      You can easily look this up online for that model helicopter, but it ain't cheap. Plus every 12 years you have to pay a hundred grand for a refurb so that alone factors into $12,000 per year not including any maintenance whatsoever

    As a fixed wing pilot many years ago and knowing a bit about helicopters, I really appreciated the frankness of your video. You make flying look so easy (especially in the congested LA airspace) but the video shows non-pilots that there is a whole lot of planning, judgement, contingency preparation, and specific knowledge involved. I completely understand how you can like functioning at that high level, but you made it clear that you have to WANT to do it and do it WELL! And Evie's knowledge is likely growing with every flight-she seems so confident! Pretty soon that yellow cap on the cyclic needs to be replaced! Happy and Safe Holidays and New Year's to all three of youi!

    Watching the flight over Ventura County was very cool. We're headquartered in Santa Paula, which is about a 20-30 minute drive east of Camarillo/Ventura. When you're on the ground and in that traffic, it feels so busy and congested. Feels quite different looking down from the air.

    I think I'd enjoy flying by helicopter except that I have Meniere's Disease, and I think the constant noise and being forced to wear headphones would be very very fatiguing. And I don't even want to think about having to *pilot* a helicopter for that long! I'm quite happy to watch your happy family travel though.

    This was an awesome video and the first one that made me really connect with your helicopter content. I have always loved your car content but this video made me a lot more interested in helicopters. Some more videos about the logistics of planning a helicopter trip, perhaps comparing it to driving or a short haul flight, as well as some stuff about the cost/difficulty of learning and getting licensed (if you haven’t already made that) would be really cool! If you wanted to go big with a video like this, I would *love* to see something a bit TG (I guess it’s Grand Tour now) style where you race a car to a destination that you might conceivably take either to, perhaps that’s Tahoe or Vegas or San Fran or some such place.

    Micah, making me want to buy a helicopter if ever a major lottery winning comes my way! Lol but in all honesty, great video and great list of the pros and cons of travelling by helicopter. Someone else already said it but I fully agree, would be interesting to see a full vlog start to finish of planning and taking a flight trip. My questions: 1, what’s the furthest you’ve flown the helicopter (not including when you brought it to Cali), and 2, is there a “dream helicopter trip” you’ve or the fam have always wanted to do?

    • @MicahMuzio
      @MicahMuzio  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1: Our farthest trip has been from San Bernardino to Napa.
      2: A dream trip would be to fly to Alaska…but I doubt I could carve out enough time in my schedule. That’s a LONG flight. 😁

    GREAT Flight over my Teenage Home town, Ventura !! Left in 1981.. At 5:47, that is Ventura Pier and above it is Holiday Inn and their parking garage. Used to be a guy and his wife came to H.I in his helo and landed on the top of the garage. They'd have Brunch at H.I. Drove the cops nuts. But no law against it . So the city council finally passed an ordinance that you CANNOT land a helicopter on the parking garage roof !! True story. Thanks for a Great memory ! Edit: At 7:38, for those that have never been here, That is Highway One (the Coast Route). On the left is the Original Two Lane, then the U.P. railroad tracks, then the 'New' 6 lane road built in the 70's. About 300 ft higher than the beach along here ! Go See California !!

    Great shots of the coast. The R44 provides such a great view. Are you using a RAM mount for the camera on the seat back bar? It looks like the medium arm. I use the long arm and it vibrates like a metronome on high! I just ordered a medium arm to try. I can't really see much with the short arm. I use a GoPro Hero 8 Black and with Hypersmooth on I only occasionally notice the vibration. At 10:05 in this video th-cam.com/video/qlI7aUmJ_ew/w-d-xo.html you can see me and my instructor vibrate as I start the turn in a 180 auto. I'm sure it's due to the camera shaking left-to-right. This R44 does shake a bit, but it's not bad below 90 knots. The blades have been checked and they're within allowable margins ... barely.

    Micah - Just saw this hit piece on your model helicopter. I say that because they were de facto blaming the teeter ability of the semi rigid rotor system on the R44 before they knew anything about what actually happened in this video: th-cam.com/video/Nw5Cmjul4dw/w-d-xo.html
    This kind of reporting loosely based on the data from other crashes is what has turned many a pilot off from Robinsons. I have flown in at least 2 of these R44 models and had a great experience like you have already had time in and time out both alone and with your family. I am hoping that at some point you or other Robby pilot friends of yours can help set the record straight.

    • @MicahMuzio
      @MicahMuzio  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for sharing the link. On one hand, I can see how folks who lack a detailed understanding of the R44 might think it's dangerous. On the other hand, it drives me crazy reading the comments on that video from keyboard crash investigators. Of course what really matters is that it is a massive tragedy whenever someone dies in an aviation related accident.
      For me the bottom line is that there are known scenarios where mast bumping or chopping of the boom can occur in the R44. Low rotor rpm, aggressive control inputs, low G flight, major turbulence. Consequently I fly conservatively to leave a good margin of safety. Though I have my suspicions, I don't know exactly what happened during the crash in Texas. Instead I'll wait for the accident investigation. And when it's released, I'll do my best to honor those who died by learning everything I can from their tragedy.

      @@MicahMuzio No problem. I suspect a low G situation like you describe leading to the mast bumping followed by tail boom strike. I found another video here that gives other points in a fair manner that you might enjoy or maybe learn from as a Robby pilot: th-cam.com/video/weGnUmRrNKM/w-d-xo.html
      I just saw another low G situation unfold in another video, but from inside the aircraft... makes sense this is what happened in that crash.

    Do you own this helicopter?

    I don’t see the appeal or desire to own and operate a helicopter that cost 3-4 times the hourly cost of a fixed wing when 99% of the time you’re landing at airports…🤷🏻‍♂️

      Fixed wing is certainly the more practical choice. What did say is that the off-airport landings, though less frequent, are amazing. Also, the altitudes and places helicopters can operate makes for a uniquely thrilling kind of travel.
      A good analogy is that cars are to airplanes as motorcycles are to helicopters. It’s more pragmatic to travel by car but riding a motorcycle is more thrilling.

      @@MicahMuzio I totally understand and get the comparison.
      Mine would be: I’m a sport bike guy and also very much a ADV rider. My analogy would be owning an off-road ADV bike and riding at 99% of the time on the road.
      I’m a fixed wing guy and own a bush plane. That being said I’ve taught myself how to fly RC Heli’s and would love to fly one for real. However I’d be guilty of blowing leaves and creating dust storms hovering places I probably shouldn’t.

      @@Captndarty As a fellow motorcyclist I appreciate the analogy. 👍
      I’m guessing your bush plane takes you most places a helicopter might land. If I wasn’t a rotary wing pilot, I’d definitely be drawn to some sort of STOL plane. Hmm. Maybe I should do a video about flying a bush plane. 🤔

    Uhh Sir, it is no longer airmen, we are in the political correct age and as of Jan/Feb it will be changing to air people or something. Cancel culture is about to strike!!! :) Keep on flying man, I love these videos. This hits home as I take my plane to Illinois, Indiana and Missouri from Florida several times a year! I have had to divert before and end up flying back home as I didn't even make it out of Florida due to severe Summer thunderstorms. More than once I have been in Illinois and could not fly out on the day planned because of thunderstorms all along my path, pilot time!

    flying a helicopter is costing you 500/hour

      To be clear, it is an objectively silly way to travel. It's stupid expensive.
