    Paradise Helicopters based in Kona has the original 500 from the magnum series and its based at Turtle Bay on Oahu. He also has 4 other 500's. 6 Bell 407's, a Bell 430 and a 429. They all operational. The owners are very cordial people with a great sense of family.

    • @beefyoso
      @beefyoso 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I saw that helicopter while I was there, I had no idea that was the actual one from the series. If I had I might have taken a flight.

    • @mandy8211
      @mandy8211 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@beefyoso I was incorrect. This current bird spent 18 years with Honolulu PD before Calvin got it. It was faithfully restored by Pheonix heliparts and spent time in Las Vegas Helicon with manetti and Mosley, the actors from the original magnum series. So, it came from Hawaii, sold to paradise helicopter, ferried across the pacific, restored in Arizona, displayed at Las Vegas Helicon, shown with actors manneti and Mosley and ferried back to Oahu where it flies tourists.

    For those that are curious, these Hughes 500's cost around $500K to $550+ used depending on frame hours. I found the listing for this exact helicopter and it has under 800 hours which is consider very low. Some additional information, a variant of this copter was used during the Vietnam War, the Hughes OH-6 Cayuse. I think the 500 is the civilian version but I am not entirely sure. For military use these were classified as light observation aircraft and for civilian use, light utility. The listing for this particular copter featured in this video - www.controller.com/listings/aircraft/for-sale/190283755/1979-hughes-500d

    Dude.... Thank you so much for some seriously enjoyable entertainment. When I was 22 I started my first job at a company that made visual systems for simulators. On my first day I was introduced to the "hardware lab" which had a raised floor and was quite loud from all the 12U computer racks. Way back in the corner was a 3 x 3 array of 19" monitors and in front of that rack was a raised platform with the top part of a disassembled office chair mounted on top. After I was invited to "take a seat" I noticed foot-pedals forward, a large bar on my left (the collective), and a cyclic control basically in my lap. It was then explained to me that I was going to basically have to "learn to fly rotary wing" in order to test my work (I was hired to build what you saw out the window, so-to-speak) To make a long story even longer :)... After over a week of non-stop crash-and-burns I finally figured it out and I've loved it ever since!! I've always dreamed of flying my own bird. I've ridden in lots and the MD500 or 550s have always been my favorite (ever since Magnum PI, actually!). Thanks again for kindling some very fond memories!
    Best Wishes.

    Many years ago in the '80s I used have the privilege of zipping around in these machines in Papua New Guinea visiting remote river monitoring stations, in the Owen Stanley ranges, with amazing pilots, mostly from NZ. The short 5 blade rotor was fantastic for slipping into really tight landing spots deep in jungle river valleys with the blades sometimes thwacking against light branches. Pilots would often have to reverse out of the rough-cut river bank landing pads, tail boom first, before they could turn the machine out over the river and ascend. Exciting times. The smell of Jet A1 still gives me a thrill to this day!

    I stumbled across this video by chance and now I finally know the story of this beautiful bird that I've seen fly over my house a handful of times! I haven't flown out of GTU in years but recognized the landscape immediately. That field is literally right down the road from me; what a beautiful back drop it made for this video along the North Fork of the San Gabriel out of Lake Georgetown. I found Magnum PI re-runs when I was in high school and later worked on helicopters in the Marines; I have always loved that beautiful Magnum helicopter ever since!

    The Hughes 500 is the absolute best little bird I’ve ever been in. Did lots of long lining, lifts way more than a 206 jet ranger. Incredibly manoeuvrable, watched our pilot (who was himself a musterer) whip around carabou better than any cowboy on a horse. From twenty feet off the ground. Absolutely hands down my favourite.

