tank situation has been driving me crazy for 2 years!! {and the person I got the 2006 Sentra from said I was just overreacting and to just put gas in slower! *slower than 10 min to fill 1/2 a tank I said to him??*
    Now,... to find someone to do it for me *haha* I'm liable to make it worse as I can't even change a tire {{I know I know...typical woman}} - but honestly, this has made me want to learn more about cars -- it was really interesting --Thanks so much, this has really helped --- Anyone know where to get this part in Canada?

    • @GameLoot
      @GameLoot 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same on my 05 Sentra SE-R. Started spitting back at me when filling all of a sudden and then the check engine light came on soon after... then a week later you could not even put gas in it (well you can, if you have an hour like you say). Put the new one in (got it for only like $35 on Amazon and "claims" a 2-year warranty) and she fills up like new again! Light is still on but only drove it home so will take a bit for it to refresh and turn off (and if not i can clear it).

      Did your Engine light turn off after wards?

    • @GameLoot
      @GameLoot 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@angellopez779 - If you are asking me I had to have the code cleared as I think it is not an active code (as in once it triggers it will not check itself to see if is now okay... some codes are like that and need to be cleared as they only work one way).

    I've seen these names (and others) used interchangeably. In the video I am connecting the Vent Control Valve directly to the Evaporator Canister. I would imagine the replacement process and parts is pretty close, if not the same.

    Could this cause a stalling feeling to the car while in low revs? I'd been suspecting the fuel pump, because it seemed to work better with a full tank, but now I'm having these fueling issues, I'm second guessing.
    juddering in low RPM's, and a sometimes inability to accelerate. No error codes. Kind of comes and goes.

      Rob Lawrence IF you havent already checked the Idle Air Control Valve. Actually your particular sounds like what I was having in my car. Easy fix especially with help of other TH-camrs videos. On mine, it was located on the top, back, towards central/middle are toward back of engine, just under the hood. Also check Throttle body. When replacing the IACV get a new Idle Air Control gasket as the last one it is bound to be hard pressed. Before you replace it, get a high quality intake cleaner or MAP cleaner. If you buy something not the MAP cleaner, ensure you dont spray the MAP sensor its sensitive and its a whole other thing. These and more videos +on YT Avaliable to your device.

    Will this help clear a p1273 code? The o2 sensor was already replaced, a muffler was replaced and gas spews when I try to pump. So I'm wondering if they're related issues.

    hi there, so i have had the same problem with my car, its a 2000 mustang, but the machanic who looked at it, before replacing that part unhooked the hose to let it vent and bipass it, but it still spewed out the top of the car, canadian tire is telling me its my filler neck but the other garage is saying the filler neck is fine. help, im so frustrated!! :( canadian tire put on a whole new gas tank few months ago and when i got the gas to stop pouring out the bottom it wouldn't go in the top. any suggestions i can't afford to keep getting wrong opinions, spent 1700 on this so far.

    The check engine light has been on due to an error code P0455 for my 2006 Nissan Sentra 1.8S, tried to change a new fuel cap and cycled the battery. It was off for 50 miles, then came back on again. Tried to disconnect and reconnect my battery again, it came back again about 50-60 miles.
    AutoZone told me it could be vapor canister check valve problem, i am going to remove it and check it this weekend. How can you tell if it has any problems on it? Is it located on rear right side?