(The Chicago Board Options Exchange) I worked with a guy who was one of the most successful guys in the biz and uber wealthy. I sweat, he cut his hair in his condo (one floor beneath Oprah when she still lived in Chicago) with a dang FlowBee. Your SurfShark reminded me of him when you showed the FlowBee. I fly a 500 fairly regularly with my buddy who has a few of them. Best whirly bird in history IMHO. Cheers bro

Stayed with the fixed-wing ticket. 😢. But I did see an awesome Airshow performance at HHR in ‘87 with a guy in a fully painted Army OH-6. Looked like right out of “ Apocalypse Now” The bird had the lettering “Low Level Hell” on the side. Wished video was more readily attainable back then as it is now. That was a crowd pleaser that day!

    Nice! The basic Hughes / MD500 is one of four rotary wing aircraft I've flown in. The sound, man! She's quite agile. Glad you had the experience.
    The police bird was upgraded with the NOTAR version, much quieter. Sure would like to experience that!
    In the Fire Service, I spent plenty of time in the Huey / 205 and the Super Huey. Twin blade birds feel so different, love the chop chop sound of the Huey when in the power band and turns.
    Years ago I flew in a Jet Ranger with my sister in Tennessee, skirting the canyons. Chartered the helicopter for the afternoon...but agreed with the pilot we didn't want a tour. That's just work. I told him, I'm buying the fuel, let's just have some fun. Best time ever.
    Oh, the fourth? With friends at Camp Pendleton, my crew got to check out the Chinook. Wow! The noise! That rear bay is the coolest thing ever. Semper Fi.

This was back in the 80s, so I don't know if they still offer helicopter service there anymore. It was quite a big helicopter that, if I remember correctly, had been formerly used by one of the armed forces. I've only flown in a Bell 47, Jet Rangers and Long Rangers, with my former employer, and that has been decades ago. The 500 looks like fun, thanks for taking us along.

    The Sportscar of Helicorpers is the BO105 , but this thing is not very far away. For Shure! And it looks fantastic!

    Oooohhhhh yyaaaa....i love the Hughes 396c and the 500d. That look of the chopper is awsome with the 396c being the original OH-6 Loach used in Vietnam especially combined with the AH-1 Cobra as a hunter killer team. Now that i am retired from the Marine Corps i am going to buy one, just a matter of time.

    Micah, Micah, Micah... For over 33 years now, this has been my all time ultimate favorite model series in the world, and now seeing that this is yours as well is just too cool! THanks for letting me virtually relive my own experiences in this Ferrari of helicopters. :D I have flown in both "C" and :a "D" model like this one. I have yet to fly one though myself. "Things are looking fine, I gotta' wear shades." :E ^^

    Oh Yeah, the Hughes 500 my dream Helicopter as well. Sadly I've never flown in any helicopter. Being a private pilot (although haven't flown in years) never had the opportunity to fly in helicopter. Thanks for the "ride along" today.

    Duuuuuude, SUPER jealous. I flew on Magnum Helicopters, based out in Honolulu and rose back seat in that baby, and FELL IN LOVE! Of course I have the opportunity to crewchief on board Huey’s with the Sky Soldiers all the time so it’s always a pleasure to fly onboard choppers, but there’s something about the Loach I just can’t describe 😁

    in Vietnam, that helicopter in the video, would be called a Loach. They used the loach to draw fire, by flying at tree top level... followed by a Cobra gunship to take out where the fire was coming from...
    cool bird, Magnum 500.
    keep 😃.

    Closest I think I'm ever going to get to that is a 500 in flight sim. And based on your video, I don't think the sim begins to do it justice LOL. Congrats on living your dream though. It looks like a blast.

    Such a sweet ride that! I’d love to fly a Bolkow 105 as it was the first heli I fell in love with.

    You are certainly deprived if your dream helicopter is the Hughes 500. Thats just one up from the lethal Robinson. I got to fly the Augusta 139 which is the mainstay of air ambulance and search and rescue services worldwide. Its basically crash proof and you have to be in a fixed wing aircraft to get a patient to hospital faster. here in Australia its called the flying footpath, its so stable.

    The 500 has always been my favorite. Micah, I totally agree with you on the sound of them. They sound awesome. I used to drive my ex-wife up the wall by telling her what type of helicopter was approaching by just the sound of its engine. LOL!
